    Well, yeah, you have a point. And the Baneblade turret looks really good on it. To be honest, I was surprised how good it looked even without the storage bin on. That being said, the Rogal Dorn is supposed to be a VERY different vehicle - to the point that the design philosophy is changed almost from the ground up. This is also what happened to British tanks in WW2, with the progression from the Cromwell to the Comet to the Centurion, where the evolution from one to the next is pretty clear, but the Centurion looks pretty much nothing like the Cromwell.
    Let's have a bit of a look between the Leman Russ and the Rogal Dorn:
    1. The turrets differ by quite a lot.
    2. The engine deck is night and day, especially vents and overall size.
    3. Frontal armor layout is now more about armor and not just a sponson next to a driver's hatch.
    4. Track geometry is vastly different.
    5. Suspension design is vastly different.
    Now, here's the funny part. Leman Russ has always been a WW1 british tank with a mildly modern turret. You know what the Leman Russ is? It's an M26 Pershing with 40k design elements. Turret shape is pretty much the same as the Pershing, hull, track and suspension also look very similar. Personally, I like the idea, but that's just me. I'm glad you found a way to make it work for you!

    • @maddokminis

      Yes I think it simply is about the looks and cohesion for me - the Dorn simply doesn’t have it 🙂 Its compounded by the fact that I dislike the look of the Pershing and Patton which were obviously inspirational in the Dorn’s design. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for watching 👍

    In fact, if you are making a whole army, you can try gluing the turret from plastic sheets.
    Basically, you can take the Baneblade's turret as a basis and reduce each side by a couple of millimetres. This will work if you are confused by the size of the Baneblade turret.

    • @maddokminis
      @maddokminis  2 месяца назад

    I would add a piece of bolted on armor on the small area of side armor near the front below the turret. Also some bolted on armor on the glacis. It looks a bit too smoth as it is compared to the turret now.
    Small turret looks better imho, turret storage bin gives it a much more modern vibe which doesnt exactly fit the aesthethic.

    Honestly the turret size doesn’t really bother me that much, it’s really how wide the barrel is; but I guess that’s what you get when you paste a superheavy’s turret onto a smaller tank. Speaking of, that’s also the problem on the Leman Russ; the regular variant’s barrel is much too thick, and using a battle cannon from the Dorn is a very nice replacement.

      There definitely seems to be a conscious more towards more realistic weapon sizes in Warhammer 40000. I'd like to see a middle ground, perhaps made from plasticard just a bit bigger than the Leman's, a bit smaller than the Baneblade. Just big enough so the sides don't hang over and create a huge "shot trap". I'd also be curious to see a "cast" turret on the Leman or the Baneblade too.

    • @maddokminis
      @maddokminis  2 месяца назад +1

      Agreed. I think that a size reduction of about 15% would suit me just fine 🙂 as for shot traps - so many 40k vehicles have such terrible design flaws that I’m quite happy now to dispense with realism for Warhammer and just enjoy the rule of cool 😄 thanks for watching 👍

    Looks great with the Baneblade turret, only thing I'd change is to get rid of a few of those rivets, help it fit in with the chassis a bit more. From my (very) limited WW2 tank knowledge, some turrets were cast so wouldnt need riveting, I'd maybe keep the ones on the cuppolas and front armour sections and take the rest off. All personal preference of course, nice vid and your tanks look great! :)

    Interesting idea. It’s a little too big for me, maybe a 3D printed version scaled to 80% would be perfect, or using the Rogal Dorn’s barrel instead would bring it to scale. I agree that the RD turret strangely doesn’t fit the aesthetic, maybe the design team was a bit too keen on pushing Guard to WW2 era (including the redesigned soldiers) and leaving the sloped riveted design for HH. I recently built a baneblade and didn’t realise what that machine gun piece was for until you took the back part off the turret off!

    • @maddokminis
      @maddokminis  2 месяца назад +1

      That’s very fair. I think for me a reduction of about 10- 15% would work nicely 🙂 I like the idea of using real life armies and nations for inspiration in 40k (which is why I love praetorians) but the ww2 style Cadians are a bit dull to me TBH. As for the machine gun port at the rear of the turret - I can totally understand how that can get missed! It’s not at all obvious! 🙂 thanks for taking the time to watch mate 👍

    Does the Baneblade turret fit in more with the style of Guard tanks? Yes it does. But does it go with the dedign of the Rogal? I think not so much. The Rogal has more rounded hull plating, rather than the more sharp angles of the Russ and Chimera.

    My thing when it comes to "realism" in 40K, is not "What is realistic", but what feels right given what's stated in the lore.
    For example, the Leman Russ is supposed to have a 120mm Smoothbore cannon, which isn't what we have for a model. That looks more like a KV-2 main gun in comparison. Using the RDs Battle Cannons in the 'hole' for the Russ feels much better given the stated bore size.
    What's interesting is that ll of the other IG vehicles don't have this issue as the weapons feel like they're the right size for the hull's their mounted to. But that's me.

    • @maddokminis
      @maddokminis  2 месяца назад

      Personally I kinda like the ridiculousness of the gun sizes. I remember when the Russ was originally released in the early/mid 90s so there’s a lot of nostalgia involved for me. I have always enjoyed a good helping of goofiness with my 40k and sadly GW seems to have taken a much more serious direction away from the original satire these days. I still love the universe but I like to embrace the silliness! 😄 thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts 🙏

    • @Tank50us
      @Tank50us 2 месяца назад

      @@maddokminis Some of that goofiness kinda needed to go though. For example the proportions of the Space Marines. Their original models were no bigger than a Guardsman, and the way the Armor was designed meant that it looked like someone in the armor couldn't actually move. Cue the Primaris redesigns which fit the lore size even better, offer a terrifying new helmet design, _and_ look like someone can actually move in it.
      For me, if someone asked me to redesign the Russ... I'd keep the form for the most part. The turret would be wider to fit the crew it's supposed to have, and the hull would be longer to make it easier for the vehicle to cross a trench. I'd also use a different model of the battle cannon, and maybe keep the old one as a 'super' battle cannon or something.
      The main concern for me is always going to be "Can the humans that are supposed to operate it, actually fit in it". If not... then something needs to be adjusted XD I personally like it when the lore and the model match up though.

    • @maddokminis
      @maddokminis  2 месяца назад

      I agree with you entirely about the Primaris! 🙂 I truly see that as a scale correction against regular humans 👍 as for the Russ - I’m very happy with everything except the width of the tracks! That’s why I widen mine a bit ✊ all the other stuff, including the sponsons being stupidly small can stay! 😄 - I’ve seen a lengthened 3d printed Russ and really disliked it personally (I’m too conditioned to the original I guess🤷🏼‍♂️) thank you for the response mate, I always enjoy hearing other hobbyist’s thoughts 🙏

    • @Tank50us
      @Tank50us 2 месяца назад

      @@maddokminis admittedly, I'd love to see a LR upgrade set that allows the hobbyist to make different variations of the Russ. Not the variants mind you, but the different versions made by different forge worlds, or used by specific forces (like the Armageddon pattern or the Krieg pattern).
      Especially with the new HH kit that was released, GW would get a license to print money if they released such a set since the new kit can serve as _the_ new Leman Russ.
