  • This tutorial details how to install an Excell (VBA) Add-in using Excel 2013. It also includes a tangent about why I do NOT store Add-ins in Microsoft's default location

Hey - Love your videos and I'm learning a lot about VBA!
Could you perhaps do a video on creating a basic custom UI component for an Excel Add In?
    Thanks!

+George -- thanks so much for the kind words, I'm flattered!
I'd love to record a video on creating basic custom UI components for Excel Add-ins. Could you tell me a little more about what you're looking for?
For example, are you interested in your add-in having its own space on the Ribbon? Or are you perhaps looking for a tutorial on creating macros that have menus and pop-ups that are customized for the task at-hand?

      Hey Dan,
Thanks for getting back to me. I actually had a nosey around and worked it out for myself, using the custom UI editor. The original problem I had was creating an Excel Add-in that appeared on the Ribbon and could be used on any machine that was not local.
On a side note, is VBA part of your job?
I'm tinkering with excel automation and VBA in my current role, but was seeing if there's scope to move to a more full-time position doing it!

      +George -- another great question!
Yes, VBA is a huge part of my job. (From 9-5 I manage a team of Analysts for a digital marketing firm in Chicago. Before then, I worked as an Engineer for a massive engineering firm.)
There is ABSOLUTELY full-time work available for folks who can leverage VBA!
      What is your current role?

      Hey Dan,
I work at a school over here in the UK. My job title is "Data Analyst" but I use this in the loosest sense of the term. My role includes a fair amount of admininstration work, e.g. printing off and organising reports for the Students.
However the other side of my role has me analysing the School data such as grades, attendance and behaviour. I've developed a few nifty dashboards to help with this analysis for the Senior Leadership.
Looking forward I'd like to take the skills I've learnt in Excel / VBA and apply it to a business, where perhaps these skills are valued more and I'd be paid better!
Keep up the videos, very informative!
Thanks for taking the time to get back.

+George -- it sounds like you're doing amazing work!
Those Excel / VBA skills you are developing will pay MAJOR dividends. Every single job I've worked after finishing university prized ANY programming know-how, and VBA fits nicely because Excel is so ubiquitous. (Not to mention that learning VBA makes learning other programming languages and techniques much easier.)
Finance, marketing and engineering firms are constantly looking for types like you!
