YES! So many reactions here are that this is a sweet expression of commitment and love, but NO OMG like so many of his songs about relationships, it’s really illustrating one of the ways people will fuck it up without their partner ever doing anything disloyal or harmful. This protagonist has an idealized view of self sacrifice and heroism that require him to possess and control her to increasing degrees as she becomes more distressed at her loss of freedom. As she pulls harder he would think that she’s being stupid and she doesn’t understand that the only one who truly cares is him. He believes he is entitled to her heart and soul. But it only has one result, 100% he will end up alone and tormented by rage and hurt. His partner has finally managed to escape, or she has been destroyed by his rage at what he can only perceive as the most vicious betrayal. He will never let her fall apart, so how ironic and unjust is it that he is falling apart after he’d given her everything to keep her from ‘harm.” That s the story this tells me personally anyway
Also it could be a song to oneself. Both of these replies are legit and deep in a psychological sense. What if there are two people who want to be saved, yet one cannot fix/save itself. And tries to save the other without wanting to change them? Out of altruistic reasons. Say one knows they are dying, and nothing can be done. So instead does what they can to save a loved one/friend/lover etc?

I wouldn't necessarily call it romantic music, but definately sounds likes its explaining the eternal sadness that tears away at your heart slowly over the period of one's life from dramatic emotional problems & someone who also feels the same who doesn't want it to get to the other person. IMO. Love it nonetheless and come on guys, musicians are like poets they write music not always to be interpreted one way or another, lets have fun with our opinions.

Sad and beautiful song. I feel this way sometimes with my boyfriend, we both have depression and often swing wildly between we can fix ourselves and have a life together or we'll kill ourselves together so we don't have to die alone. It's difficult, but if I didn't have him I would already be dead and likely so would he. Being so close to someone who is exactly like you in many ways can be a blessing and a curse if you can't stand to live with yourself.
Yes i agree with you it's not the only time he's done an open ended sentence in All The Love In The World on the With Teeth album he states "sometimes i get so lonely i could..." and to me it feels like he meant to say Die and this song is about love but in a different way he is serenading himself in the way he feels with his rising derpession he is fighting himslef saying he won't let himself fall apart but his mind want's different it is a song about his inner struggle against the world.
Agreed! Who cares how anyone is really, we're all different! I've got an impenetrable exterior but we all have to vent it out one way or the other, what business is it to others if I do or do not unravel behind closed doors where no-one else be but myself? And furthermore, how is one to connect to music if they do not connect to it on an emotional level? I came here because Trent is Trent, and NIN fits a specific niche for myself!
I always wondered in this song, (i'm not trying to correct you or anything) but he says "If i could fix myself I'd.." he doesn't say the next word. Does anyone think he might have wanted to say "die"? I know the lyrics even in the CD's lyric book are open ended with "fix myself I'd.." I don't know, I just wondered if anyone thought the same, I just love this song, and always wanted to know if that could have been what he didn't say
Like I said, that's great. People can use this for whatever they want. I really don't mind. But I'm not going to type out my reasonings for feeling the way I did again. If you want a reason, read the post I just typed to Devin up there.
In that context it's not really a song one might present to a partner they aren't falling apart from, then, which was really the point I was getting at before. In other words, it's a very different type of "romantic". But then again, as I said, I really don't care either way how people choose to use the song.
Well, sure, but if the actual artist explains the fact that a piece of art is meant to be interpreted as something completely different... Well, if I saw a painting and thought it was about love and someone came along and told me it was about hatred, I guess I'd have a hard time looking at it the way I used to. I guess that's the case here. But if other people can still see their interpretation, I suppose that's all good for them.
what are you talking about? Everybody has their ups and downs.Who wouldn't want someone who would take care of them through the bad times ? I don't find it miserable at all... I think this song is a perfect e xample for someone who loves his girlfriend and trully cares about her.
It's not a romantic song, but it's a love song, nonetheless. No valuable love, on any microcosmic or macrocosmic level is all flowers and happiness. If it was, it would hardly be worth it. People who love wax and wane, rise and fall, feel joy and pain. So, yes, look beyond the lyrics. It IS a valid love song.
(Continued) And meanwhile, I'll go look at the Mona Lisa and philosophize about how the painting represents misery and despair. Why would I think that? Come on, look at that forced smile on her face. Art is subjective, isn't it? Again I say, I don't care if people really want to use the song for that purpose. If you want to have this played at your wedding, bless you both. And in the meantime, I'm going to go suggest we play "Bodies" at my great grandmother's funeral.
Granted, I do see your point, but no-one know's anyone on here, and whether one was in such a state or not... what difference would it make to their loved one? I've always had to be the strong one, even when going on the operating table, not letting a sliver of weakness show for the frailty of others. Who's to say I'm not just as frail yet realize this emotional backwards hiding game we play? Thus I conclude let people be people regardless of emotional output, there is no right or wrong!
I just think he means that he would fix himself if he could. "If I could fix myself i'd (as in "I would"). But of course that is just my interpretation :)
The Fragile now makes me think of Death Stranding. I hope it isn’t because there is a character named Fragile. Also that time fall ages you quickly, thus making you… fragile.
(continued) Unfortunately, there's no edit button. Really, I'm at least a novice-level musician myself. I know how subjective music is. But whenever I played a song in concert band and was told the meaning behind it, I just felt genuinely strange attributing my own (let alone opposite) meaning to it after that. I guess if other people can do that easier than I can, then that's great for them. Really, I don't want to judge other people's choices. I just find it odd sometimes.
I have to laugh at the people who think music is definitive, welcome to art, the name of the game is perception, but it's best described as subjective. I won't define subjective for you, if you don't already know what it means than you have no business telling people what any piece or work "means" Anybody listening to this song or another by any artist anywhere, you take it for what it means to you, that is what music is intended to do, be what it feels. There are no fact or intentions.
It's the font from The Slip. I don't know if the font itself has a different name because I don't have it anymore. Just look up "nin the slip font" or something.
Okay, the song itself might not be romantic, but that doesn´t mean you can´t see it as a romantic song. especially when it was your bf showed it to you and it´s like totally your story? it´s the point of view, that makes the difference.
You are a snob if you laugh at people that enjoy their music in their own way. Sure you can debate how it was intended, but it will mean something else to an individual. The beauty of art is that it can take on its own live.
Wow, I really did not think that so many people would get so bloody butthurt about my comment. If you hadn't read my other comments, I'll restate: When the artist says a song isn't intended in some way and people still take it in that way he clearly said wasn't a thing, it's odd. But hey, if you really want to use a song that, the words taken in context of a relationship, is at worst about a clingy and dependent couple, by all means fill your boots.
I have to laugh at all the people using this as a romantic song. I'm not exactly a music snob or anything, but you reeeally don't have to be to get the fact that this is really not intended to be a romantic song. Look beyond the lyrics. Listen to the discordant music. And while you're at it, listen to the concept album and understand this in the context of the rest of the story. Then go find a new romantic song. :P
I'm not intending to preach in any way. As I said in my last post, I don't care how people want to use the song. I just found it odd to choose this of all things considering the background. And sorry for assuming anyone was butthurt. But generally speaking, when you try to claim others don't know the definition of a widely used word (subjective, as per your previous post), it's usually meant in a demeaning manner. I suppose I could have worded my first post without "I have to laugh" but eh. (c)
Kind of...? The whole situation is complicated to be honest. To explain it in enough detail would require more than the five hundred characters they give me here.
music does not drag you deeper, in fact it brings something deep within out of you. it does not create things out of thin air, it only makes you aware of what's already there.

Again I say, I don't care if people really want to use the song for that purpose. If you want to have this played at your wedding, bless you both. And in the meantime, I'm going to go suggest we play "Bodies" at my great grandmother's funeral.
Because some peoples emotions work differently than your own?
I won't define subjective for you, if you don't already know what it means than you have no business telling people what any piece or work "means"
Anybody listening to this song or another by any artist anywhere, you take it for what it means to you, that is what music is intended to do, be what it feels. There are no fact or intentions.
Trent reznor. Genius
If only I could emulate...the idea...of....her. Lmfao jeeze life's funny I had oatmeal for supper...two kinds mixed cux why the hell not
It's the font from The Slip.
Everybody did that.
Stuff it, he isn't singing to you or any of your little girlfriends.
And let's be real, here... Having Bodies played at an elderly relative's funeral would be hilarious.
[skeletonwoman] this song is about everyone beautiful not those drowning in ego.
hey, but that makes sense too. It could be either way
She tries to get away ...
imagine what it's like to be the chick he's singing about? i know envy is a sin, but sometimes it's just hard. envy's a bitch.
This song will be my Wife and Myself's bridal waltz
First view, first comment. Bite me.
maybe romance is someone understanding what you need, you see, you feel, and maybe that isn't the carpenters, or Mariah Carey
I'm still pretty sure they met after this song was written though.
My mind instantly went to David Gilmore as well.
Kind of...?
The whole situation is complicated to be honest. To explain it in enough detail would require more than the five hundred characters they give me here.
i wan't let you fall apart!!!!!!
Won't
It's a solo of emotion not speed.
