I remember how hard this song hit in highschool, then right after graduation, I got an abusive bf and it took on a whole new feeling for me. And hearing it as a 31year old woman, I'm instantly transported back to 18. Such a complicated feeling.
I feel this.
In middle school, this was a solid angst anthem. I got into a really toxic relationship at 16 that was basically us mutually coping with the fallout from the same abuser; my ex stripped me of what little worth I had left and made me feel like I was nothing more than an object. We somehow lasted 6 years, and at 25, this song absolutely destroys me.

This song has always been important to me. Even to this day most men singing about women in abusive relationships talk about how much better they would treat her. I feel like so few songs actually address the abuser the way this one does. The anger. The way they shame him for how he treats her in the line “do you feel like a man when you push her around? Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?” And finally the catharsis of “Face down in the dirt, she says this doesn’t hurt. She says I finally had enough!” It gets me every time. Thank you so much for covering this. You’re both absolutely amazing!
It makes sense given that the singer was describing the relationship between his mother and father, hence the lack of romance to the song. Just sheer, utter righteous bitterness at the memory of the abuse and the promise of her eventually overcoming it
Yeah, the "I would treat her better" vibes of so many songs really annoys me. Like it's good to be condemning abuse, but the motivation shouldn't be your own gain. The number one concern should be helping the victim, even if attraction motivates you, don't let that be what openly drives you.
Bowling for Soup's "99 Biker Friends" is also a badass track with the same point as this one. Loved both of these bands back in the day, still do.
Violet singing reminds me a lot of the vocalist from Nightwish, one of my favourite vocalists of all time. Loved the vibe and sound.

God, I love this song... it always reminds me of my abusive father and how often he hurt me and my sisters. This song helped me hold it together till I was old enough to fight back. Its a weird mix after all these years, but I'm still left with such a seething will to fight back when I hear this. Its cathartic.
