I am VERY familiar with that song. I've known it for 40 years... In this translation/adaptation of the lyrics, it is written "homo"... Not quite right. Clearly, the story is about a homosexual. A man with taste and manners of which others would make fun of, etc. The expression at the time was "un homme aux ... ", that is precisely : "un homme aux hommes - a man attracted to men ; and the sensational Lara does pronounce it perfectly well, especially unequivocally at the end. ----- May I say that this piece, like so many written by Charles Aznavour, are incomparable Miniatures Theater Plays. No one like Aznavour could write a song, and sing it and make you believe he had experienced every moment he sings about. He is the only one I can think of who would write such Miniatures, and truly pull them off in concert. Those special songs are meant to be 'acted'. He didn't so much as miss a note when she leant on his arm then caressed his head & shoulders; which added yet another layer of visual imagery. I really think you ought to hear Charles Aznavour’s version. He was one of France’s greatest singers. He was a renaissance man, but also a 5’3”, Armenian immigrant during WWI who got very, very famous worldwide. He wrote 800 songs in his lifetime. Merci.

I noticed again as she says the word homo, her pronunciation makes it even more special and significant. In the last phrase in French she does not pronounce it as one word "homo". In the original french version from the 70's Aznavour was subtle about it by singing Je suis un Homme-Oh comme ils disent... the word for a man in French is "un homme". Lara is fantastic, she hypnotizes you and puts you into her world and you don't just feel the emotions, you live them one by one. She is not like any other artist that I have heard and seen, she is unique in everything, she can go from crying, to laughing, to anger, to sarcasm, to joy, to being a trasvesti or to being a little girl, she tells not only their stories, but the stories of thousands of people. I admire and love this woman, for me she is the best voice and interpreter of all time!! All of us at some point have felt hurt, disappointed, unloved, but as long as they don't steal our beautiful essence and we don't stop loving, that doesn't matter. I really think you ought to hear Charles Aznavour’s version. He was one of France’s greatest singers. He was a renaissance man, but also a 5’3”, Armenian immigrant during WWI who got very, very famous worldwide. He wrote 800 songs in his lifetime. Merci.

Now, after seeing this and your reaction, i have to say you really have the ability to dig deep and analyze the story and the performance while yourself are so moved and touched by the scenery. The French lyrics are just killers. Clean sentences, direct yet sober descriptions of surrounding and feelings, extreme selection of vocabulary for a massive message written and delivered in 1972 if I recall well enough) when this kind of topic and situation weren’t “positively and openly” parading around as they are today. Frankly it was daring and at the same time so fair, so just , such evidence that I ,like many others, wonder why we wait so long before things and mentality start changing . Thank you Aznavour .

Yeah you are right in your first assessment of what the song is about. Note that Aznavour the Author of the song made an English version which is pretty good as well. Charles Aznavour was extremely daring writing and’s singing that in if I recall the early to mid 70´s. Perception and judgement were different then and this is why he wrote it … sort of enough is enough of discrimination

I cried with you in front of this song by Charles Aznavour. I will come back to her diction of the last sentence which belongs to her alone: on the word "homo", she separates it into "hom-o", sacahnt that in French, man is said to be a "homme". I find it very powerful.

Im french and i've always prefered one sentence of the lyrics at 2 different ways : when she's singing " je suis homo", hearing that i could translate as "je suis homo" or "Je suis un homme ohhh... comme ils disent". Its like without reading the lyrics, people could interprate in 2 different ways.
I noticed again as she says the word homo, her pronunciation makes it even more special and significant. In the last phrase in French she does not pronounce it as one word "homo". She subly divides the word into "homme" (man) and then "o" with a slight inflection that sounds like "ou", which in French means or. To me it give so much more impact. Loosely translated. "I am a man or, as they say"

I am a native speaker of French, and regarding your question about the word “homo” being derogatory in French, I can say, having had also the opinion of other French speakers, that nowadays, it is not. It is simply the abbreviation of homosexual, which is a neutral term. That said, in 1972, when Charles Aznavour, who is the author of the song, released it, this term, “homo” might have been derogatory, as at the time being gay was not as well accepted as it is now. In the original french version from the 70's Aznavour was subtle about it by singing Je suis un Homme-Oh comme ils disent... the word for a man in French is "un homme". You don't pronounce the end "e" in the word, by adding the "oh" at the end he brought the subject subtle... clever writing actually
Aznavour's management told Aznavour he couldn't do this, and if he did, he had to put a disclaimer on the album cover saying basically "I'm not gay.." He saiid "No! We are all artists!," All of this broke barriers and changed attitudes everywhere. As you gathered, it's about a transvestite who has friends and a life, The title says it all, but this guy has this question: What makes a man a man."

It is a derogatory word. In a way. Homosexual said this way, "homo" is like saying a f*g. RUclips doesn't want me to use the word, understandable even if I use it to explain my thinking and not endorsing at all its meaning. It is a Charles Aznavour's song. Beautiful song indeed, rendered as always perfectly, Lara's way. I cry everytime listening to Aznavour's version. First time I heard it by Lara. Different and touching at the same time. I understand you for feeling the way you felt. I love Lara. Discovered her late in her career. I guess I was more in rock when I was younger. I really think she is the best female voice (even if like others like Diana Ankudinova, completely different though). Furthermore she is a complete performer. She is amazing. Regarding the song, "comme ils disent" was an eye-opening in the 70s when gays were openly ostracized and mocked. You should react to Aznavour. He died a few years ago at the age of 94 years old.
