    The fact that Unturned got to be on the list makes me legitimately happy. I remember the guy who made it back when he was making betas on unity, or even further back when he was competing for views on Roblox. Back when many of the mechanics were split between two games, Deadzone a zombie/pvp survival game, and Into the Frost a more hardcore crafting and survival game. He's come so far since then, and it's one of the most inspiring success stories for an indie dev that I've ever heard of.

    • @Mr.Sparks.173
      @Mr.Sparks.173 6 лет назад +49

      The AAA say they're dead, because they can't sink the millions of dollars into the title. 1.5 million players is not enough for them to turn a profit when they spend 200 million on a title.
      BUT for smaller teams, the indies, the sub AAA developers and the like, that 1.5 million is more than enough to keep the lights on.
      It's kinda like why a giant electronics company like Intel won't mass produce basic electronic components - the amount of money they'll receive isnt enough to justify the expense to thier shareholders. But smaller companies, ones without or few shareholders, have no such restriction.

    Really happy about Civ 5 still being popular. A non-gamer friend of mine decided start playing Civ and asked for my advice. He insisted on buying Civ 6 because it was "new" and had "better graphics", but I eventually convinced him to get Civ 5 because it had so much more content and was better balanced (in my opinion). The complete bundle went on sale last month for like, $10 and I frantically told him what a good deal that was, so he picked it up and is now playing it and having a great time!
    But now he really wants to have a multiplayer match with me because he wants to destroy me as Gandhi (my friend is Indian btw) :p

    • @drakshal403
      @drakshal403 6 лет назад +18

      in some ways yes and in others no, civ 5 has a much better combat system, no more stacking hundreds of units in one tile and bashing it out, it also has a better culture system, though at the sacrifice of a more in depth economy system, civ 5 also has its religion system, which is cool in multiplayer, overall i miss expansions like beyond the sword and such, along with the unique scenarios, though the smokey skies scenario more than makes up for it

    • @Carewolf
      @Carewolf 6 лет назад +5

      It is a matter of preference. The Civ4 battle system was not just stacking as their were also anti-stack weapons, and the AI was much better at using that combat rather than the silly cramped combat of Civ5.

      Trebax278 Agreed. You need to find that balance, and a net total of zero modern games do. TBH I also think you need to give the modern player more solid interaction than point and click, perhaps even fusing it together with certain walking sim mechanics, because point and click is quite literally the least engaging mechanic I can name. The two genres merged into one will most definitely do better fiscally than the sum of their parts.

      I would argue the changes with civ 5 were far more dramatic than between any of the previous civs. Moving to hex might be the biggest visual change, but single units per hex changed the game tremendously. Certainly it beats out the changes between civ 1 and civ 2 where the only really impactful changes were hit points/firepower and engineers.

The point is that they scratch slightly different itches, like Space Engineer allows me to build something in free space and than explore something with that, while 7Days brings you the horror of standing alone/in a small group against the world and your own hunger. You have only the safe space you create, not like dying light. And Rust is fun for a limited time

      Space Engineers is more sandbox than survival. Wolves and spiders are easily taken care of with a turret or two. My friends and I played both Ark and 7 Days to Die. Three reasons we branched off into Ark: (1) whenever 7 Days to Die received a massive update, it tended to break for 2-3 weeks, (2) 7DtD got boring during the long times between patches, & (3) because saves tended to be broken when new updates occurred, if we were close to an announced patch, we didn't feel like wasting time on something that would be lost in a month. So, we turned to other survival games. During one of those times, Ark had a sale.

    Hello, survival player here! You are close to the mark on these types of games. I have all the titles mention plus some on Steam. I am currently trying to master One Hour, One Life which is one of the most difficult survival games I have ever played! The big appeal, at least for me, is discovery of the world, recipe learning, and complex decision making. Of course, all games like this will run their course. Eventually I know all the recipes, have the world memorized, and my continued gameplay is not hinged on my choices simply because of my advancement in game. This also tends to draw me to games like Stardew Valley for the same resource collecting/crafting features, though it is frustrating that I can't truly died in that game from realistic things like starvation or dropping down holes.

    • @glitchygear9453
      @glitchygear9453 6 лет назад +25

      The problem with visual novels is that there are too many to go round, and most are terribly low quality. It's harder to Wade through the mess than it is for even other widely oversaturated genres, sending games like VA-11 Hall-A into permanent undeserved obscurity.

    • @genijable
      @genijable 6 лет назад +6

      Could you give me an example of a good representative of that genre. Even after googling it, I can not get a sense of that genre.

    • @glitchygear9453
      @glitchygear9453 6 лет назад +5

      Just A User Danganranpa, Doki Doki Literature Club (free! But very dark and the first two hours are misleading), VA-11 Hall-A, several really raunchy titles like Hunie Pop, Steins;Gate, but I'm not a big fan of the genre so that's all I got.

    • @glitchygear9453
      @glitchygear9453 6 лет назад +8

      Just A User Okay the best explanation would be to discuss the origins. For the longest time it was basically just a long string of dialogue you clicked through, with character portraits across a generic background. Hence the name - you were essentially reading a novel, which is why during the genre's outset there were constant accusations that visual novels aren't "real" games - there was no challenge or fail state.
      The first innovation was choices, like a choose your own adventure novel. Even today the appeal of many VNs (Visual Novels) is the many endings you can get. In many cases they're mostly or all "good endings" that don't reprimand the player for their choices, and it's literally all just personal choice when you end up.
      Not long after they got more interactive by way of a subgenre of visual novels that draws ire from moral arbiters and internet trolls to this day - the "dating sim" (not all of which are VNs, but which definitely originated there). The genre added a series of social mechanics to the genre as a whole, making them more "game-y" overall. This led to the very, very interactive modern visual novels like Danganranpa. Also good to note. Since the dating sim subgenre also came out of Japan, and since it was so easy to make anime styled character portraits even if you had a very Western style of writing, VNs suddenly got a second undeserved bad rep as "nothing but anime games", which of course is totally false but still persists due to how many of the worst visual novels over-use the worst of anime tropes.
      Then finally came Steam, which led to a lot of experimentation in a short time. Which leads to the diverse and unique genre of today.
      At its core a visual novel is a game where you cycle through dialogue with characters, usually represented by a character portrait juxtaposed across a static background image, with dialogue choices and social mechanics thrown in leading to some challenge and often differing endings. It's a genre looked down on even more than Walking Sims, but it has so much more potential.

    I'm a bit confused, are those numbers based on the number of players that have bought a steam game with achievements, or the number of player that obtained at least one achievement in a steam game ?
    Because that could make some difference, personnally I'm an absolute fan of Paradox games, and yet, I have no achievements in any of them, despite having sunk hundreds of hours in them, for the simple reason that I never play ironman and have a tendency to use a lot of mods. I don't think on the grand scale it'll make an enormous difference, but still.

    • @konradvonmaisfeld6428
      @konradvonmaisfeld6428 6 лет назад

      So to explain how these numbers were found out, do you know the global achievement stats screen (library > view all achievements > view global achievement stats)? It shows for each achievement the percentage of how many players that played the game got it. These percentages are rounded to 1 decimal place here, but a couple weeks ago, someone found a way to get these numbers before they got rounded down (with like, 16 decimal places or something) (this has since been fixed). From there, you could accurately determine what the original player numbers were before they got turned into percentages, so 100% is obviously the number of all players who ever played the game, including you, even if you didn't get any achievements. Hope that clears it up, the video did a bad job explaining this.

    Hang on... TF2, Unturned, Warframe, Paladins are all in the top 10. *_That's 4 Free-To-Play games._*
    Include Dota 2, which would undoubtedly on this list if it had achievements, and that's half the entire list.
    I mean, even if you don't count Dota 2, 4/10 is still a substantial amount, considering the variety of games on the market.
    ...Either way, you're wrong; there's at least 4, not 3, so I'm right, therefore I get to feel superior for correcting some random internet video, end of story.

    • @extrahistory
      @extrahistory 6 лет назад +1

      I didn't count TF2 as free because a _lot_ of those numbers come from before it was F2P. Originally that caveat was in the video but it just dragged down the pacing too much. Awesome catch though! I totally agree f2p is significant, it's just not 'dominant', which 3-4 years ago everyone was saying it was going to be.

    I have ETS2 and ATS (which is Euro Truck Simulator but in the USA, of course) in my Steam account, the numbers of hours I have on those games beats the my other 3 most played games by some margin. It's interesting to thing, a game about driving a truck, obeying the law, delivering a cargo, picking another cargo and driving to the next city, which sounds dull and boring but it can also be very relaxing. I'm not a truck enthusiastic, but its cool to drive on my commute and look at the trucks and say (wait a minute, I "drove" one just like that). When I bring up the fact that my most played game on Steam is about driving trucks, people seem to get wrong idea. But I can assure that is one of the most relaxing and enjoyable experiences I had playing video-games!

      I've never even heard of it, and I am on Steam all the time, I currently have a library of over 400 games, and I comb the store looking for new, interestingly-reviewed games during the sales... I think you are biased because probably your friends on Steam like many of the same games as you and so it seems like most people YOU play with or know have tried it. Clearly whatever this game is, it is something which Steam does not think I would like, so it never shows it to me in ads or the genre lists I tend to look at. For me, the game which "everybody has played" recently is Slay the Spire... however, maybe this game doesn't really register as popular to you from what you see, or maybe you haven't even heard of it? Fun thing to note: Left 4 Dead 2 was free for one Christmas a long time ago. Not free as in free weekend style, I mean Valve decided Left 4 Dead 2 would be their Christmas gift to the Steam community, and as long as you looked at the front page that day, sometime around Christmas of... 2013, I think? Then you could get the game for free, and keep it forever. I remember because that's how I got the game. I never bought it, but I still have it. Thanks, Valve. But point is, that probably helped its numbers.

      True Civ 6 didn’t really bring much that is worthwhile to the table. It also broke Civ’s trend of good DLC by having one of the worst reviewed DLC on steam.

    the survival game genre part is true in my end. No matter if it's free or cost a bit of cash, I would desperately try to play any type of survival game as the feeling of starting from scratch and making your way to the top in different ways (as the survival games try their best to be different from their competitors by gameplay or theme). I've played a lot of survival games (yes, including Minecraft) and it always give me a sense of satisfaction on how well I do and how fearful I become.
    Also, for that shot on Wallpaper Engine having Achievements, I can confirm that as they have a secret achievement called "K0n4m1"; an achievement where you type in the Konami code once Wallpaper Engine opens up. The achievement however would only give you extra themes and settings to the Engine's application window.

    Good thing that many people are like me and prefer a console version instead of dealing with steam.
    Not that i dislike steam but picking it up on the PS4 is just easier and my PC is too slow.

      Sorry but I am not sure what about “picking it up on the PS4” is easier.
      Steam has millions of games, which often go on sale for pretty cheap, as opposed to on console where they can offer some deals if you subscribe to their paid services.
      I honestly don’t see how it is a good thing people prefer consoles seeing that Steam is easy to use with lots of benefits.

      You can run into some serious trouble with drivers sometimes, Windows can be a pain. I like buying CE's. If your PC is 6+ years old some new games are impossible to play. Downloading can take forever if your internet is slow, same goes for PSN but on Steam you are pretty forced to buy digital.
      And my most important point. I can plug the PS4 in and out in seconds and move to another room.

      I have no idea how people can play on laptops, it felt wrong back when i had a laptop.
      I'll get a new beastly PC next year with Zen 2 and a next gen Nvidia graphics card and ofc a new monitor so i can use the power.

    I think the survival game grouping comes from the fact that most of the successful ones have been pretty good at cutting out their own niche that makes them unique enough to be worth playing.
    ARK is as much about becoming a dino beastmaster as surviving Rex and raptor attacks. Subnautica is all about that aquatic scenery, and This War of Mine is almost more base building simulator as it is a survival game.

    I think more people play the simulators than games considered popular like Undertale because you can just look up “Simulator” on Steam, and then you’d find a lot. It’s a broader category, therefore allowing more search results, and more people know about them than a specific game’s name.

    One thing you may neglect is how big early humble bundles were as well as early Steam flash sales. Civ VI has never really been in impulse buy zone when Civ V was a part of early humble bundles and I recall it was as low as $10 in flash sales. And since it was so early, many people would try instead of have their library stockpile. Also, Civ V was a major seller with over 8 million copies sold and Civ VI only sold 2 million by mid 2017. At best VI is at 4 million which is a huge disparity from Civ V

    I cannot speak for others, but when I sit down to enjoy a "sim" game, namely the calm ones like Eurotruck Simulator, I do so as a means to relax. There is just something so calming about the concept of being out on the open road, free from the little annoyances of life, but without having to go out and experience the annoyances of driving. It is a calming feeling that you rarely get with most AAA or even indie games out there. They all want to give you action, power-fulfillment, and/or a sense of adventure or danger. Sometimes, you just want some calming music and a big open road. It....kind of makes you feel like for just a moment, this is your moment. That you can actually just...drive a truck. No one to nag you. No one to shit all over you for political views or the way you look or whatever [insert random thing here]. You just have a thing to do. It is mindless and calming. That is what appeals to me about most sim games. It is the boringness of life, but presented in a way that is easy to deal with.

    You feel a lot more chill now than you were before, Matt. Happy to see you settling in. :)
    This is fascinating...if somewhat problematic. Paradoxically, data doesn't always represent facts, at least not when it only comes from one source.
    Still, it's neat to see Skyrim, in all its various permutations, at #11. I am sad about Stardew Valley, but that's just because when I like a game, I sort of glom onto it and become overly attached. I did the same thing with Last Dream (recommended to me by this very channel, thanks guys!) and its sequel, and I'd be surprised if those broke into five digits of players.
