I’ve had weight issues, namely binging and binging some more, since I was 15 and I’m 63. A few months ago I joined an online Overeaters Anonymous, 6 week session on the 12 steps, group.
It’s really nice that there are videos on RUclips as well. I don’t really know that I’m doing any better yet, but I think my head is in a better place.
      My problem is absolutely addiction.
You look FABULOUS Jessica! You, too, Brian!! Thinking about you from a hop, skip and a jump away in northern Illinois!🎉🎉🎉🎉

Thanks for the update! Brian, cut yourself a break. You are going through an incredibly difficult and stressful time right now. Not that you aren't, Jessica! But I know from my own experience it's easier for me to be the one that's sick than to have my loved one sick. It's much more stressful for me to be the healthy one! So take it easy on yourself, Brian. And kudos to you, Jessica, for sticking to a great diet! It's so helpful when your physicians are on board with a whole-food plant-based diet. Keep us up to date on how you're both doing. Record and drop recipe videos when you're up to it (and please don't feel pressured to do so before you feel ready). I'd love to see the new recipes, but I am not in such a big hurry that I want you to stress over it or get more ill. Take your time, take it easy, and know you've got a whole lot of folks out here who care about both of you and are ready and willing to do what we can to help (and I don't think I'm speaking out of turn when say most of the people seeing this video will agree with me).

I hear ya, Brian. When my husband was going through cancer treatments--and was hospitalized numerous times over a period of 2 years, sometimes for weeks at a time--I would go through the McDonald's drive thru on my way home from the hospital every night and ordered a double quarter pounder with cheese, large fries and a large shake. And what was the result of this, you might ask? Well, I gained almost 100 pounds! Sometimes, you just do what you need to do to get through these things--no shame--no guilt. I've since lost the weight--and happily, my hubby survived. You guys are both awesome! Your commitment to the WFPBD is truly inspiring!

When I was first diagnosed I was already eating WFPB and went down the “I must eat these super anticancer foods + Dr Greger’s daily dozen + Dr Fuhrman’s GBOMBS salad every day” road for a while before my own research finally led me to the same place you landed. Those are great challenges to play with but the real point is to just stick with WFPB eating and pay more attention to eating the rainbow. I’m also experimenting with intermittent fasting, playing around with ways to eat in an 8-10 hour window. I really appreciate this description of your current simplified approach to daily cooking and eating and look forward to that tomato sauce recipe. I have no evidence of disease now but more reason to make this way of eating increasingly easy and pleasurable for life.

Brian when you mentioned your insomnia and deep diving studies, it threw me back to my dad’s diagnosis of gallbladder cancer, super rare, not much known and not great outcomes I researched and read more studies late into the night and while his recovery going on 5years I attribute to him and his medical team, I do feel I gained valuable information and it helped calm my anxiety which in turn enabled me to show up for my dad and mom in a stronger more steadfast way. Food struggles are a demon on your shoulder that never goes away. When my beloved mommy was very I’ll with ovarian cancer I was in the hospital with her 11 hours every day, sometimes overnight. It’s next to impossible to eat well. I struggled to eat due to extreme worry and anxiety all day and if I got to the end of that day and things were stable then when I got to bed at night I would breathe a huge sigh of relief and eat my comfort foods. This was my coping mechanism and my comfort. I’d keep bags of food in my bedroom. Crisps chocolate cakes biscuits sweets etc. it became my medicine. At the moment I’m struggling with extremely stressful times and situations and it’s so hard without this copying mechanism to turn to 😢

His book has been very helpful to me who has recently discovered (in July) I have stage 3 triple negative breast cancer. Another great MD I have recently discovered is Dr. Kristi Funk. I'm 61 and vegan for the last 6 years. I have found that eating starches at my age either causes weight gain or stops weight loss. I do best avoiding starches. But, as Dr. McDougall has stated, the starches play a big role in satiety. When eating just fruits and vegetables, it takes some adjusting time for the body to start feeling satiated without starches. The starches in a vegan or WFPB diet are taking the place of the calorie dense meat. I watch another RUclipsr's channel called "Fruit n' Sport." He really eats the way that I want to eat as an older person. I think you really have to allow your body to go through a period of not being satiated and to adjust to less calorie-dense foods. Eventually that will happen. It happened for me once before. But then I went back to eating the starches. I once became friends with a thrift store owner who was about 5' 9" and very slim. She was an older lady also. I was shocked when she told me she used to be overweight, over 300 pounds. She said she started eating once a day a large salad and a big bowl of fruit around lunchtime. She dropped so much weight that she decided to just continue that lifestyle. So I believe that the main way over time to control weight as vegan/WFPB is to allow the body to adjust to not consuming a lot of starches. I think men may struggle a little more in this regard since they require more calories than women. But it is still doable. It is possible to feel satiated just with vegetables and fruits, but the body needs time to adjust. The body won't make that adjustment if constantly fed calorie-dense foods like meat or starches. Starches will work for some people only if they are doing a lot of sports or exercise such as biking miles or jogging every day. But the average person will probably struggle with their weight when consuming a lot of starches

Hi from Tasmania. You guys are tops!
I love my WFPB I don't have to strain my brain. Eat nothing processed or anything that has additives. It's the healthy feeling one has as well. Weight loss is the plus but not the focus.
Success for me equals who you are as a person and you guys are Success! :)
Sadly our society is so visually focussed.
Eg. A person could look fabulous ( whatever that means) but be so sick I and the reverse occurs.
Of course you guys are under stress.
    Stress is life..if you're human.
At least you can make better fast food choices. Lovelies be kind to yourselves.
    Dopamine fixes are soooo understandable.
We love you and are praying for you.
If anxious viewers post negative or critical comments ....try to ignore them...try to not let them determine any reactions.
    You guys are already winners!
    God bless

I relate to all you talked about. It hasn't been a straight and narrow path for me, since the early 80s when I first got into this way of life. Fortunately for me, I am maintaining an 80 lb weight loss, and have overcome a lot of health problems. All this to say that most of us addictive type eaters learn as we go, and do better for ourselves as our live for that good feeling is more important than the immediate gratification we get from indulging in that old behavior. Jessica, you are beautiful. Thank you for staying so real throughout all this treatment, and Brian you are wonderful. Doing your best for yourself is hard when you're a caretaker. Hope you're getting that help you talked about. Chins up.

Brian is correct, "diet" just means what you eat. It does not have to mean a "weight-loss" diet. Also, when I am explaining to others why I follow a plant-based diet, I encourage them to watch Dr. Milton Mills videos on RUclips.. He explains why a plant-based diet is what humans are supposed to eat and he does it very well, based on science and evolution.

Hey Jessica you look so much more relaxed in this video and you skin looks so radiant. Brian, love that you research things so throughly and are getting back on track with how your eating and where it’s from. You cook so well, so obviously you’re gonna want to eat it. I love how you riff off each other in conversation and are so supportive of each other too. Take care guys. ❤ Btw I know you’ll probably have already checked out the relationship between body acidity and cancer occurring proteins but if not this may want to. Alkaline foods and high micro biome foods for gut health were shown in tests highlighted by The Christie (which is the largest cancer centre in Europe based in the UK that treats 60 thousand patients a year) to be the most beneficial foods to eat. They also recommended making drinks such as plant based smoothies using Alkaline deionised water too.

Loved this. Good to hear your reasons for eating WFPB. I became a Vegetarian 30 years ago (for ethical reasons) and then finally became a Vegan in 2021 ( health scare). I want to eat “cleaner” by eating WFPB but am lazy in the kitchen. I’m trying to change that.

The thing is, you can make this as simple as you want. I am a 'recipe chaser,' with so many recipes I've saved and never made. When things are hyperpalatable -- even if they are plant foods -- we can be tempted to overeat. This week, I am starting an experiment of purposely eating very basic foods: mostly potatoes, non-starchy veggies, and a piece of fruit or two each day if I want it. (Oil free condiments and spices are fine.) Monotonous and boring. Some people in my FB plant-based group are having great results doing a "potato re-set," so they have inspired me. I want to try to treat food more as fuel and not as fun. So what if you're lazy in the kitchen? It's not a moral fault. You can still eat very healthily even if you aren't making meals with complicated recipes.

It’s good to see you doing so well. I have a full I prep my food right after I’m filled up from breakfast. For example, after I eat breakfast I will refill the salad box, about the size of a shoebox, I will steam some potatoes or rice and I will chop one rectangular Pyrex size container of vegetables. That way, if I go out and run errands, and come back hungry, it’s all rowdy. I throw rice together with steamed veg. Around 3:00 I will stupa cob of corn in a kitchen towel with a few splashes of water on the towel, microwave corn in towel for 2:20 minutes. I usually like the potato later, maybe with dinner. I was never good at doing a weeks worth of food prep, but I find if I can prep just a few things right after breakfast that’s good enough to keep me on track.

Thanks for sharing your journey. Food addiction doesn’t go away just because you change what you eat. I can say that after 64 years of trying everything else, the plant based diet works better than anything I’ve done. I know it’s a mindset, but for me, I really don’t want to make food taste any better than it was intended to right out of the ground cause then I eat too much of it. I love the taste of the vegetables and beans and have enough trouble eating proper amounts of them. I love avacado and nuts but really have to limit or eliminate both too lose more. Everyone has to find their own way but just making it simple works best for me.

This happens and you just never know so thought I would mention it. It’s alkaline water and cancer can’t grow in that environment. I think things like this work well for stomach and much quicker but good for all.
