Thanks to its powerful suspension springs, it does well. It takes thick winter blankets, comforter covers, and bath robes to put our machine off balance. And since we extremely rarely wash those 3, it does amazing every time.

Try all that with hanging suspension! FORGET IT!!

Amazing! it was able to spin without even going off-balance for a second and yet new washers that you’ve tested can’t handle that at all. They try to save themselves by refilling and still can’t manage. It sure says something for the quality of vintage machines.

petermazbabie nothing beats the old suspension held by metal and springs now all you see is 4 thin rods...manufacturers are really setting us up for failure

One time our 1990 direct drive was unbalanced to where the tub was smacking the cabinet, and the tub wasn't even at full speed. I can only imagine how hot the spin clutch got. But even after all that, and I balanced it, it just ran like it was nothing!

Kirk, that's insane. I'm really surprised that the machine handled that big phone book. Certainly didn't help the machine. Next stop...scrap heap?????

Nice Video Kirk, I think Maytag used stronger suspension springs in their washers... Because when I had my Kenmore washer that was built exactly like this, Most of the time my machine would go off balance every time I did a load of jeans so I use to stay there and wait in anticipation for the beating of the drums to begin LOL!!! Have a Great Day Kirk...

I'm almost certain that you didn't hurt the machine filing this video. Everything on it was built well and designed to take a little beating. Now if it was a modern machine, oh boy you'd be cleaning up plastic pieces all over your shop for weeks to come to LOL! It'll be interesting to see how it handles the blanket test with its weak motor.

It handled it pretty nice for those types of books considering today’s machines with hanging the tub with thin rods

Kirk, thanks for the video bud. I am impressed. This is not like a speed queen, but this maytag did really well. 👍

Don't get me wrong I live my speedqueen it's great but is still miss my direct drive.

@@Sharkie626 I'dk me and my family where the original owners of that machine. For years it served 4 family house that grew to five then 6 it survived a 10 year old 14 year old and 2 babies then in 2012 was passed on to me when I got my own placed when parents got new machines the dryer gave up it was a gas dryer anyway so to keep me from buying a washer and dryer they gave me the washer someone else took the dryer since it was gas don't know if they ever fixed it.
I have electric at my house so I cant use a gas dryer.
I know do laundry for 4 people plays all the needing and sofa blankets and floor mats I like a clean fresh smelling house.
Ever since that washer was new it did anywhere from 10- 20 loads a week.
It was a 2000 model I believe so after about 12 years it finally gave up suprissingly that was really the only time it went done. Before it gave up it did need a timer a few years prior it would skip the first spin so it would never rins the clothes you would have to let it soin then move back to rinse but it didn't keep the machin fron operating. Its scary the motor coupling never broke until its final years the dependable maytag truly was dependable until the end.

I still have the same appliances though same washer and dryer I got the speedqueen last year so far not one problem except when I moved we broke the drain line on the washer so I had to buy a new one no big deal it got crushed against the stairs when we carried up. Yes I have a house that sit on stilts qith the garage below and the laundry room us upstairs it wasn't found carrine that speed queen up the stairs next time I move I'm hiring people to move it for me.
