  • A short video showing the full moon as captured using a ZWO ASI 224MC camera, attached at prime focus of a StellaLyra GSO 10" Dobsonian telescope. The video was captured using the Firecapture tool. I discovered that the focuser on the scope will not allow a DSLR to reach focus, so I used the ZWO instead.

    This brought out a much under appreciated aspect of astronomy in my opinion. Whenever I'm at the eyepiece I very seldom notice any sound just a very calming silence. It's only when I look away that I notice the background sounds. You managed to capture that , hats off to you😁

      Thanks Ian, I thought about adding some background music but decided to go with nothing, just the moon gliding by.

    Enjoyable! Can just make out the distant sound of Credence playing in the background of my mind. Cheers & Obligements from FW Texas.

    I've hit the button on the same scope Graham. Had to weigh up size versus practicality. Tried contacting you through messenger but it wouldn't let me. Bought of flo also. I'm about the same build and age of you. Clear skies Vic

    Interesting to see how this is working out Graham - great capture here. I have the 8” version and looking forward to trying some untracked planetary photography using the ZWOASI224. I imagine you’d be able to stack and work with your footage here to achieve some detailed lunar images? I see an equatorial tacking platform is now available for these Dobsonians - interesting possibilities ahead potentially!

      Hi Andrew, yes I should be able to stack some of the frames. I look forward to reading a review of the platform - as you say it seems promising!

    Fascinating video.
    Never expected to see such detail as that when moon is full.
    Thank you for sharing.

    From the time you owned Stella, how is she overall?
    I wanna buy her but in a dilemma as I also saw a bresser 10" at an odd 479 quid way below the usual rrp (bristolcameras) as its 570+ in flo.

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  2 года назад +1

      It’s pretty solid kit as not actually new - it’s a Zhumell Z10 and Apertura scope in other guises. I did look at the Bresser though as I liked the size of the altitude “wheels”, but stocks were weeks away at the time. The SL balance isn’t perfect despite the sliding pivot capability. That’s my only gripe that maybe the Bresser would better. Optically and mechanically the SL is otherwise very well put together with a standard RACI finder which is worth having. Just my 2p. Graham

    Are moon filter a must on a 10" dob or u dont need it ? dont want eye to get damged..

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  Год назад

      I'm not a medical person but my opinion is that it won't damage your eye (unlike the sun of course which is a real danger) but it may just be uncomfortably bright. I don't tend to use a filter but they are cheap and readily available if you find they suit you best. So it's a personal choice.

      I’ve also bought one of these, they are made by Guan Sheng Optical in Taiwan and are sold as GSO or BinTel brands here in Australia (identical to yours except white paint on tube). I agree, excellent optical performance for the price, and the hardware is all good enough that nothing needs to be replaced, unlike some other popular brands.

    • @timchurches9332

      What is the equatorial platform mentioned in the comments here? Is it a Guan Sheng product or a third party platform? There are no commercial EQ platforms available here in Australia, so it means DIY or import one from the US or Europe at vast shipping cost.

    Hi. I am new to this hobby. And your chanel has encouraged me a lot about stargazing to the point that I am considering buying my First telescope for myself and my 2 sons aged 8 and 6. Where I live in Dhaka, Bangladesh telescopes are hard to come by and pretty expensive because of shipping and duty. Most of them are high/intermediate ones and very pricy or toys. Very rarely we come across good beginner telescopes. After much searching I found 2. If you or anyone here could give me advice it'll super helpful. My 2 options are Celestron Starsense 114LT and another is 70×700 mm refractor. I gather from my limited knowledge is the 114LT is better but here it is about $120 more than the 70×700mm Refractor which is coming in about $220 as it is. I'm not sure if 114LT at $340 will be worth for me as a beginner or not. Or is it better to go for the simpler $220 70×700mm refractor. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

    • @JenhamsAstro
      @JenhamsAstro  2 года назад

      Hello, the Starsense part is really a bracket to hold a phone, and an app that let's you point the scope and find objects. That is worth having. Is it worth the price difference? Maybe. Optically a 114 reflector will perform about the same as a 70mm refractor, where the refractor is more intuitive to use and more robust to bumps. There is a Starsense LT 70 AZ model that would be a good option in my opinion, as it brings together the ease of finding things (never underestimate this with a small scope!) and a simple optical tube. If you want a reflector I would suggest saving up to get a 127/130mm model as the larger mirrors will give a brighter image.
