Took forever, but I hope everyone enjoys the video! Thanks for your patience while I worked on getting this one done, excuse me while I pass out for several days.
Played both ff7 and 8 all the way through during the quarantine in 2020. It was so immersive, i felt like being a kid again, having all the time in the world.
FF7 is probably my favorite rpg ever because it's whole message is about life. You'll lose and miss other people, the future seems scary and we're all pretending to be someone we're not but by the end of the world we're with the ones we love.
I can not ever forget this game. It was not my first dip into RPGs that was Shining Force and Phantasy Star iv for the Sega Genesis. But after playing those my apatite for RPGs rose, I didn't find out till much later in life that I really picked some winners for my first RPG games, or rather my oldest brother did. He thought I might like the games and got them. Until then I had played a lot of contra, super mario, superspike volleyball on the NES, and we actually had a Turbo Grafx 16 which I liked to play Legendary Axe, Veigues, and Keith Courage, which housed some of my favorite games which I've not played any of for years, I have no idea what happened to that system or the games from our childhood house. My brothers and I would play Mortal Kombat 1 and Eternal Champions for hours and hours on the Sega Genesis. I got bit by the video game bug harder than my brothers though, and in 1997 this game dropped and had some commercials and cool ads around. I wanted it, and I asked for it constantly (and a playstation too). That year for Christmas Santa got me a new Playstation and FF7 together. I played the ever living crap out of this game and I loved it, the sound the graphics, the characters, the plot everything I was smitten. I remember making a fort in my room and having a blanket over it with just he playstation and old TV in there glowing with black all around and 100% focus on the game. Truly some of the best memories from my childhood. This game was the greatest game I had ever played and would continue to be forever. Aeris's death, Sephiroth's madness in Nibelheim, and Cloud's true memories in the Lifestream were my favorite parts of the plot and moved me emotionally. I felt so connected to Cloud and the story. I only imagined games to get better and better, only like many of us found out those were the golden years, late 90s early 2000s. Life has never been that joyous and the future never looked as bright as it did back then. Movies were iconic and for the most part fresh and creative. Now here I sit in the late 2020s with remake after remake, garbage game after garbage game, politics taking center stage which we never gave a crap about before. Ideological nutcases actually gaining traction and influencing masses of people. I feel like the world has lost it's mind and sanity may never return. I will forever now cherish those past glories. Oh yeah and don't forget Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, that game still sits at number 2 on my all time favorites.
Had a PS1 that was bugged so I couldn't use the 2nd player port or use either memory card slot. Had FF7 so I left the console on for about 7 days until a storm came and knocked out the power. Got all the way to the underwater reactor.
My first game I ever seriously played. Got a ps1 when they released in nz and it came with ff7 for 2 yrs I played on a black and white TV until I finally got a color one in my room I was 8.
Honestly, would like to see you cover the other entries (even Advent Children, despite it being a movie). I'm honestly fascinated by how Cloud is basically depicted in media and then you play this game, and it's like the man has layers to him, that even I'd believe his facade is still him trying to play up what he thinks is his idea of cool, so even when the Remakes show him as stoic, I still feel like it's not exactly betraying him - at leasy up to that point. Other media just seems to lack that context or assumes you played 7 beforehand, so you do feel like his cool persona is just a mask. Btw, really liked this one. Hopefully in the future, we do get the comparisons between this and the remakes as well, though I feel like it's gonna be a Rebuild of Evangelion situation - where only certain things are similar but expanded upon slightly, if not changed. Also, Gongaga.
Great video man, I've seen many videos on the subject but your experience with it seems pretty cool. The editing is great and I love the length of the video too. Please continue the great work as I continue to consume your work. Also please make a Dirge of Cerberus video as I feel it would be great content.
I think one of the reasons they don't delve more into Gast being Aerith's father and how Sephiroth would have reacted to it is precisely the point: Sephiroth is a tragic villain because he acts under misassumptions because he doesn't have all the necessary info to know that Aerith was Gast's daughter and that Jenova was not really his (Sephiroth's) mother. Although I always took it that it was always Jenova who killed Aerith and who made throughout much of the game appearances in Sephiroth's form.
Yes, I know, sorry If I expressed myself unclearly: I meant The fact that Jenova is not Sephiroth's mother and that Gast is Aerith's father to Be different matters. I mean, Aerith is still Gast's daughter Even though he was her father. Sephiroth might have stayed his hand had he known.
Shoutouts to the Tseng scene at the temple. Something I only recently found out is if you leave the room and go back in instead of heading into the temple he no longer has dialogue and he no longer moves. Always wondered why they brought him back to life effectively for the sake of short stories and 4 seconds of movie screentime.
I was born in 92 so was pretty young when i played it, i played it for so mang hours though despite never finishing it. I restarted so many times too, for some reason. Still very nostalgic for me.
Our gaming experiences align almost 100%. FF1 was my first Final Fantasy via emulation, but the one i first really got into was FFV - also through emulation. X is also my favorite Final Fantasy game, but this one is a close second. If you haven't made a video on FFX, I would love to hear your thoughts on it in a format like this.
Only justification I've been able to come up with regarding Hojo is "ladies love the lab coat." Right place, right time is definitely a part of 7's lasting power, but it was also the first mainline game to get a release in Europe, as all we got over here before that was Mystic Quest and Adventure off the top of my head.
Man I somehow lived 20 years on the internet, without getting spoiled about her death, or maybe I saw it but I didn't really know who she was or the franchise at that time. Played the remake, liked it so much, and then played the OG just because I liked the characters so much... and then yeah that happened.
Great Video. I always appreciate your story analysis and this did not disappoint; your criticism of the ending is spot on and much the way I felt when I watched my friend beat it back in 1998. I thought Advent Children, despite its flaws, was a decent "ending", though I consider what happened in the end credits of Kingdom Hearts to be my head canon ending. I'm working my way through Remake and I'm fairly certain that SOMETHING is going on here, and what we're watching isn't necessarily the same story we played nearly 30 years ago.
Humanity wasn’t gone at the end of FF7. Been known for a very long time. You can hear kids laugh at the end. So the compilation didn’t undermine some theme or whatever.
Gonna need that crisis core review asap too, i played that game before the real ffvii and because of that i thought it was the ffvii everyone talked about. I was about ten at the time and man that games ending destroys me every time i see it. I only later found out it was a prequel and learned the story of ffvii, and was really disappointed that not as many people knew about zacks story and how tragic it really is.

Honestly I'd love to hear your thoughts on Final Fantasy VIII and X. Seeing your nuanced takes on GTA V I can see you finding something unique in FVIII especially.
FF7, Chrono Trigger and Skies of Arcadia were my favorite RPG's of all time Videos I'd love to see: FF7 Remakes FF7 Dirge of Cerberus FF7 Crisis Core Skies of Arcadia ☺️
Sephiroth, who believed himself to be an unstoppable chosen one, really got his ass handed to him by some random country bumpkin who unironically says mosey
There's a strong consensus that the Sephiroth seen all across FF7, even the last version of him, has never been Seihiroth. That he has been dead since the Nibelheim incident and has only ever been a perfect vessel for Jenova's will. At least until Remake and Rebirth where he seems to be taking back control for his own true desires.
That's interesting to hear, because I was always under the assumption that the consensus was Sephiroth being in control of Jenova. That his consiousness overpowered her's in the lifestream and was puppeteering her from the northern crater to do his bidding.
@@greghaggerty9996 I think that's the impression that a lot of people had in the early years, but Jenova having been the one in control all along really took off around the time the remakes started being made. One of the biggest indicators is before Sephiroth went insane, his japanese dialogue would use the personal descriptor "ore" which is a gruffer and very informal way of speaking about one's self. But once he went all cocoa puffs he started using the word "watashi" which is much more arrogant, grand, and ostentatious. But the Sephiroth seen at the end of Remake is back to using "ore". This really seems to indicate that Sephiroth is shaking off the control of Jenova and acting on his own will instead.
Finally finished watching the whole video. Have to say my second favorite ff7 vid... sorry, abridged gets the top spot 😂 however, i will certainly be relistening to this multiple times. PLEASE do ff8! That's my favorite one, contrary to most people's views on that game. Probably because that was my first final fantasy game.
I love how that mini game complaint for the original can be applied to rebirth 10 fold. Jesus Christ I'm ok with the amount of mini games but they were so forced on you (Costa del sol especially)
Im always puzzling thinking are FF universes connected or not (eg FF6 and FF7 both have end of world meteor type stuff)... those could be and dont have to be.
Never play 9? 7 is my fave but more for nostalgia reasons. 9 is good, for me the best in the series objectively, I just do not have a passion for it the way I did 7, 8 and 10 for some reason I think it is the character designs, super weird.

FFVII is definitely a "had to be there" experience in many ways. There was nothing else on that scale at the time.
I was there and it's just hard to explain the feelings this game gave me from the story to the music to the combat. Just magical in a way
That and chrono trigger. If you were there and experienced the y2k crisis...it hit different
Oooo I hope there will be a FFX retrospective too that’s the first one I’ve ever played

Couple of thoughts..
1. Love the addition of new style of video and new genre.
2. David sounds like a real one
3. You sound like SaltFactory 👁️👁️.
