CyberKnights : Flashpoint (a Cyberpunk setting Heist game ,currently in early access, with X-Com like gameplay made by the ones who created the 2D pixel games Startraders: Frontier a turnbased sandboxy space RPG and Templar Battleforce a tactical turnbased game where you hunt spacebugs with a group of Spacemarine esque Soldiers)

I keep seeing people say that on console there is some memory leak issue that causes loading times to get longer and longer the more you play. I've heard horror stories of people claiming they've ended up running into loading screens that take up to 3 hours. Don't know if these claims are true but I don't have a gaming PC so my only option is to go for the console version.
@@cobalt-snake6125 don't know how X-Com2 runs on current gen, but on PS4Pro with HDD instead of an optional SSD i don't remember having loading screens longer than a couple of minutes. The game does have quite the bad performance with inputlag and such issues though. X-Com Enemy Within (the Prequel from the PS3 Era) runs good though.

If You're more into short , more puzzle oriented matchesm Into the Breach tops out. If You're more interested in the strategic layer, Phoenix point or X-Com tops offers more If You're more into a more contained roguelite tactic experience, Othercide is better and so on. Troubleshooter kinda suffers from the featurecreep of a long running early access title just like warframe, where they added more complex layers to later additions without updating earlier ones. The K-Pop Hero Style does not go well with many X-Com fans and was one of the bigger critics about the chimera squad spin off. The bigger the misssions get, the more the gameplay starts to drag out with the player sometimes waying a minute just for their own next turn. Having to grind out some missions over and over again to get certain skills/items due to the ARPG like loot system can be quite annoying to some fans of the tactical game genre. The lengthy visual novel style storytelling is also not everyones cup. I love Troubleshooter and can't wait for the currently developed next installment, but i wouldn't call it clearly better than any of the games on this list as each has its own merrits.

Yeah, Jagged Alliance 3 is a lot of fun. I really like the character system of those quirky mercs. Worthy successor to JA2 (we don't mention all the other ones).

The ambush mechanic is fun and the skill trees are varied enough to make replays alright. There are also single missions you can play and people have been adding to them. I can't claim that my opinion on games means that others will like them - I'm not reviewer or critic.
A very hidden gem (imo) would be the Expeditions games - Expedition Conquistador, Viking and Rome (haven't played that one yet). Having a game set in a historic era and exploring that whilst not adhering to it at all times, especially when fun comes before authenticism is great.
Glad to see Battletech and Othercide get some attention here. Would also like to mention Wasteland 3. Very strong tactical combat mechanics combined with good story and strong series lore.
Wasteland 3 is such a great game. I was also a bit worried you may have missed Mutant Year Zero, but it made me happy to see it on the list as well. Capes is a superhero style game that came out not too long ago. I enjoyed the demo well enough but it doesn't seem to have a great reception so far.
A bit off the beaten path, but still Tactical: Banner Saga 1,2 & 3 is a masterpiece of story tell, resource management, tactical grid & turn based combat. Start off simple and adds layers as you go. Super rich in Lore and World Building too.
Great list! Personally for me, ChaosGate and Jagged Alliance 3 FELT the most like xcom or at least that feeling of fun. Othercide and Mutant Year Zero I disliked. Othercide is insanely hard and since its a rouglite its also a bit repetitive and grindy. Mutant Year Zero felt a bit too heavy with stealth attacks to start. It railroads your playstyle too much. Midnight Suns was slept on. I admit the pacing at the beginning is heavy handed with story and mechanics, but once you get going its blend of amazing combat (devs did Xcom2) and story really create an addictive flow.
Expeditions: Rome. Truly an amazing and severely underrated RPG/TRPG. Great story, great level design, great battles and characters. Definitely try it if you are a fan of the genre.
Phantom Brigade is a lot of fun when it comes to choreographing epic looking fights, but sadly the storytelling and polishing feels a bit lacking. Still enjoy to boot it up from time to time anyways to slice and dices through enemy mech battallions with my Sword and Axe wielding Meleesquadron.
It really makes me wonder why there hasn't been a XCOM 3 made yet, I mean, almost every turn based game released since XCOM 2 has been compared to it. 8 years later, and its STILL the yard stick.
You missed Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children. Its a great game you will play for over 100h. Just to beat the story. Even now, it does get new missions.
1 game that took me by surprise was Phantom Brigade, have seen it mentioned in a couple comments here. It is turn based but with a unique twist, I highly recommend you check it out. Other than that, some solid choices, Battletech still has me hooked to this day.

I was gonna say, this is a proper list with the best games of the genre.A bit surprised with number 1 but all else in here fully deserve to be included.
If you want to play Phoenix Point with all of the DLC, make sure to install the Terror From the Void mod. It takes the game from being a bit of a mess (due to the DLC content being introduced way too early and messing up the balancing along with a few other factors) to being much closer in quality to XCOM 2. The game even has some features that some players might prefer over the two Firaxis XCOM games, especially in how it handles combat. The mod also introduces some original content that slots well into the game and plays up the cosmic horror aspects.
Unfortunately we cannot have Shadowrun Returns anymore on mobiles. The game was simply removed from the stores and even if you bought the game, you cannot download. Sad thing...
Ashamed to say that i have played most of those, and none, absolutely none is as good as XCOM :( Battletech is a close second though (modded of course) XCOM2, war of the chosen, with its thousands of excellent mods is still the king it is a disgrace that we don t have XCOM3 yet!
Its too bad the odds of Falling Skies being re-released is almost zero. That was one of the best X-Com likes on the PS3 IMO. Edit: Also Shadowrun Returns is on consoles not just PC and mobile
Good video - but I would suggest checking out the Steam reviews as well - like Phoenix Point had a rather scathing review on how the game played and it was NOT recommended, in more words than this video recommending it.
the Phoenix point feels more like what Xenonauts 2 should've been ... i played Xenonauts 1 and it's a great game but i feel if made game like xenonauts with more of the graphics of new Xcom it would be a hit.. i loved how you needed to build bases to even get missions.. and so on .
Now im sad... only a few games here I haven't done everything in. Im starting to think i might have a problem. Also i would add classified france and a little known gem romance of the 3 kindoms 10 which is the only one to use tactics outside of dynasty tactics.
Gear Tactics is just incredible, phoenix point I think is ok, but gets boring fast. On the Android side of things, check out Space Marshalls series, just fabulous, more structured around the classic commandoes series. But all in all, cant wait for the new commando to come out!
Ah Space Marshalls, haven't heard of that game in a long time! Yeah plus the original XCOM is on mobile too. I feel like tactics games like this work perfectly for mobile. Commandos was awesome!
I had high hopes for pheonix point but the janky angles while trying to target in cover just made it unplayable for me. Tried a few times but was just so horrible. Plus the dumb idea of having to carry and equip the ammo for every weapon was just slowing down the game play.
Yeah, I felt that. It's why I kinda enjoyed Gears Tactics more in that regard. The tactics were still there, they just wanted you to focus more on the gameplay. It failed in other areas, but I enjoyed that part personally.
That dumb idea comes from the original x-com game that was made in parts by the same people, so i guess they wanted to bring that retro part back. Yeah the camera jankyness is kinda bad compared to the new X-Com games, even though it got alot better with patches and that Fanpatch mod.
I feel that. I can't tell you how many times my character missed in free aim mode because of some obstruction that was not in view while I was free aiming.
Don't play shadowrun returns Instead go directly to Shadowrun Dragonfall. One of the best rpgs ever made. Shadowrun returns feels like a tech demo compared to it,because it actually was,since it was part of a Kickstarter campaign. Also Battle Brothers was a big pain and i didn't really enjoy it personally. Additionally,you missed Troubleshooter : Abandoned Children.
Yeah, I'm kinda torn between Hongkong and Dragonfall. I like Dragonfall more from the Story but Hongkong is more refined from the gameplay. Troubleshooter is great! Can't weit until they finish the next installment currently in the works (though i think that could take a couple more years considering their studio size)
Phoenix Point was su h a disaster. The lore was pretty cool but some characters were just way to goofy. The mechanic was so out of place woth its weird tentacle wrench claws.
I played Mutant Year Zero and its nothing like X-COM. Its a stealth puzzle where you have no chance to survive any open battle but instead you have to kill the enemies all in stealth in a certain sequence and with certain upgrades and there is almost no wiggle room. I was so frustrated by this game.
Were you playing on ultra hard or something? I never had that issue and found the combat pretty fair if a little too easy tbh. Maybe try a update or reinstall

I've always loved how the different weapon manufacturers give slightly different variations of each weapon in Battletech

Can't recommend Chaos Gate Daemonhunters enough. What a game. XCOM2 set in 40K. My favorite 40K game and my favorite XCOM-like, better than XCOM2 IMO.

Yeah was going to include Capes, but one superhero game was enough I felt and yeah the reception wasn't the greatest. I might revisit it later though!
I'd also highly recommend The Banner Saga games. And I'll second the Shadowrun callout, very well deserved.

Phoenix Point is the only one you need. Literally developed by those who were part of the ORIGINAL X-Com from the 90s and they killed it.

Why do all turn-based games have group-based initiative?! Group-based initiative is extremely dum. Why do people play these games?
Battle brothers doesn't do that. Every individual has their own initiative which is affected by how heavily armored they are and their fatigue.

BB is the only one in this list for sure. 99% of TB games however seem to only do group-based initiative for some reason.

I don’t recommend XCOM 2. That game was horrible. The first xcom with the mechs is the way to go.
