  • This was a stimulating episode. Carl Benjamin and I discussed how the world has changed in the past 100 years, whether Britain is a failing country, the problems of liberalism, assisted dying, and enjoying life! Enjoy!
    Carl Benjamin is a British free-speech activist who came to prominence through his RUclips pseudonym Sargon of Akkad. An outspoken critic of identity politics, Benjamin is a champion of English Liberalism, pushing back against the ideological subversion of the liberal society. Benjamin continued creating content on his new main channel Akkad Daily until November 2020, when he launched his new media venture Lotuseaters.com.

      It's true though. Even if we had a good leader, the NHS is SO expensive and SO resistant to reform that the only options to keep it going are holistic, tyrannical measures to improve "health".
      The only similar situation is the way that Britain treated fighting the world wars. You look at the finances, then say "Oh god we cannot afford this" and then you just figure something out because you're fighting to the death.
      The NHS is treated like that - Where if we can just keep it going for a bit longer then we might "win". The idea of structural reform is simply a non-starter. People refuse to consider even a Swedish approach to healthcare (public system, but you pay a nominal amount for an appointment), let alone a German or Swiss approach (private provision with state backed insurance).
      People look at me funny when I tell them that I just go to private doctors. Why? Because even though I pay vast, unprecidented taxes to prop up the NHS, the best way for me to be healthy is to get treated quickly and move on. Instead of waiting for a year and then being told the treatment is too expensive.

    They just recently released a report here in Canada that showed that we are only building 1 house for every 7 people being brought into the country. While on the job hunt many of the interviewers told me they had well over 200 people apply to job. This is exactly why I'm applying to take a trade within the next year because with all the boomers retiring there's only about a 15% replacement rate for skilled tradesmen and we are in dire need, there's so much work that most companies have 2yrs+ of jobs lined up for all things involving construction. The infrastructure of much of the west is going to bottom out if the government does not slow immigration and start pushing young people into the trades (as opposed to university).
    I consider myself a Libertarian (conservative leaning) but I know as a matter of fact that our system is unsustainable due to the handouts of the state, we will not maintain sovereignty for much longer no matter how many firearms and prep we do. All of the issues right now are directly linked to unregulated immigration, intentional inflation due to government mismanagement and now a nefarious undermining of the entire structure of western civilization on an ideological basis.

We've had 800,000 arrivals since the census. We have people living in cars and tents. And our governments have succeeded in replacing us.

    I have listened to the interview 3 times whilst painting watercolors over the last few days, mulling over Carl’s insights. I couldn’t agree more about scientism - limiting our perspective to the physical/flesh/5 senses and thus we can find ourselves stuck in a very narrow/limited individualistic rational belief system. Not too mention stifles the imagination which I think is key to this conversation and I would love to listen to an interview between Carl and Jonathan Pageau to expand upon these ideas and the existential crisis we see in the West from the sterility of our imagination and loss of connection to our traditions. As a Scottish woman living in Texas for last 20yrs, I think the US faces the same existential crisis we are feeling across the West. The depressed towns in UK are similarly happening here too. I actually believe it’s one of the reasons Trump won in 2016 because he extolled not only the American dream which is basically self responsibility but the value of our Anglo Christian traditions and I think many people who felt disconnected from the political system in this country felt indescribable meaning from him telling the truth, not Trump’s truth, but the truth.

      I've been wondering lately how much merit the following idea has:
      Society rewards logos, generally. As science and education and technology became more commonplace, and society cleaves tighter to the notion of the 'rational world', the more economically valuable a robust logos becomes, and as a consequence ethos and pathos become less valuable.
      I would argue that most religions, and particularly the fundamental argument of Christianity (Christ as Savior, and only by his grace and love will you be saved), require a certain efficacy/investment of ethos, and pathos more importantly, to internalize, whereupon these are fortified and may propagate in the world.
      Is religion/spirituality a path to navigate the world in internal balance?

    • @kerriepaterson
      @kerriepaterson 6 месяцев назад

      @@jackstack360 You’re not wrong, but maybe a little ironic. Logic is the anatomy of thought, the deconstruction, the analysis, the classification, the examination, most noteworthy, separation. We see the world in pictures/symbols, the very construct/the foundation of our languages, how we communicate and so is an illusion of sorts, of our own making. It’s not until we quieten the intellect, the self reflection that chit chats to us all the time that we can be present and feel the connection to everything from the micro to the macro. I think our ancestors looked at our world as biological, that everything including them was connected, hence the belief there was a spirit in everything existed and there was great reverence, respect and imagination as a result. Whereas today we objectify the world, it’s creatures and nature and so we feel separated from it all and by way of this process we separate meaning and sever our intuitive connection to everything around us. By way of intellect we suck the joy out of life because we spend more time contemplating the past and the future instead of being grateful in the present. As for religion/spirituality creating internal balance, maybe if it’s traditions and service is to uplift humanity, to see ourselves like our ancestors did - connected to everything.

      @@kerriepaterson I think we're talking about the same thing from different perspectives/vocabularies, but otherwise agree.
      We have made the world too rational, too static, less wonder-full. We have sought all the ways to answer almost every "why?" without allowing somethings to just be.
      I'm not yet 30, and am starting to become aware of the fact that my overreliance on intellect as a child has left my emotions under regulated, which is a persistent problem today. I'm not sure how broadly I can extrapolate my particulars to wider society, but as we have identified, society seems dismissive of well regulated emotional expression (because it's not a spreadsheet-ably useful skill?).

Only stupid people dismiss him like a knee jerk reaction and those people aren't introspective nor interesting to interact with because their opinions are second hand and Ill-considered. That type of person invariably get angry, not because they disagree but because people like Benjamin ask them to explain to themselves why they hold their personal opinions and that makes them angry at themselves but will attack Benjamin for making them feel foolish because they cannot justify opinions which include hurting themselves and the people around them, in my experience and IMHO.

    Libertarianism is acceptance of the Non Aggression Principle (NAP), which states that it is immoral to initiate the use of force (use of force in self-defense is fine, consensual use of force -like boxing- also fine). It's not a complete ideology. You tend to see similar beliefs among libertarians because they get to the same conclusion by deriving from the NAP as a starting point.

    • @jackrogers5712
      @jackrogers5712 6 месяцев назад +1

      Actually, property rights is the core of libertarianism, not the NAP. Property rights leads into the NAP, though. You did a good job explaining the NAP, 10/10. Just wanted to be sure property rights gets a fair mention. The only thing I'd add is that the NAP is against initiating force against peaceful people without consent - essentially, if a person(s) are not peaceful, you're allowed to pre-emptively strike in self defense.

    • @yuriyanu2694
      @yuriyanu2694 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@jackrogers5712 I don't think that's quite right. Yes, property rights and consent are prerequisites for the NAP, but it would not make sense to say property rights = libertarianism, or at least not as much sense as the NAP = libertarianism. And I say this fully accepting that property rights are the basis for all (legitimate) rights. Fair point on qualifications to the NAP, though. I actually reworded it a bunch in an attempt to anticipate questions about self defense, etc, but ultimately, it's probably best to start simple and clarify as the questions come up.

    I enjoyed the content. My understanding is that anything (opinions, ideologies, religions, morals, etc.) that don't come from within myself are not really "mine." Labels, of all kinds, are here to divide. Get beyond the labels, go profoundly deep within, and the answers will come. Then, maybe for fun, see if you can find a label that describes who/how you understand yourself.
    I'm apparently a contrarian/ libertarian/anarchist. That's as far as I've gotten with labels. They don't define me, I do. "We" define "them," and "they" are "us."
    I might also be crazy, ehh...so be it.

    • @jelkel25
      @jelkel25 7 месяцев назад

      You have to come to that conclusion these days if you are not either stupid, extremely adept at lying to yourself or corrupt. What do most of these labels even mean anymore? A Liberal is now an authoritarian statist, socialist one minute and doing the Fascist dirty work of corporations and banks the next. Strangely enough that also describes the Conservatives in the UK these days. You really have to have a fertile imagination to see the CCP as Communist anymore or most western democracies as democracies. Really, most people are either authoritarian statists, anti authoritarian statists or sheep that will agree with the biggest perceived bully/biggest perceived bribe.

    Love Carl's talk about his transition from "libertarianism" Even during the Ron Paul Revolution there were many that came to basically the same as what Carl was saying. That one just has to stop trying to push a revolution that really isn't under your control and can result into something you don't like. so the best you can do is embrace the clique that was going around at that time. 'Be the change you want to see in the world and if it ends up being successful and a positive change for you for the better, Maybe others will notice and want to emulate. This concept was very popular with those back then like Adam Kokesh who talked a lot about the 'Non Aggression Principle" that's also has ties to anarchism. Larken Rose also covers this being the darker side of the State and Law Enforcement agencies and the philosophy behind where should the lines be drawn concerning these agencies being able to rob you, use force upon you, or hold you against your will under the direction and authority of another. These were the conversations and debates that used to happen in high schools, colleges, and the political arena. Surely not the case now. Somehow we've regressed to now seeing debate as a bad thing and confused about what used to be commonly accepted knowledge. I guess that's the result of the powers that be purposely wanting to upend traditional norms and also what happens when, Like Carl said, when you mass introduce cultures into another that are completely different and expect harmony.

When this country is done they will just packup and move onto the next new thing, but where do i go, I'm English, this is my home, i am this land, i have no other place to go where i could possibly be English.

    Free markets are not an ideological abstraction. They are a natural result of self ownership and human action, if left unimpeded.

    I just absolutely cannot understand why you are wearing so much makeup. Why would someone so beautiful put on this much makeup? I was listening to and enjoying the video after the algorithm threw it on-then I flipped over my phone to see what video it was, and wow. It is distracting.
    Discussing ethics, rights, modern biases…and then bam. Such depth of discussion buried behind layers and layers of foundation, contour, blush, powder, concealer, mascara, eyeliner, stucco, plaster, paint, varnish, gloss, and lenses.
    Anyway. Intriguing video. Good interview. I see dialogue skill runs in the family. I’m sure I’m not the only to say that your interviews are a pleasure to listen to.

    There is a strain of libertarianism that addresses Carl’s main criticisms, which is a form of geolibertarianism. Libertarianism is based on private property rights, which begins with self-ownership. Said another way, libertarianism is based on consent. But land ownership is one of the trickiest subjects. Geo-Libertarians support private cooperative ownership of land. This is a major distinction from public ownership in which no one really owns the land and government agents don’t have a true contractual obligation to enforce rules that members of society really want.
    If a society allows its members to own shares within the territory, they can make rules that restrict migration and prevent people from buying up housing that goes unused and makes housing prices higher for the people that actually live there.
    But for this to function, you need societies that are mostly ideologically/culturally homogeneous. This requires decentralization into smaller, cohesive territories.
    This is likely inevitable in the digital age because large nations were only possible in the analog media age in which narratives were constricted and largely uniform. Societies need to re-sort themselves. This will be a messy process. 😳

  • @jaysefgames1155

    An ideology is a label that can be applied to a collection of values. Moral decisions are made according to your values and these values can usually be described by an ideology. Most of Carl's audience are National Liberals, National conservatives, paleo conservatives, or similar because the views he presents, and presumably his own values, align generally with these ideologies.

    • @radimnechut519
      @radimnechut519 6 месяцев назад

      Now this I would presume to be a semantic question, where an _ideology_ as a collection of personal beliefs and ideas means something different, than an ideology as a unified system of ideas.

    Carl hasn't looked too closely into section 230. before section 230 there was a division between platform and publisher established by the courts. section 230 gave all power of platforms with all power of publishers in one regulation. the courts ruled that they had even more power than that afterwards. basically internet companies can do whatever they want.

    Libertarians don't base their morality on feelings - it's based on self ownership and applying it consistently. It's not a feeling that you have a right to self defense, it's the logical conclusion of being the sole owner of your body. Hurting you violates that ownership and therefore defending this harm is morally consistent. No other ideology has this consistency.
