I love this song. It came out not too long after I lost my maternal grandmother when I was 18. She was the only one in my family who loved me after my grandfather passed away and after she died, I literally had NO ONE. She was a wise old bird....just like I now am. So, yeah....this song really hits home for me as I had the same relationship with my grandmother as Diane Reeves had with hers.

When I heard this song as a child my grandmother was alive and well. But it made me have to face the reality that she was not going to be with me forever and so it was sooooo hard for me to listen to this song back then. I never really knew my paternal grandmother I was blessed to have a village of grandmothers... my grandma, my best friends' 2 grandmas across the street and my husband's grandma. Now that they are all gone I can listen and smile and think about all the good times and how fortunate I was. 😊

There's nothing like having grandma around all the knowledge in the world is instilled in her, sadly today grandmother's are taken advantage of or the kind of grandmother that don't teach you nothing or abuse your children. I've loved this song since middle school, when it came out. Man, how 35 years later that this song would definitely resonate with me as a grown man. My grandma died just recently, back in January. Quietly, I've been going through it, the void that's left in my heart. Yet, through it all, I'm thankful to have had her and my granddad (he's still alive and kicking) in my life, they took care of everybody. This song helps with healing. When I heard this song as a child my grandmother was alive and well. But it made me have to face the reality that she was not going to be with me forever and so it was sooooo hard for me to listen to this song back then. I never really knew my paternal grandmother I was blessed to have a village of grandmothers... my grandma, my best friends' 2 grandmas across the street and my husband's grandma. Now that they are all gone I can listen and smile and think about all the good times and how fortunate I was. 😊
