It's good to see this channel branching out to other types of pop culture media from the 80's and 90's. So many topics within topics. The visuals are top tier as always. Loved the section with the Star Wars concept art, big props for mentioning Syd Mead, Moebius, Maquarrie and Joe Johnston. Really loved the visuals of the He man and G.I. Joe toys. Took me bit to get used to Betsy's narration. At first I got a late night infomercial vibe but then I started getting a warm nostalgic tone from her that matches the spirit of this channel.
Still looking foward to coverage of other 8bit and 16 bit games aswell as continueing the the topic of the transition to 3D in the mid-late 90's which was covered in the Donkey Kong Country video. N64 vs PS1 vs SEGA vs PC. PC gaming in general and the strange world of the internet. Although I understand these videos take time to make but I would say they are the best retro videos on RUclips. I really feel like I'm being transported back in time.
Edit: the Mortal Kombat video was the last one to talk about the 3D computer graphics revolution of the mid to late 90's which obviously DKC and Rare happened in the timeframe. Just a time of rapid advancement.

Can't wait for the next part! Mid-80s, LET'S GOOO!! I was born in '84 so it should be an even bigger nostalgia bomb than this one! LaserDiscs have a special place in my heart. Remember kids, LaserDiscs were the analog verison of DVDs. They were the size of a regular vinyl, had sound and video on both sides (you had to take it out of the player and flip it lol), they had simple chapter/scene menus for you to navigate, and of course you could fast forward, rewind, and pause. The covers they came in would have the numbered chapters on the back with text, because on the TV only the numbers showed. Sometimes there were multiple discs for the movies that required bigger space. Also sometimes, they had special editions with special features just like how you got on DVDs and Blu-Rays today: extended cuts, interviews, commentary, documentaries, etc.
Someone mentioned simply accepting Tron's visual effects as-is, and y'know what? I get it. We already had something similar with Star Wars. I remember being absolutely amazed when I first saw the original Tron. It was playing on TV, and I instantly wondered how in the heck they managed to do all those digital visuals! It never occurred to me it was computers, because at the time our own family computer was a Compaq PC-Compatible that ran MS-DOS. At that age I had no idea so much was possible.
...That was an unexpectedly long wall of text. Thank you so much for the video, strafefox!

I had no idea that Inspector Gadget and The Smurfs animated show were even older than me- I saw them in reruns as a kid and just presumed they were contemporary. Still, cool to see this era even if it's something I've read about more than Ive seen it, as the explosion of new stories and franchises came and changed the landscape... even if it couldn't change it to the point where we got all the cool things we'd ever want, like that Wild Things-movie.
And man, japanese (and probably korean) studios really got a lot of mileage out of Europe wanting it's stories as animated shows. I didn't even know we had an animated version of Nils Holgerson, I only knew of the live-action show.

When I try to think of what the creative vibe of the 2010's or 2020's is like, I draw a blank. It really does seem like the 80's were a special time with such a wild, unqiue mix of 70's softness and organic-ness, all those friendly shapes with pastel and earth tones... and the colorful hard clean edges of early computer graphics, airbrushed gradients and neon and shiny metal. Maybe with 30 years of distance, I'll be able to see what the style of the 2020's was like.

    Extremely interesting!
As small kid in the late 80's, early 90's I didn't even think about all the effort and project machinery behind all these productions.
I just took them as is. Like, it was just around the late 2000's that I learned that Tron was revolutionary upon release.
Transformers from USA, Nils from Sweden, Maya from Germany (at least the original comic/book was from there), many Chech and Slovakian, as well as Hungarian products and at that time I thought the actual drawing of each frame was the only hardship. Back to Tron, I thought at that time that it was possible "to make anything with computer graphics anyway".
Of course, since then I learned how hard it was to create all these products and I experience during the work hours how hard and near impossible it is to bring something from the idea to stable live use.
This channels helps much to learn even more details.
