  • Learn How to tie a cowboy's lasso or lariat loop in this easy to follow tutorial. A strong enough knot to take down a cow. The lasso, often used in a rodeo is made by using a honda knot, which utilizes two overhand knots.

      To the original poster, I also thought a simple bowline would work at first, but then I took a closer inspection. The loop part here naturally sits at a 90 degree angle to the standing end. That lets the lasso open up to a circle, instead of a collapsed teardrop shape.

    that's for a left hander, for a right hander tie the first over handed knot with the first bite going under not over the standing end.
    this is important due to the way the loop presents when it is thrown. ie. whether it opens properly or not.

    Lasso:
    This is a word that was used in the early days of cattle ranching,
    but fell out of favor fairly early on. Unlike many cowboy words that
    originated from Spanish descent, this one came from the Portuguese word,
    “laco,” meaning “to snare.” With the exception of a few California
    stockmen who continued to use it, the word “lasso” was replaced with
    “rope” within a few short years of its introduction around the late
    1800s to early 1900s. This fact makes the popularity of “lasso” among
    city slickers, especially journalists, in this day and age even more
    baffling. Bottom line, a rope is a rope.

      I think it’ was a word that English speakers couldn’t pronounce .. they would hear Spanish Vaqueros say “ La Soga “ and they would say “ lasso “ or “ La Riata “ and they would call it lariat.. it’s like baseball home run .. you will hear people say honron.. but La Soga means the rope in Spanish

    Испанское лассо вяжется в *другой* последовательности:
    а) стопор, с тугой обтяжкой его на конце;
    б) очко - в ту же(!) сторону;
    в) завязка очка продавливается сквозь него надавливанием больших пальцев на стопор:
    только в этом случае очко становится перпендикулярно скользящей в нем верёвке.
    The Spanish lasso is tied in a *different* sequence:
    a) the stopper, with a tight fit at the end;
    b) the point - in the same direction;
    с) the tie of the point is pushed through it by pressing the thumbs on the stopper:
    only in this case the point becomes perpendicular to the rope sliding in it.

      The Honda Knot is an adjustable (friction) loop. It's not shown in the video but you can pull on the knot right in the end, to tighten the small loop as tight as you need to and it will grip the large loop so it won't collapse.

    Wouldn't it be better to use better knots instead of overhands? Like bowline and double overhand or figure 8 as stopper

    • @WhyKnot
      @WhyKnot  9 лет назад +6

      Possibly. There are different knots for different purposes, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. The advantage of the overhand is that it reduces bulk compared to other stoppers. Whilst superb under constant tension, the bowline tends to come undone under dynamic conditions etc.

    • @BRAIDERMAN
      @BRAIDERMAN 8 лет назад

      +rinrts - Two overhand knots - done correctly - makes the 'lovers knot' - the strongest of them all .

    • @rinrts5695
      @rinrts5695 8 лет назад

      BRAIDERMAN Isn't the lover's knot supposed to be a bend knot? why would you use it here? You don't need to tie two ropes together.

    • @BRAIDERMAN
      @BRAIDERMAN 8 лет назад

      +rinrts - The 'Lover's knot' that I am familiar with can be used to tie the loop, and it will not come undone. but this vid shows that there are a range of 'lovers knots' not well published in the literature.
