When Thunderball came out in theaters, my father took my older brothers to see it, but I was too young to go. Or that is what he told me. It might have been the astronomical ticket prices, $3 to see Thunderball, an unbelievable price to go see a movie in 1965, when the price of an average movie was $1.

I know people will say differently but to me THIS movie is the first quintessential 007 film. I consider it the the best of the Connery era. It’s got so much rewatch value and I just love the fact that Goldfinger is such a smart villain with his plan that even he fooled Bind about his true intentions. The scene where Bond really figures out what Goldfinger plans to do to Fort Knox is a very well-written scene that gives a clever villain and not just a stereotype.

In Fleming's book Goldfinger's plan really was to rob Fort Knox but, like Bond in the movie, many readers pointed out how impossible it is so movie makers changed it. This created the "plot hole" of Goldfinger telling his plan to the gangsters that he then kills. Personally, I think it fits the character. Goldfinger clearly has a large ego and he loves the sound of his own voice so it makes sense he would want to brag with his brilliant plan. Of course he can't let anyone live who knows it so he tells it to a room full of people he has already decided to kill.

    • @goldenager59
      @goldenager59 3 года назад +1

"Well, why not just brag to Bond?", the rest of you out there are most probably thinking. And the answer, I should think, is that Goldfinger must assume (after the laser scene) that Bond knows at least part of the plan, and is perfectly willing to let him figure out the rest on his own, since (unlike the gangsters) he recognizes in Bond an intellect that at least approaches his own. (There's that ego again!) 😁

I was myself born on Fort Knox Army Base four years after this movie came out (General Ireland Army Hospital), and it always makes me giggle that, of all the exotic locations that 007 visits in his travels, one of them is the relatively humble north central Kentucky that has ever been my home. It is still just about possible to recognize the important highway junctions that occur in the middle part of the film, shot near Fort Knox in Muldraugh and Radcliff, where US 31W and US 60 cross. The uproarious thing to notice is that these 2nd unit Kentucky shots are intercut with 2nd unit shots that show palm trees and signs for the Miama Florida airport! It's a helluva long drive from Kentucky to Miami, I can tell you!

I’m from the area too. I thought it was funny when he said planes couldn’t get that close to the Gold vault. The end of the Fort Knox military airport runway is about a half a mile from the gold vault.… The air space is probably restricted but I’ll bet lost pilots fly over it all the time. And no one would start shooting until you actually landed a plane Inside the fence. When I was in School in the 70s we took a field trip to The Patton Museum At Fort Knox. We had a picnic lunch in the park beside the gold vault fence. Since then, they’ve cut down all the trees, and added two more perimeter fences around the vault. Now a have a lovely field of fire from a quarter to about a half a mile.

I believe the first shots were from the Miami area. The Hotel was the Fontainebleau Hotel. Been there while stationed at Homestead AFB. The shots of the planes flying over the gold vault at FT Knox were real. The movie producer received permission to do a fly-over at 3000ft. But they actually flew at 500ft alarming the base. I too know the area well, I grew up in Valley Station, a few miles north of FT Knox. Been to the Patton Museum several times…even when it was in 2 Quonset huts back in the 60’s, and the new museum. Sadly most of the armored vehicles surrounding the museum are now gone as is the 3rd Armored Division. All moved to Georgia…….Cheers

3:45 -- Bond's friend Dink is popular adult model Margaret Nolan, who was also the golden girl in the titles. She was also the casino escort of Paul's grandfather in "A Hard Day's Night" the same year, putting her in two of that decade's most iconic movies.
6:35 -- This actor was also in "A Hard Day's Night."
17:00 -- Goldfinger's demonstration to the gangsters was for his own personal enjoyment, to boast of his brilliant plan. When Bond later says that he himself enjoyed it, Goldfinger responds, "So did I, Mr. Bond." Later, over mint juleps, (17:55) Goldfinger can hardly contain his giddy excitement and pride while teasing his plan to Bond. In a cutaway, even henchman Kisch can be seen beaming.
The odd music that opens the laser scene is, as far as I know, the last time any of Monty Norman's incidental music from "Dr. No" was used in a Bond film.

Glad you enjoyed this, it was my introducing to Bond when I was a kid and all other entries I measured against this.
Interesting tidbits: Gert Fröbe didn't speak English and couldn't even repeat his lines by rote in an intelligible way as they thought he'd be able to do. So his lines were all dubbed in!
Also, right before the movie came out, preview audiences said they didn't know enough about Goldfinger - he just appeared and there was no character aspects to him. In a panic, the producer commissioned a new theme song that would describe some things about the title character and they came up with what I think is the best Bond theme of them all - maybe the best movie theme of any movie! It was literally days before the opening.
The score is what really stands out to me from this movie. That simple two note opening of the theme that pounds away in the background in key scenes. It really ties the movie together!

Gert Frobe, the actor for Goldfinger, was actually a German actor. He knew very little English and tried to read his lines phonetically, but was too slow. The studio brought in a stage actor, Michael Collins, to dub over his lines, and every line except one (when Goldfinger explains his plans) are Collins.
    Some other tidbits:
    - this was the first Bond film to be nominated for/win an Oscar (Best Sound Effects in Editing)
    - Pussy Galore was an out-and-out lesbian in the books, and in this film, it's more subtle. The idea that a gay woman "just hasn't had sex the right way yet" was a commonly-held belief, and so their love scenes was Bond "converting" her
    - the film was banned in Israel because Gert Frobe belonged to the Nazi party from 1929-1937. It was lifted when a Jewish family publicly thanked him for protecting them from persecution during WWII
    - at the time, it was the fastest-grossing film ever, with some theaters needing to stay open 24 hours a day to fill the demand; its $3 million budget was recouped in two weeks

I've recently read the novel this movie is based on and as usual, there were several differences which I usually don't mind, but there are exceptions.
The original Rolls Royce Goldfinger uses has been armored to be bulletproof. That's why there is no weight difference at customs when he replaces parts with gold to smuggle. No one looked at the original parts when he imported it to Switzerland so he could use his Rolls on his further travels.
The part with the gangsters was the biggest change to the novel. They do steal the gold, but Goldfinger has set the Gangsters up to be distractions to be caught. Meanwhile he makes it to a russian ship in a US harbour on some goodwill-tour. Low-flying the planes would make it. Even in 1987 a similar plane made it undetected to Moskow. Though Bond was not able to seduce Pussy Galore. It was clearly insinuated that she is a lesbian. But she did not want to be a mass murderer.
Oh, and Goldfinger was working for the Russians. This score was supposed to finance a large-scale spy operation.
Fun fact, Gerd Fröbe, the actor playing Goldfinger, did not speak english at the time. They used a radio to tell him what to say and he 'just' repeated it.
