    I have a 1980 Johnson 60hp. I do all my own maintenance. I had a time getting it to run right but it was worth it in the end. She runs like a top now. Your channel has helped me out so much that I’m very appreciative for it. Keep on keeping on my friend!

    Did ya hear that BRP is not going to keep making the Evinrudes anymore? They signed a contract with Mercury for their boat lines. The final death nail of OMC motors.

    Gotta 72 25hp Johnson runs good in and out of gear but when in the river it’s runs like completely crap won’t go but maybe 5 mph

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 года назад

      Hey. I think your saying it runs good in a tank but runs like crap when under load in the river. This type of problem can be hard to figure out. Its happened to me a few times. the last time it was on this 70hp, swapped the gearcase and everything went bad, turned out when I swapped it, I didn't put the original prop back on and the prop on the new gearcase was huge and bogged the motor down. Another time was a bad coil on my 28hp, would run fine until the coil warmed up then run like crap, although the coil would ohm test fine when cold they break down when they get hot. Bad exhaust gasket, would run fine with the hood off, but with it on would choke out from exhaust gases. Then the most common problem is the carb high speed orifice/jet being clogged. It can also be simply things like, fuel tank vent not open, air leak in fuel line or power head, fuel pump weak, bad condenser, burned/dirty points, timing, slop in the mag plate, bad plug wire, wrong plugs, just to name a few. I would go back to basics and eliminate each system one at a time. And dont assume anything with these things. Just because it "looks okay" isn't always the case. Check Compression. Give it a Super tune up, Check the fuel system from the tank all the way through to the plugs. You can find a manual at boatinfo.no. These are great motors and built to last. I've had a few and just did some vids on them. Parts are cheap on ebay. Thanks & Stay tuned !

    Did you make a switch for the neutral safety or did you just leave that connected in the controller? Thank you for the informative video.

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 года назад +1

      Hey Thanks. No I didn't mess with it. Honestly I couldn't tell you if it even has one, its not my motor. Thanks again !

    • @johns6504
      @johns6504 4 года назад +2

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Thanks for the reply. I know it is not a good idea to bypass the neutral safety. I wanted to wire my dash like you did because my Mercury wires leading to the controller are corroding. I was thinking a toggle neutral safety would "remind me" to make sure the controller is in neutral. Anyway, I appreciate your reply and your videos!!!

      @@johns6504 Hey. Yeah I just double checked the schematic and the NSS is in the control box and there is also and emergency cut off switch too. So all I did was replace the key switch that has no effect on the other switches. You should be able to do the same thing without bypassing it and maybe just replace the corroded wires.

    Got a question about a1993 140 hp going into safe mode or limp mode he replaced the impeller and it’s not running hot and still will go into safe mode not all the time it is a vro and he checked if and it ohms out at 17 any thoughts would be great

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  4 года назад +1

      Hey. I'll be honest with you, I really dont have any experience with the larger outboards and the safe/limp mode and what would be causing it. I've heard of it but haven't had to deal with it. I do know one thing though, never assume anything with these things, what may seem to be the problem isn't always the problem, and if it looks and test good that means nothing, parts break down when then warm up but test fine when they are cold. Its a process of elimination. Its also a pain in the azz! And just as I figured theres a ton of stuff out there on the subject and some sound like the exact same problem. Check it out.
