My first time watching your content since I'm weirdly obsessed with watching random people play this game. I absolutely love the attention to detail and the patience in which you immerse yourself into this game. And also, 45:20 this game is absolutely perfect except for that that damn shark 😂 takes me out everytime
Amazing playthrough as always! It's so rewarding seeing you pick apart a mystery like this with the level of detail that you do. Just a tip- if you'd like to satisfy your curiousity and find Milton, you should play The Unfinished Swan next... ; )
I love the way you played this game. Exploring every corner and analyzing the story as it goes on via the family tree. I watched a lot of playthroughs and this is one of the best!
Dude, I'm so glad you are doing this! I'm actually going to be experiencing it blind like you, but I just never make the time to give this one a go. No more making excuses for me, I'll get to finally see what makes this game special.
I' m happy you enjoyed it. For me it' s one of the best games. Its creativity, philosophical and emotional depth and its diversity in gameplay is special. More games should be like this. It will always stay in my mind and in my heart.
Woah what a surprise! I never expected you to play these so called "walking simulators" but I'm all for it! I love this one, it's one of favorites, so emotional and I just loved how they used different gameplay mechanics to convey the different scenarios. Of course special mention to Lewis' story. I hope you keep playing more like these!. They're such a great break from the longer and more involved games you usually play and they can tell wonderful stories.
Oh I'm so glad you're finally playing this. I played this about 6 months ago after I finally caving to all the recommendations of everyone I ever knew who played it, and it very quickly became one of my favorite games.
loved the game when it came out, and now watching your reaction to it even better, watching you play this now i just want to see your reaction to another shorter game that i loved and was before your eyes
Such an interesting game! I'm glad you took your time to poke around and make sometimes hilarious predictions. And I'm glad you were able to keep your own audio even when the game had to be muted. For a story game, I like that the true tragic events are hidden under layers of fantasy. It's an interesting coping mechanism to so much tragedy. But being a pragmatist I can't help but side with Dawn in trying to keep her children's feet on the ground. I don't agree with sealing up the past and refusing to deal with it, but I also think Edie Sr.'s stories are another way of not dealing with the past. Believing fantastical stories instead of dealing with their family's really poor choices (of course sailing a huge house on a boat was not going to work, of course you shouldn't put a swing right in front of a ****ing CLIFF!, of course you shouldn't let your son live his life in a hole (and call him a mole man to the press) instead of just telling him the "monster" is actually a train). I get why she blames Edie. The only story I can't parse the "real" ending is Barbara's. Maybe Rick actually killed her? Was he pretending to be hook man and she fell of the railing? And Milton's disappearance of course, but that's apparently in a previous game.
These little interactive vignettes affect me every time I see them. Thanks for sharing this with us! You might find some answers to your lingering questions in another Giant Sparrow game called The Unfinished Swan. It's a similar length, slightly longer.
Oh wow this was such an unexpected and pleasant surprise! I actually tried playing this years ago but for some reason it made me incredibly motion sick and I couldn't continue even though the story was so intriguing, so now I finally get to see how it ends ha ha. Trying to put together how each character is going to die is almost fun in a morbid sort of way... reminds me of the intros for episodes of Six Feet Under.
I've never played this game. I'm cracking up that you didn't notice she was pregnant. It seemed pretty obvious to me whenever your pointed the camera down toward her body. There was also that "made for smaller bellies" line when she was crawling through the secret passage. At least she confirmed it in the narration though.
You forget he has a somewhat short attention span and isn't quick on observations. I'm atleast glad he got all the environmental options for the extra dialogue (aside from the Indian flag because everyone misses that).
Such a beautiful game. Thanks. I hope you'll play Before Your Eyes sometime too. A short indy game that's such a great showcase of the storytelling that's possible with games.
Please do try Before Your Eyes, Since you liked this game, you will love that. Fantastic playthrough, this game really is amazing. Recently watched your Outer Wilds playthrough and came to really enjoy your commentary!
Yeah the game is amazing. Just beat it yesterday, and while I wouldn't have been surprised if we didn't get all answers I was hella surprised how there's so much left unanswered... I mean hell everything is unanswered. Other then that it's cool how different deaths almost all of them we can see the reason for death are their imagination and a lot of them died in a way they'd be "happy" - Gregory having fun with his toys - Lewis got crowned - Calvin got to fly - Barbara got her fame back - Walter saw the "sun"rise (obviously that's not all but it's a connection I drew while playing and I mena it's clearly a part of it)
I just played this game myself recently, and since it's short, I thought I'd watch your playthrough, see what you thought about it. And I'm glad I didn't just skip to the end for that, bacause I - despite usually being a thorough player, and trying to go through the optional routes first, like you - somehow completely missed Gus's segment. Didn't even notice the missing little drawing by his name on the family tree... Now I've gone back and did it. Thank you, and thanks for the game too for allowing you to replay those separately. I wouldn't have replayed the whole game for just that, I'd just have to settle for seeing it here instead otherwise. :)
Great choice Mapo, I'm quite certain you'll enjoy this. I absolutely love this game.. (Neil Druckmann, Sam Barlow, Greg Kasavin, Brendon Chung etc. as playtesters is also quite amusing..)
Nice seeing something different. This is why I never had the courage to get kids really. Not only because might they die. They might suffer or lead a miserable life and that would just be devastating.
So, chat... is there any secret stuff to find that maybe explains the rest of Edie's story? Or anything that expands on the curse or what Dawn says about Edie's stories being the problem? For me the Lewis section remains one of my most impactful bits in gaming. The marrying of what you have to do physically multitasking with the story being told is just genius, and how as gamers many of us can relate to the escapism and how they show that with the game taking over. It's so creative, epic and tragic. So much imagination in this game!
There is no real 'explenation' in game. there are a lot of specualtions though, first and foremost that the family curse wasn't so much 'real' as Edies obsession with it _made_ it real. Two of her children died through her and her husbands direct beglect, Molly, probably of food poisoning after she ate a ton of strange stuff because she was hungry and locked in her room and Calvin because he the frigg builds a swing on the edge of a goddamn cliff. Barbara was probably an accident, but Walters secludion and death are very much connected to what his mother did _afterwards._ The Comic about Barbara contains way to many accurate details to not have been helped by a memeebr of the household and that was probably Edie, who is clearly not above using her families tragedy for cloud. Remember the story of the 'Moleman' under the House that Dawn was so furious about? Well, I would be furious to if my Grandmother used the deep trauma of my Uncle, _her son,_ to get her five minutes of fame in the paper. She also entirely disregarded Sams wellbeing when she enshrined Calvins half of the room and what that would do to him, which could be argued resulted in how he handled his other kids and his wife and the resulting death of two of them and himself. (that one is a bit more up for debate, as Trauma can be a contributing factor in personality, but a grown man Has to take responsibilty for his own actions as well) With Lewis it is of course not clear, but it is possible that his great Grandmothers constant tales of mysterious happenings and fantastical things in the house made the contrast to his own mundane life just so much harder, epsecially after he got sober. Though I would posit, that there was very visibly a certain amount of mental illness involved in the amount of dissociation happening ate then end of his story. Milton is difficult to place, as we really don't know what has happened to him, but my own pet theory is that he simply wandered off somewhere and fell/got hurt/tumbled off a cliff/got mauled by a bear... there are quite a lot of ways an 11 year old can go missing in a countryside this fairly wild (There is an alternate theory that has to do with another game by the same people called "The unfinished swan" its a bit of a complicated rabbit hole, but either milton had an even bigger imagination than Lewis, or magic actually _does_ exist in this world) All in all the biggest 'curse' on this family is it's matriarch believing that it exists and acting more towards than against it.
@@saiyasha848 Milton was actually confirmed to be in The Unfinished Swan by the devs, so I guess part of the answer is that magic IS real to some extent.
Havent finished this video yet, but if you enjoyed this game I would highly recommend the vanishing of ethan carter, its quite similar in feel to this game.

If you look down early in the game, you can see that particular condition that Edith mentioned later. Not sure if you noticed later that it's visible. Gregory, the baby, died after they started divorce proceedings. Presumably, Sam was calling constantly because of it, and trying to find a solution, and then...
This game is heavy. It stays with you long after the credits roll. Every story is told by an unreliable narrator so theres a lot of room for interpretation. For example, Molly eats holly berries.. which are poisonous. It's very likely that Gus was crushed by the totem pole. I also find it interesting to speculate that Lewis was either gay or possibly had gender dysphoria stemming from the terms and possibilities he imagines in a partner for his fictional self. As for what becomes of Milton Finch you'll have to play The Unfinished Swan, Giant Sparrow's first game.
i don't get the dysphoria interpretation for lewis, but he's presumably bi considering you can either choose to search for a "beautiful prince" or "handsome queen"
@@the-postal-dude "handsome" is not typically a descriptor used for females and beautiful isn't exactly masculine either. "Queen" is also a very loaded term. It's easy to interpret both choices as homoerotic.
you are so underrated and i loved your play through so much! i love this game but at some point i usually get bored, but i never did watching you play, keep up the good work!!
You talk about mind fuck regarding perspective at the end, but there is more. During Barbara story, you play as Edith kid reading Edith journal, then as Edith as you relive her memories of her visit of the house. Then you see Edie point of view (you can see the hand and color change after you pick up the comic book), then the narrator of said-comic book. And then you play as Barbara ! It's wild, such a wirlwind of perspective. Now that's what I call a mise en abîme !
An unexpected Milton storyline. "And I said, I don't care if they lay me off either, because I told, I told Bill that if they move my desk one more time, then, then I'm, I'm quitting, I'm going to quit. And, and I told Don too, because they've moved my desk four times already this year, and I used to be over by the window, and I could see the squirrels, and they were merry, but then, they switched from the Swingline to the Boston stapler, but I kept my Swingline stapler because it didn't bind up as much, and I kept the staples for the Swingline stapler and it's not okay because if they take my stapler then I'll set the building on fire... 2:00:40 - I never noticed the large totem pole, they don't say exactly what happened, but I did see the parts in the basement. It's probable that he did get crushed by it.
I had a blast watching you play through this! I think this type of game, where you stop and talk about the story, suits you a lot. A game I would recomend that is similar to this one is ”The Vanishing of Ethan Carter”, the gameplay is very similar and the story is equally intruiging imo. Yet another one is ”The Forgotten City”, although this one is much more focused on dialogue, but the story is equally intruiging and compelling.

Finally got through this video after watching it at bedtime for like a week. Unfortunately, I don't have an essay's worth of things to say. It was definitely an interesting and neat game. A lot of imagination and interesting writing throughout. Works really well as this short experience. The Lewis story is of course the highlight, everyone knows that lol It's not really the sort of thing I go for to play myself, not these days. I was happy to watch it though and it was a nice change of pace. I am really confused on why one of those parts appears to be ancient classical music. Music which wasn't claimed in other LPs.
The transition from "Hell yeah, rubber duckies! We got the whale in here!" to "Oh no... Oh no... I see what's happening here."

I'd love to elaborate on two things about it, if you'll indulge me:

She may not have killed any one of them directly, but it seems clear that her own belief and Obsession with the 'family curse' and the attention it brought her made her do some very questionable things
My first time watching your content since I'm weirdly obsessed with watching random people play this game. I absolutely love the attention to detail and the patience in which you immerse yourself into this game.
And also, 45:20 this game is absolutely perfect except for that that damn shark 😂 takes me out everytime
I haven’t played the game, but I have been watching others for a week 😂
Amazing playthrough as always! It's so rewarding seeing you pick apart a mystery like this with the level of detail that you do. Just a tip- if you'd like to satisfy your curiousity and find Milton, you should play The Unfinished Swan next... ; )
I love the way you played this game. Exploring every corner and analyzing the story as it goes on via the family tree. I watched a lot of playthroughs and this is one of the best!
Oh man, I'm so excited for this playthrough. This game means so much to me. I hope you enjoy it!
After Milton went missing he became the King in another game by the same studio. That flip book was him literally showing how he left.
Every Finch has a fantastical and a reality way he died. That one was Miltons Fantastical one.
Dude, I'm so glad you are doing this! I'm actually going to be experiencing it blind like you, but I just never make the time to give this one a go. No more making excuses for me, I'll get to finally see what makes this game special.
this channel has become my go to place to watch Mapo play games I'll never play
Subtly one of the best OSTs ever? I think so.
This is a fantastic game. It's one I've looked back on really fondly for years.
I' m happy you enjoyed it. For me it' s one of the best games. Its creativity, philosophical and emotional depth and its diversity in gameplay is special. More games should be like this. It will always stay in my mind and in my heart.
2:12:00 In case you didn't notice. It's a Unfinished Swan reference. Also a very nice little game worth playing. ;)
I like the term "Exploration Game" more. :)
@@masterluckyluke Oh totally me too, it's just because that's how they're mostly known but I don't really like the term either.
What a pleasant surprise ^^ this game was on my mind for days afterwards. Glad you enjoyed it!
It still sticks with me years after
Oh I'm so glad you're finally playing this. I played this about 6 months ago after I finally caving to all the recommendations of everyone I ever knew who played it, and it very quickly became one of my favorite games.
Definitely recommend checking out The Unfinished Swan - same universe but completely different concept/design.
I am so excited that you decided to play this! I absolutely adore this game
The way you play through games brings me to almost all your series
Yessss! Love that you played this. Becoming my fav youtuber for sure
I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am for this playthrough. Unfinished Swan by the same dev is also more than worth a play.
loved the game when it came out, and now watching your reaction to it even better, watching you play this now i just want to see your reaction to another shorter game that i loved and was before your eyes
As some had already said. Milton's story is closely related to the game "The unfinished swan"
Oh wow, wasn't expecting this. Alright... I'm not gonna cry this time. Not gonna cry! Aww shit...
this is one of my favourite games and gaming storytelling experience. it's bittersweet
i didn't expect you to play this game but i'm so glad you did 😭😭😭✨
You read the letter, now, like me, you are bound to this place.
Ruin has come to our family.
Love this Game. It is the only game that made me cry, ever.
This is one of my absolute favourite games, I found you via disco elysium, and absolutely love your commentary!
YES! Can't wait to watch this after work today.
Damn you're playing all my favorite games. Amazing.
Such a beautiful game. Thanks.
I hope you'll play Before Your Eyes sometime too. A short indy game that's such a great showcase of the storytelling that's possible with games.
Good thoughts at the end. This game just stuck with me in a way I never expected
Other then that it's cool how different deaths almost all of them we can see the reason for death are their imagination and a lot of them died in a way they'd be "happy"
- Gregory having fun with his toys
- Lewis got crowned
- Calvin got to fly
- Barbara got her fame back
- Walter saw the "sun"rise
(obviously that's not all but it's a connection I drew while playing and I mena it's clearly a part of it)
One of the best short games ever made in my opinion ❤
totally didnt expect you to play this! amazing game, can't wait to watch this and see your reactions :D
Man, lewis's story almost hits home
Nice seeing something different. This is why I never had the courage to get kids really. Not only because might they die. They might suffer or lead a miserable life and that would just be devastating.
Oh my.. Guess I'll have to buy a bunch of snacks for tonight after work!
So, chat... is there any secret stuff to find that maybe explains the rest of Edie's story?
Barbara was probably an accident, but Walters secludion and death are very much connected to what his mother did _afterwards._
The Comic about Barbara contains way to many accurate details to not have been helped by a memeebr of the household and that was probably Edie, who is clearly not above using her families tragedy for cloud.
(that one is a bit more up for debate, as Trauma can be a contributing factor in personality, but a grown man Has to take responsibilty for his own actions as well)
With Lewis it is of course not clear, but it is possible that his great Grandmothers constant tales of mysterious happenings and fantastical things in the house made the contrast to his own mundane life just so much harder, epsecially after he got sober. Though I would posit, that there was very visibly a certain amount of mental illness involved in the amount of dissociation happening ate then end of his story.
Milton is difficult to place, as we really don't know what has happened to him, but my own pet theory is that he simply wandered off somewhere and fell/got hurt/tumbled off a cliff/got mauled by a bear... there are quite a lot of ways an 11 year old can go missing in a countryside this fairly wild (There is an alternate theory that has to do with another game by the same people called "The unfinished swan" its a bit of a complicated rabbit hole, but either milton had an even bigger imagination than Lewis, or magic actually _does_ exist in this world)
All in all the biggest 'curse' on this family is it's matriarch believing that it exists and acting more towards than against it.
@@saiyasha848 Milton was actually confirmed to be in The Unfinished Swan by the devs, so I guess part of the answer is that magic IS real to some extent.
@@saiyasha848 food poisoning is different than regular poisoning, molly just died of poisoning
Havent finished this video yet, but if you enjoyed this game I would highly recommend the vanishing of ethan carter, its quite similar in feel to this game.
I would be absolutely Gobb-smacked if he ever ends up playing my favorite game of all-time, "The Last Guardian"! I would absolutely LOVE to see his take on it.
I’ve played both shadow of the colossus and ICO on the channel, so I will be eventually :)
@@Mapocolops I know. I've been a silent fan since the beginning of ur channel. I was just kinda hoping I could prod u into playing TLG sooner than later. 😉 Thanks so much 4 ur reply. I'm honored man.
Oh boy this is very unexpected and VERY exciting. Love this game, it's really unique experience.
you are so underrated and i loved your play through so much! i love this game but at some point i usually get bored, but i never did watching you play, keep up the good work!!
Now that's what I call a mise en abîme !
very enjoyable playthrough - thanks
"The ratio of people to cake is too big. "
Very nice playthorugh. I think another game in this same vein that you would enjoy as well is The Beginners Guide. Strong, compact story like this one.
What a pleasant surprise, loved your playthrough! What a beatiful, emotional and sad game. A true work of art. Next up: Everybody‘s Gone to the Rapture?
Ooohhh, here's a pleasant surprise. Love this emotional, atmospheric, strange, wonderful game. Right up your alley. You definitely seemed to enjoy it. Cheers!!!
Another game with sort of similar-ish vibes I'm positive you'd enjoy, if you've never played it, is Eternal Threads. Cheers again!!😁
aww.. I played this game a couple of months ago. It was great. Funny how you talk about Ediths cast while staring at her pregnancy-belly at the beginning of the game... and didn't notice it at all.. lol 🤭 I also can recommend "To the moon".. Its short (5-6 hours) and very emotional.
Gregory and Lewis sill hurt the most
OMG, I just came home from a business trip to see THIS!? Oh my, I know what I am gonna do the next 3 hours
2:00:40 - I never noticed the large totem pole, they don't say exactly what happened, but I did see the parts in the basement. It's probable that he did get crushed by it.
If I recall right, I think the tent or beach umbrella flew into him and impaled him.
You played the cream of the crop of walking simulators right away! But I hope you'll check out more of them anyway. There are some other gems like Firewatch and The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
Getting spoiled in first 4 minutes. That is rough. Actually no, i guess book shows death dates from beginning and only pictures are updated as you discover stories.
Great playthrough, you realized that person in beginning and end of game was Edith's kid and she probably died at childbirth.
Gregory's and Lewis' stories hit the hardest.
About 1:40:00, the word I think you're looking for is "telescope".
It be interesting to see you do escape room games or puzzle solving ones using clues 🙂
I would love to see you play through the Life is Strange series as well. I think you'd enjoy them quite a bit.
"I'm a fan of bugs in frames where they can't hurt me and they look cool"
Same, dude. Except that I get the shivers when I see centipedes and shit, even in frames lol
Very unexpected and very glad it's here!
Too many books? My dream is to have this many books. And that archway full of them!
and we both know... i will be *delicious*.
Best line.
So far, you've been playing the games I've already played myself.
But this video I'm going to pass on, as I don't want to spoil a blind playthrough of my own.
Hope this game is as good as they say!
47:19 this song is so good and atmospheric
i'd forgotten just how good this game was - probably still to this day the peak of the "walking sim" (hate that term) genre.
Game Theory has a very interesting video about this game. It’s one of Matt’s more concrete theories in my opinion. You may want to check it out.
I also highly recommend playing The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
For suggested games try the evil within and the evil within 2 as well as Tormented souls , all 3 are great games, I'm a big resident evil fan and I love watching you play horror games I've been watching your channel since you played the original resident evil 2, try those 3 games I mentioned above you will love them man. 😀
A series of unfortunate events house...hmmm you don't say😔
Mapo, play Signalis. It's so far up your alley it's come out the other side and is no longer in said alley.
Hey mapo ever thought about doing video essays for the games you play, like silent hill 2 video essay......I really enjoy it
Finally got through this video after watching it at bedtime for like a week. Unfortunately, I don't have an essay's worth of things to say.
It was definitely an interesting and neat game. A lot of imagination and interesting writing throughout. Works really well as this short experience.
The Lewis story is of course the highlight, everyone knows that lol
It's not really the sort of thing I go for to play myself, not these days. I was happy to watch it though and it was a nice change of pace. I could tell having something short and unique was something you were really craving haha
Now, I suppose we will see what dear Esther is all about
On a completely unrelated note: I just realized you've never played Tunic 🤯
If you like games like Dark Souls/Fez/Outer Wilds it's for you (avoid all kind of spoilers)
Hello mapocolops. I would suggest you try to play a game called Inmost. It has some similarities with this game, limbo-like artstyle and can be finished in one sitting. Why I’m suggesting this is because that was one of my strongest expreriences in video games and i feel like it goes a bit under the radar.
I wonder where this game came from wasn't expecting it 😯
This Game Was a present and a Life experience. The Stories of the Charakters we're Kind of really Depressing and hard to watch. I really liked the parts where you can Play as animals. we need more Games Likes this.
