  • Out of his wealth of tool and die making experiences, Carl Sommer began in the machining trade in 1949 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He demonstrates the old fashioned way how they heat heated O1 tool steel for their tool and dies, and how they made their dies and punches.
Sommer, president of Reliable EDM, worked as a tool and diemaker, machinist, foreman, tool designer, and operations manager for a large tool, die, and stamping company.
There's also much more free information about EDM and die making in the highly-acclaimed book, Complete EDM Handbook, written by Carl Sommer and his son, Steve, mechanical engineer, at www.ReliableEDM.com.

That's the way I still do it as I cannot afford expensive advanced equipment. I have dozens of files and give them good use.
