Freakin awesome. I’m waiting until the Namco pinout section is complete to order. I do have to say only one odd sound (as you mentioned) is the tire screech.
This is pretty dope!!! Would this work in the Cockpit cabinet as well? For Pole Position 1 I believe after the qualifying lap you are supposed to have exactly 10,000 points I saw you had 10,100 that must be what the difference with the Mame version is but this is still really awesome I love how you don’t need to install any buttons or anything like that you can use the credit button that is already in the game to switch between games, very nice touch indeed👌🏻 Nice vid keep up the great work Jason! 👍🏻
I'm so proud of you for what you've achieved here, Jason! This is immensely cool and well done to you for seeing it through! The world needs more of this!
I bought mine. For future reference, there is already a built-in option in MAME that causes the shifter to behave like an actual switch instead of a toggle.
Good work. I think you now understand a bit more about development. Everything you've outlined is something could normally happen in the course of development.
It's so interesting to me that there was an Atari board and a Namco board. I can understand Atari manufacturing, licensing and distributing the game in the US and other territories, but why on Earth have a complete re-engineering of the board? I wonder why they didn't just have more of the same boards made and have Atari do the cabinet manufacturing/integration in the US, instead of Atari *also* having to do the whole board for their units. Duplication of the most intensive engineering work.
Working on a small run project like this can be fun and put a lot of skills to work, but wrangling other guys to do sub work and issues with parts can be the end of it.
I don't think it matters for the config for this... but modifying a text file from a Windows editor will add carriage returns at the end of each line that Linux does not interpret properly. For things such as bash scripts it will effectively break them. That being the case files are best access from Linux using the built-in "vi" editor (you'd have to connect via SSH or something and run it... which I realize is beyond the average user). Granted... I don't think it will matter for this config file but if anyone modifies it and then says they are having issues after that it's something to keep in mind.
This is so awesome. Going to try and get 1 or 2. Will you try for other games please? Maybe Monaco GP/Grand Champion, Terminator 2, Revolution X... Great work Jason.
The differences in MAME scouring are not only adding points on the qualifying lap. It adds random points throughout the game making high scores useless in MAME. Hopefully this project will get someone motivated to finally fix MAME/Pole Position.
@Mr Guru Ok, I said I believe but I know for sure that MAME pole position, to the current version adds mystery points some laps. I'm not sure why it happens but its a know issue in the high score world. I'm not interested in making another bug report about this, its known.
I so need and want one pretty please, how do I go about getting one ? I'm in Canada ,hopefully I still can get my hands on one, absolutely genius, thanks for all u do Jason.
Pole Position doesn't need the samples since Mame version 0.112u1. Will the altered source code be released? Edit: I see that AdvanceMAME is based on MAME 0.106, released in 2006.
The difference of the skid sound is a flaw of some versions of MAME, and has been corrected in at least some newer versions. That was the first thing I noticed when I played Pole Position in older versions of MAME. I was able to get the correct sound by using a different, newer version of MAME. I can't remember if either version required a sample set or fully emulates all the sounds. It's a shame that glitch wasn't ironed out in the Pi Position as it does stand out, however the multi-game appeal that other games should be able to run is why I bought one. It would be great if you can find a way to correct it. As you know, I've been a big MAME fan since the 90s and have spent a lot of time with it on my multiple MAME machines. One of the flaws of MAME is that no one version of MAME runs all the classic games correctly. To get around this, I run multiple versions of MAME and I've compiled a list of which versions run particular games the most faithful. As the MAME developers add new games and fix flaws, they introduce new problems in some of the games that previously ran great. This is yet another reason I've never put a lot of time into front ends like Hyper Spin, unless they have the ability to pick a particular version of MAME for each game. Also, another limitation of going the Pi route for MAME or AdvanceMAME with a regular arcade monitor. Fewer versions of MAME are compatible with those setups. Instead, I've used special CRT monitors that can run Windows with normal displays which I believe makes it a lot simpler to switch versions. One of my monitors just went down again, and they are rare and few people know how to repair them. The disadvantage of my route. I think going with a Pi for the Pole Position board made sense though, especially for such a small board. I can check if you want if any samples are actually used between these versions of Pole Positions. I don't believe I can just copy the samples and load them into the older version. Seems like I would have tried that. I've had to play the game with a spinner, but it works surprisingly well. I also have an extra Pole Position wheel, but for some reason when I connect the optical board, it moves in place just moving a milometer enough to tell it's turning, but that's it. Looking forward to playing the game in my real Pole Position cabinet which I haven't plugged in yet. No doubt some repairs will need to be made before I can use it with the Pi Position.
@Mr Guru Maybe they can use the sound part of a newer Mame source and compile it into their own version of AdvanceMame. They already heavily altered the code. Or someone else can do it as they have to release the altered source code per Mame's license.
@Mr Guru Well, l say give him a break! He put a lot of work into this product. Think of it more as a multi-game solution, which can have a few minor flaws. It's also priced reasonably. It would likely cost as much as this board to repair a double stacked Pole Position board, depending on the issues and who's doing the repair. And more hassle to ship it and find someone to do the work. Jason's board is a simple fix to repair a broken Pole Position PCB. Just order it, and it's shipped to you. No need to carefully package your board and send it to someone hoping it doesn't get damaged in the mail. If it hadn't been for that sound glitch, I probably wouldn't even think twice of not having my original PCB fixed. Someone is working on a switcher for this machine, so it might be possible to use it for multi-game, and run the original board. I agree fixing this problem may not be easy. But it might be possible. Also, since it's running on a Pi, if that issue got corrected in a newer compatible version of Pi Advance MAME, wouldn't it be possible to just load that version of the program on the Pi, fixing this glitch? Next to a regular Windows PC, the number of builds of MAME are far more limited. That's why I've never been a big fan of Pi's since I run a lot of different games and a wide variety of emulators. With a PC, it's been easy for the past 20+ years to just switch to whichever version of MAME best plays the games I want. On other OS's, the choices are much more limited. For a project such as this board, putting a Pi on the board made sense. Everyone's on the same page trying to figure out how to get various games working well. Someone might be clever enough to figure out how to get a sampled skid sound rather than a badly emulated skid sound. For people like me with several full size MAME cabinets running a variety of games on a variety of monitor types and interchangeable control panels, Pi solutions would be more limiting for my uses. For a Mini MAME cabinet, might be the only solution that fits vs a full size PC. And again, this was not the result of MAME sucking with emulation or the concept of emulation. It was the result of the programmers had not yet figured out how to get the correct skid sound in MAME. They should have just sampled it as the did with the explosion sound. Do you think FPGA would be any different? That's why it's probably taken years to get the FPGA Pole Position board fully working. Not an easy task. Without tons of effort, FPGA products often miss the mark too trying to reverse engineer what others have done. I've seen plenty of people with FPGA products like MiSTer and then end up switching back to PC emulation because it was still not perfect and for some systems worse, and in many cases better developed on PC versions. FPGA in theory sounds more appealing to some. Many people don't realize is even PC emulation can be cycle accurate too, with enough effort in the developing. But all of these replacement solutions are still "reproductions", and even if minor, there are going to be at least some small differences even if we can't pick up on what they are. But it doesn't bother me. Most of the games I play look, sound and feel just like the originals, and I have the original controls for a wide variety of classic games. If I were going for record scores, that's where I'd want the real boards. These reproduction solutions are equally as fun as the originals if done well. And that is the purpose of my basement arcade.
Hi n8goulet.! Any luck adding other games to this? I too purchased mine for the multi-game appeal. Based on 360deg wheel drivers, I have narrowed down about 11 titles that have a decent shot a working and I have not yet looked into their monitor orientations to see if they are horizontal... So far, I have not been able to get any other roms to load other than the PP and PP2. I am also struggling with reaching a speed above 180mph as others claim to be dealing with. I find it interesting that 180mph is the top speed in his own video. I don't doubt this can play other games but I have not been able to verify anyone who has had success yet. Have you?
how do you get one of these? I am considering buying an old pole position cabinet that's been converted to a newer racing game. want to slowly restore it to my second favorite game as a kids back in the early 80s!
where can I get this pole position arcade jason retro set. The distributor Arcade shop has been out for a few months. I will really like to purchase one.
Throughout the hundreds of posts I have seen on multiple forums , It's safe to say this ridiculous PCB was utterly rushed into assembly line phase YEARS before it should have been. I cannot state how many times I have seen this thing FAIL with every nuance of configuration. Talked to a Tech in Glendale, CA who agreed this unit is laughable.
Jason... Quick question. I'm installaing a PiPosition in a cab right now. The GND's are commoned between the two edge connectors (which is fine) but so are the +5's. Is it assumed that were only running one ARII or do we need to remove +5 and the two sense wires from one of the connectors. Thanks man!!!
