I see people claiming the humvee wasn't a military failure, yes it was, just because it was in service a long time doesn't mean it was a good vehicle. Most of the years it was in service was in peacetime, except the Gulf War and a few other occasions before the 2000's. After it was used in Iraq and Afghanistan for years it was shown to be ill-equipped for the job. Scroll through the comments of people who have actually been in the military who've used them for proof, not the wannabe tough guys commenting here.
Also, looking at the comments I think it’s funny some people assume this video has something to do with Chris even though nothing is mentioned here. I could care less, I was talking about people in general who buy hummers in the video. Everyone already knows people who buy hummers have serious problems anyways it’s not news.

" GM" lost money, THE TAXPAYER lost more money!

Ooo, true.

Tax payers MADE money. The bailout was a loan and we collected interest.
GM paid back all that loan; not like the banks!
@@kozicki4 Wrong. GM went bankrupt in 2009 after the "bailout". Look it up. Same as Chrysler. That vaporized all that taxpayer money lent in. Then instead of the taxpayer keeping ownership of the new entity, the then administration let the unions and the union health fund have most it. What the taxpayer "made money on" was the loans to the new entity after the bankruptcy. The original amount put it was wiped out by the bankruptcy.
We Marines loved our Humvees! We had so much fun with them! I know fellow Veterans who use them for daily drivers. They put a new Duramax with a allison trans and do all the maintenance on them. Hey Scotty, I like your videos and I will admit that I don't know nearly as much about cars as you, but I don't think it's fair to call the Hummer a failure. It was made built with a conventional war against a near-peer enemy in mind, not the war on terror. Those are two very different things.

The military hummer was never intended to be an armored personnel carrier. It was designed to be fast, maneuverable and very agile, much like the original jeep. Adding all that protection, defeated everything it was built to do.
The civilian versions, we're just glorified four by fours, with a different body.
Thank you someone understands
@Jeff C the H1 was somewhat similar, 2 and 3 were GM parts bin specials.
H1 is a true hummer. H2 and h3 are just pickup trucks/suv with no where near the off road capabilities of the H1
Wtf are you talking about fast and agile they were never like that. Just torquey for the terrain.
I get what you’re saying there man, but honestly riding in them for the better half of 5 yrs they were not fast at all or agile lol. Even the ones sent back to the states and broken down to be used on base were slow. Idk man, I watched a humvee windshield take some blasts and hits that makes boots crap their pants. But you’re right, it was meant to be a lot faster than most other vehicles used in the ranks at that time. They had no clue that IEDs would be the main weapon used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then by the time they got them beefed up, other kinds of transportation was in the works. If I ever go back I hope like heck to get in with a striker unit lol. I’m not trying to test my luck in a humvee no more😂🙌
The H1 Humvee didn't fail militarily. It was used through the 80s till present. They were being replaced in Afghanistan and Iraq because of the IED threat, which Humvees were never designed to handle. The Oshkosh JLTV and similar vehicles were designed from the ground up to protect against IEDs.
Um... M-1 tankers get injured and killed as well. What was the Humvee replacing?
...nuff said.
You are so right....the hummer was a good vehicle.......the military tried to task it with too many things it wasn’t built to do...it wasn’t a do all be all vehicle.
To be fair, the Humvee was designed to be like a more survivable jeep-not to be an armored personnel carrier-.
Yeah you're right and they don't take into consideration that in 1984 this was a really awesome design having torsion gears with really tough front and rear independent suspension with high clearance and low center of gravity pause the damn thing is a 1 1/4 ton rated like a Ford F-450 and there's no big huge Super Duty trucks that can go off-road like a Hummer bone stock so take that off-road concept and mix with how heavy duty it was heavy duty things suck off-road but not in this case and not back in 1984 so it's actually very awesome

I know someone who served in the middle east and he told me that hummers left behind are falling to pieces or scrapped while the many Toyota landcruiser and hilux pickups in the same area run like new, most of which are older than those hum v pieces of junk !! I also owned a Toyota Landcruiser 80 series for 18 years when I lived in the extreme arctic and it never ever let me down ! I hear it's running to this day with minimal maintanance and 500k miles + on the odometer !! Indestructible is not an overstatement !!!
The Hummer was a light recon and transport that the army pushed into service as armored cavalry. It isn't the fault of the vehicle that it was used incorrectly. Slow rolling them though Fallujah was never what they were intended for. They were great at their actual job.
The JLTV will be horrible if it ever goes against Russia or China. That high silhouette makes it a massive target.
The humvee was a massive target, but a lightly armoured massive target, unlike the jltv actually has decent armor. The JLTV isn't a MRAP, it's not so large that the it will take up attention more that the Humvee did and since it actually was designed to have armour, it performs better than the Humvee.
I used to work on HMMWV's in the Marine Corps and the only reason they break down is because the Marine Corps beats them to death and sometimes other units don't take care of them. The 6.2 and 6.5 diesel engines they use are actually extremely reliable if you maintain them. The HMMWV just needs to be maintained, if not it will end up breaking down just like anything else.
I was laughing at this video for the same reason. I was a mechanic in the Army and we had 22 HMMWV’s in my company back in the early 2000’s and they were all easy to work on, easy to maintain, and very reliable.
But hey, he’s gotta habit of bashing others.
@@Andrew_Sherman I don't think he really understands the general utility stuff humvees are mostly used for, and were designed for. Especially when he talks about the global war on terror.

Man I liked our hmmwv when I was stationed in Germany 2002 thing drove decent on Autobahn. Did get bad gas mileage and was a chore to work on. Brought it to Baghdad with us and did great, only issue we had was generator went out.
While I agree with you about the civilian Hummer, I disagree about it being under armored as a military vehicle. The original military Hummer was designed as replacement for the M1151 Mutt a Vietnam era Jeep which was a follow up (and slightly larger) WWII era Jeep. Neither of these vehicles were armored as originally produced. The under-armored Hummer was the result of the military using the vehicle in roles for which is was not originally intended.

I was also a marine and I called them Crumvees
I was a Humvee mechanic in the Army back in the 90s and early 2000s so I have extensive experience with them. I disagree with Scotty about them being hard to work on, it is a very mechanical vehicle with very few computer sensors plus the 16 inches of ground clearance means I never needed to put it up on stands to work underneath it. Now easy to work on should NEVER be confused with reliable, they do break down quite a bit mainly due to the sub par GM diesels that power them, and yes you would never want one as a daily driver, the wide 85" track makes them a handful in most driving situations. Humvees are decent offroad vehicles, their wide track makes them very stable but they are not a mud toy, they are very heavy and worse yet they are nose heavy so they tend to nose dive into any deep mud, I was also the unit recovery specialist and I have pulled plenty of them out of the mud, they are NOT the ultimate offroad vehicles as many claim.
I was a military mechanic for 8 yrs and I agree with Jared. . The biggest problem we faced were people killing the glow plugs by not letting them warm up. When we received the Humvees they forgot to send one important thing. The specialised socket to remove and replace glow plugs we made our own. As for top speed, We would cruise ours at 65 (Unless in convoy)
We’re the 90s 6.9s reliable ? I am very good on maintaining my vehicles but I’m thinking about getting a 6.9 1994 humvee, would it be worth it ?
Canada here. I remember the soldiers returning from Bosnia had nothing but laughter for the Humvee, a heavy 4-wheeled wagon that would immediately sink up to the rad in the mud and leave the Yanks stranded to the point they couldn't even leave their compounds in the rain.

Definitely agree with Scotty on this one! After driving all the military variations, I swore I would never ride in another one again. Well, my local Sheriff's department thought they would be cool by having them, not realizing it takes a daily PMCS to keep them running, and ended up spending more on maintaining vehicles they only drove in parades and glorified pot busts than what they paid for them originally. We have had to replace tie rod boots on them and you have to replace the entire tie rod end just for a blown boot (Dumb design), the batteries are located underneath the passenger seat which isn't a great place for them and we once had a newer guy arc out a battery with the screws that mount the seat to the cover and caught the HMMWV on fire because the covers were never installed or fell off the screws, the windshield washer pumps always go out, switches and gauges constantly break and if you live in a place with a lot of rain these things leak and collect water inside them constantly which leads to corrosion and mildew/musty-ness. The engine bays are so oddly shaped and cramped that getting anything inside them or out of them is a hassle from the front end, but the rear access from inside the cab is a lovely treat for us mechanics, these things also go through sensors like no other as well, the doors never close correctly or are crooked, the windows never open or close easily but the only thing I can say is they always work even if its difficult to operate them. The A/C is also a known problem to go out all the time, gasket replacement is rampant but I will say this; never had to replace or major overhaul an engine yet but the transmissions are ticking time bombs.
Something people always forget about military equipment and gear is this; "LOWEST BIDDER"
biggest kickback too
Many of these pieces of equipment like this were designed by folks ("Engineers" rather than "Mechanics") who never consider that someone is going to have to work on this thing sometimes??? And you'll do this in the Motor Pool....a lot?
Exactly on everything. these things would somehow break sitting in the parking lot of our armory between drills. Last drill it was fine. Next drill the wheels are out of alignment with different torques, the batter dies, starter burns out, just all sorts of weird electrical problems that were supposed to be resolved a month earlier.
Out of 8 humvees, 2 were reliable. they were the 2 uparmored ones with badass air conditioners in them. Oddly enough the LMTV and other large trucks worked just fine all the time.
Exactly lowest bidder.. and it was used in the military, driven through rivers, over rocks.. stuff average Toyotas only wish was possible.. also most guys in the military are young and beat up anything they touch... As did anyone 18- 30 ish😎👍
@check ya chin Hoorah brother
I am a combat veteran. I was an Infantryman in the Army, and I love Humvees. These things are solid beasts! I want to buy one and do a Duramax swap. We mainly used MRAps and JLTVs when I down range and only began using them as our MRAPs began to get destroyed. Our infantry company had only 12 humvees in our combat outpost. By the end of the deployment, we only had four operational humvees. All of the other humvees were destroyed by IEDs. Anyway, I love these things! I want a 2008 AM General M1097R1 HMMWV.
You make it sound like they were death traps. 66% of your company's HMMWVs were destroyed by IEDs? Wouldn't you rather drive around in MRAPs and JLTVs if that's the case?
The truck was designed and built way before the enemy started planting IED in the road.
Exactly, they were designed to replace the jeep in a different warfare, never seen a armored jeep.
Love Scotty, but he is not informed when it comes to the Hummer. It was never designed to be a front line combat vehicle. It was designed to move troops to the front line. Rules of Engagement change and so does the battlefield and the Humvee was not designed to be up-armored to carry tons of additional weight. The mission for this vehicle changed so it makes sense that the military look for new vehicles that can handle IEDs and urban combat better than the Humvee. It's not the failing of the Humvee as a military vehicle it simply was not designed to handled the new role it was thrust into in the Middle East. I will admit that the civilian versions are real garbage and Scotty is right about that but not about the military version.
Damn not even cris fix is safe rip
The original Humvee didn't have a air conditioner, that was added after desert storm. The vehicle was never designed to be armored, it was a replacement for the jeep.
And as a replacement for the Jeep it was designed to fight the Soviets in the cold war. The nice thing about it was that it could be reconfigured into several different version.
It’s still kinda armored
@@KENNYBIGBOWMAN Yeah, but it's not DESIGNED to take hits. This is literally just a light transport vehicle, because not everyone in the military can roll around in a bradley or abrams. As stated, it was a replacement for the willys jeep, and in the regard, it did exceptionally well.
Damn near 40 years in military service and this dude calls them a "failure."
m1911 says hello
For 3 miles to the gallon I'd expect them to be armored. Sounds to me like they should have just stuck with the old jeeps.
Next up is some kinda jeep sucks video.......
Ever get shot at in one???
@@Grinlathak The CUCV preceded the HUMV. The CUCV were just GM pickups & Blazers.
I have a feeling if I met Scotty in person he'd tell me I'm "garbage" and "deprecating in value", as he's laughing and flailing his hands in my face👉😅🖑😐, then going on to tell my family they're "stupid" for not disowning a "money pit" like me..😂.
“Out there in junkyards” Shows a picture of a Chevy dealership 🤣😂

Absolute Madlad!
@RPT Enterprise I had a 1993 Toyota Corolla car that was so problematic and garbage you wouldn't believe it. Garbage electrical system and sensors that failed one after another, horrible gas mileage, trunk and cab leaked Everytime it rained, relays burned out constantly, and the list goes on and on. After that I swore off of Toyota vehicles permanently.
@RPT Enterprise You're such a child. Thanks for the laugh.
@RPT Enterprise Can't handle what? Your immature mind? You're a really funny guy, thanks for the giggles!
Our battalion just moved all our humvees to some faraway motorpool in order to receive shipment of the JLTVs.
Also, if people actually watched ChrisFIx's video on his Hummer, it incomparable to the milspec ones. Too much custom work.
Scotty is simply talking about the base vehicle itself.
Scotty is simply talking about fiction.
You might need a HD jack and jack stands, but that is the case for any real 4x4 truck. Everything on the HMMWV can be worked on with common hand tools, including installing and removing all that up armor that was never part of the original design specifications. Unless you think a simple spanner to loosen and tighten cannon plugs is "Heavy Duty Equipment."
The HMMWVs that we are replacing are up to 34 years old, and they were designed to replace all the other light trucks the military used for support.
That JLTV is going to be a death trap if we ever get into a ground war with a real power. Being up high makes it a nice target for every RPG and canon around.
Arnold was a tank driver when he was in the army :D
Next up on Scotty: Here's why the A-10 Thunderbolt II is trash
I'm glad it's 'NOT' Monday:. I was afraid of hearing: I'm giving away a free Hummer!
Ya couldn't just wait a week or two 😂😂😂
Deployment wise, yes the humvee was replace , but in garrison it is still widely used
So the Humvee was released in 1980, the military wanted a fast troop carrier that was all terrain reminiscent of the willys Jeep of wwii. It didn’t have a ton of armor because it was meant for a European USSR vs NATO war where the amount of armor required to actually protect it from soviet vehicles would be too heavy and compromise mobility. After the Cold War the focus shifted to counter insurgency in the Middle East which the humvee was not suited for given the use of IDEs
Up next: Why round tires are garbage.
Lmfao
Yeah front and rear breaks are overkill why not choose one and save weight and money
wouldn't have that problem with a civilian Abrams tank.
Only if they’re made buy GM though
You mad GM fanboy? Hummers are garbage. End of story. And this guy is a mechanic, you are an internet troll.
Crisfix just got one, he said it was his dream car and now you making a video saying what a piece a garbage the H1 is.
That hummer had a ton of mods before buying it. Also, it was a childhood fantasy of his.
Hey Scottie, I'm intimately familiar with these, having worked at the manufacturing site. Coming from the factory, the HMMWV was not designed to be armored. This was a different type of HMMWV that was retrofitted at request from the military. It has to be shipped to another facility, not part of the OEM, to be what they call the up armored. The H2 was honestly just a GMT800 with a different body on it. I could go on and on about both of these if you want, lol. Love your channel by the way.
Hey Jon, What's your knowledge on the reliability of the Humvee vs H1 (original engine vs Cummins vs duramax) vs H2 vs H3 compared to Jeep Wrangler. Thanks a lot
@@bakerdow9884 The HMMWV and H1 are nearly identical. There were some things that came up in '05 or '06 would give me reservations about purchasing one in that date range though. I can't intelligently speak to your specific question though.
I do love their design. Portal box independent suspension, aluminum tub construction. I've always wanted to get a surplus hmmvw and do a duramax swap or something. They've got a lot of potential. But you know gm, they can screw anything up.
Had a friend in high school who had one. He hated the thing. Had to refill the tank every time he drove home from the gas station 😂👍🏻
@blackandgold51 it was a real H1, tan color. Not sure which motor it had but he always complained how horrible the mpg was. Like 10mpg maybe
lol 😂
I drive a H2 to a GM meeting. It was a 90 mile drive on flat land. It averaged six mpg on the highway.
You are a tool
Can't be true mine latest 3 weeks just drive like a loser
Chrisfix's hummer has a duramax engine well compare to the stock
which is the diesel engine which was better
And an Allison Trans
@@lukesylvester2022 _._
Every military humvee has either a 6.2 or 6.5 duramax motor in them not of them are gas
@@koltonfuller2327 6.2 and 6.5 are detroit diesels, duramax is a 6.6
Everyone in the army knows all about humvees. The doors feel like they are rattling off the hinges at about 55 mph. They also leak like an sob. All that being said, they were great off road, and we beat the piss out of them. They were also simply made, and pretty easy to fix.
A high school friend of mine's brother was in the army and was riding in a humvee in the states when the axle broke on the highway. The humvee flipped over and he ended up breaking his back.
Is Scotty having a cookout ? Cuz I Smell Some BEEF here
Maybe some chicken too
Well Scotty has way more knowledge than missfix bragging about his crap hummer, some ppl just want money and attention
Perhaps some rice with that Toyota
@@christianman5093 "Some ppl just want money and attention" Congratulations you just summed up the purpose of RUclips. Even this channel revolves around money and attention. Are you ok?
Theres a reason why you literally dont see any of these things on the road anymore, uncle used to have one, and yeah they were rolling clunkers that got like 3 miles a gallon and always had "something" wrong with them that noone could figure out
When I was a 63B in the army I was always replacing the control boxes
Omg this is the first time I see Scotty’s eyes! 3:28
Look for his old videos where he didnt wear any glases !!!
Don't look into his eyes, you'll turn to stone. Lol. 🇬🇧

Fell in love ehh?
HOLY CRAP SCOTTY DOES HAVE REAL EYES!!! I thought it was a myth!
3:27 My Dad LOOKS JUST LIKE THIS, anytime he is reading something on his phone. LMAO scotty, he even swipes his finger the same exact way
I saw a hummer on the road yesterday, saw this in my recommended today
Well well well...
Scotty,
Nothing in this video about Hummer that ChriFix has not told us yet...
He bought his dream car and he is happy and i am happy for him. He knows about cars and i trust he made a good buy...
jubjub247 but it’s a dream vehicle not a vehicle you don’t care about but yeah it’s ok for you to cheap out it’s just helps the environment by saving gas and money but I see where your coming from you ain’t a car guy and that’s perfectly fine but a dream vehicle is a dream vehicle period, it’s like saying would you like to go in a private jet and then land in paradise for the rest of your life that’s the feeling I had when I I’ll get my dream car it only cost less then 10 grand and that would be the 2001 Ford F-150 Super-Crew but only bad thing is mpg but with a tune It can get 24mpg which the will only cost $400-$1000 and that’s worth it, I’m saving money and environment and it’s reliable too so for my dream car I only have to pay 7-8 grand. The repair and gas can be reduced with a ecu tune and replaced with higher quality parts which will eventually pay off
Dream car... Pssshhhh won't be a dream when he's waiting on a tow truck and at the gas station 😂 not all dreams are good ones
@jubjub247 He makes enough money off Youtbe, merch, etc, so now he has play money to spend on fun cars. And he knows more than your average guy on maintenance and repairs, so he can cut some of the costs down. Gas and big repairs might be the worst part but its not his only car so he will be fine.
Christian Man you haven’t even watched his video huh....
I bought a few Hummers. They usually come with a back rub and cost around $100
As a former Army Motor Sergeant, the Hummer served us well over the 20 years I served. We beat the crap out of those vehicles. Under the circumstances, I think they held up well. Hummers and Duece 1/2 (M35A2) were the best of the best IMO.
Scott: Humvees are not reliable
Me: Ok
Scott: After all they are made by GM 😁😀
