The most controversial song he sang because Indians said he was denying the Indian culture... but he is just showing that Indo-Trinis can like soca and Afro-Trinis can like chutney. We're 1/2 and 1/2 in Trini, so let's live like that.
he was sending us down the right track. sure, let's all embrace our ancestral heritage - it's beautiful. but also, let's be ourselves... let's also embrace our own culture that we created here. let's be trinbagonians. unfortunately I see movement in the opposite direction.
Here after Lata Mangeshkar passed of covid at 92. I knew the name! But I was unsure where I heard it from, until I rediscovered this gem, I completely remember now, this song was responsible for her name being fixed in my memory up to this day. May she RIP. Luv this gem.
I live in London - I'm British - and am writing my dissertation on the music of Trinidad and Tobago. Thanks for posting this great record, a turning point for Indo-Trinidadian music in your wonderful history.
Love this song!!!!! I was about 9 years old living in Trinidad when this song came out :-) I thought that the lady in this video was so pretty, and Riki Jai such heartthrob (I still think he is!!) It is such a pleasure to be looking at the same video now that I am grown so many years later with a child of my own- living in NC, USA. AAhhhh, the good memories!!!! :-)
This is real old school...I was looking for this video forever! Lyrical content is good...like any other old school...real meaning. I cant stop laugh at how Trinidad real change up from long time...Rikki looking like 20 !!!! lol!!!!
This song Sumintra is true Soca it is a cross over which reaches a much wider audience ...more of this music can only enhance our unity as a .people in Trinidad and Tobago.
The hill that Rikki is singing on is in San Fernando, a Southern City in Trinidad. It's was nice to see Rikki, an Indo-Trinidadian and his colleague an Afro-Trinidadian make such a beautiful music video. The video models are beautiful, including the one towards the end of the video that did a wine for your viewing pleasure. The good old days of 1989.
That's right. I remember being on that hill when I would go to San Fernando on some weekends to my aunt (RIP) . God I wish I could do it all over again, I miss those fun loving days.
@@SirAnastasios Thank you so much. Everytime I see this video it reminds me off visiting her when she lived in San Fernando in the late 80s and early 90s. Especially when carnival used to go on, me and my family would walk up to , I think it was High Street , and there would be Carnival going on.
Lata Mangeshkar passed away on Saturday February 5th w 2022 at the well lived age of 92. This song introduced me to Icon when I was child. In peace may she lay.
Assistant? I thought that was Drupatee Ramgoonai just dancing. I think Drupatee did backing vocals on some other artists songs like Curry Tabanca. She may have been on this track too.
BBBBBIIIGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG CCCCCHHHHHUUUUUUUNNNNNNEEEEEEEE!!! please DONT delete this song!! someone had this video on youtube and they deleted it!! I just favorited it...I LOVE DIS SONG DREAD!!!
Yeah I have this song but it was not labeled so I thought it was someone else. But the other day onne of my older trinidadian family members said rikki jai made it. I love this and mor tor by him my favorites.
Unfortunately I believe Rikki Jai's best music was during the 1990s' and early 2000s'- tunes like "Sumintra" "Pumpin' (1990), "Dulahin (1998 Chutney Soca Monarch) & "Mor Tor" (2005). Chutney music on the whole has changed & it really is the film songs (theater songs) you hear from Aakash Vani 106.5 FM, or Radio Jagriti in Trinidad. Nowadays, it is Karma with Ravi Bissambhar & his sister Nisha Bissambhar who run the show- and trust me when I say it really is not worth it. Chutney & Chutney Soca has lost its original flavor & appeal. Even the Raja himself- Rakesh Yankaran is doing mostly film songs- you can't blame thaem!!!! This is not the era of Sundar Popo (1943-2000), Anand Yankaran (1965-2017) and bands like Gemini, JMC Triveni & Dil E Nadan. We are in the digital world- so everything is at your fingertips..... Wonder if people remember 33, 45s, 78s', cassettes, CDs & MP3s'- just before Napster, ITunes & even RUclips...

Few people realise that GB (Gregory Ballantyne) wrote and composed this classic for Rikki Jai 💯
