Interestingly enough I discovered this song in 1993 at Tower Records in Nashville TN while in university craving anything Caribbean. What a treat! Turned this tune up in the dormitory and the girls dem turn up - every race and creed. Great music is infectious.
Raphael Cairi Llama De Leon (Roaring Lion) 1908-1999. He once said in an interview "From fear that I might be styled a thief, I use Raphael DeLeon". When he met his father, he was told Cairi was another name for Trinidad, and that Llama was a sort of deer or goat. Roaring Lion goes back to the era of the 1930s'-40s' with artists like Atilla The Hun- Raymond Quevedo (1892-1962), Lord Beginner- Egbert Moore (1904-1980), Lord Executor (1880-1952)- who wrote the earliest calypsoes, Lord Invader- Rupert Grant (1914-1961) of "Rum & Coca Cola" fame made more popular by the Andrew Sisters during the Calypso craze in America during the 1940s'-50s'. If I remember correctly Lion wrote some material (a book or books) just like Chalkdust (Dr. Hollis Liverpool) on the subject of Calypso. He was the Calypsonian who had an audience with Pope John Paul II in 1985- the album is out there & it is considered a souvenir. One of my favorites of his would be his re-working of "Netty Netty" w/ David Rudder from 1993- "Netty Netty, gimme the ting that you got in your belly. If you cant stand the digging, gimme back me shilling". This was about sex during the 30s'. Lion's family spread all over the globe- from Trinidad to London, UK. If I am not mistaken Alfonso Ribeiro is his grandson!! Lion hats off to you sir!! May you rest in peace & may the Almighty have mercy on your soul.
Alphonse Ribeiro's Grand father is Lord Hummingbird and not Roaring Lion. When I was about 12 years old I always would see Roaring walking up the street in Mt Lambert with his German wife and about four children. They would always look at me and I always looked at them as we crossed paths. My father told me who he was, he always wore a fedora and jacket.
Wow this brings back memories of a year I went home in 1995 This was my mom favorite song. She use to call my nephew her papa chuks.when my nephew hear this song.he say that's me and granny song.lol. my nephew died of a Hart a tack when he was 9 years old Sheldon sylvester. Rip. My mom died of a Hart a tack also Rip mom I love you.
D' tune 'Papa Chunks' by Roaring Lion feat. Nigel 'Sweet Pea' Lewis rapping at the beginning of the introduction! Dis tune bring back memories for me from 1995! Dis is a re-recorded version of Lion's 1940's hit 'Papa Chunks' with a touch of Dancehall, Dub, Ragga, Ringbang, and Soca!
My mom love this Tune. And my nephew love it also. When my nephew hear this song.He will say this me and Granny song. I am just think of Them. Rip mom and Rip to your papa chunks you use to call your Grandson. Two Angels gone but not forgotten.
This was my welcome back home song as it was my first time going back home having been away for sixteen years. It was my first time going back for my beloved carnival . Great memories!!! Boss chune!! Kaiso! Kaiso!
