2016 statement made by family: We just received word that Olen Collins passed away this past December. Olen was a key figure in the Muriel Baldridge story, as he was the carnival worker that testified that he was present when fellow carnival worker Bill Gamble killed Muriel. Collins later recanted his testimony and Gamble was freed soon after.
I lived in this area during the 1980s. I remember my boss telling me this story. He truly believed that a prominent citizen who had a romantic hankering for the young girl was spurned, angry, and killed her out of spite. RIP Muriel!!✝️
I remember when I was young and visiting relatives in northwest of Jackson (Old Buck Holler near the Owsley line), they always told us that girls never, ever go out at night alone and in the daytime be close to the house. I think maybe it was cautionary because I remember them talking still about a girl who had been murdered. I am 55 years-old, so you can imagine what it was like there when I was three, four, five years-old. Half the county didn't have paved roads. Even though it was much later when I was young, they reinforced into our minds not to go out at night, and never sleep by a window. Boys could, but not girls. This story just brought all that back to my memory. They kept telling us not to even open the door at night to go out to the outhouse. I think this girl must have been what they were always warning us of, because it was 25 years since the murder. I remember visiting my cousin's home and stayed there about a week, and one night I heard something outside, so I peeked out the window to not be seen, and there two men and a teenage boy walking on the hill behind the house that was cleared for growing tobacco. They all had rifles. Grandma used to tell us that when she was young, roaming gangs of men walked around all the time through peoples' properties and would threaten anyone who said a word to them. I know it is a very old heritage in Southeastern Kentucky, but it was violent back then. It still is. There is no way I would be down there driving around alone at night, I would have been in the motel room before dark even hit. Even to this day, that is how much we were warned, and I think maybe it might be Muriel's death that they were always saying "remember that girl that got killed", they never said where or when, just that they made sure we knew not to open that door at night.
1949- folks were as crazy then as they are now. We just didn't hear about it instantly like we do these days with social media. I grew up in a small town like this in the 70's & I went all kinds of places alone. I can see why she wasn't afraid. What a sad story. Poor parents.
Her father was a stronger man than I am. But I imagine there's not a whole lot to do there back then. GOD BLESS HER AND HER FAMILY IT'S IN THE LORD'S HANDS NOW.THANKS FOR THE STORY'S. I'M FROM SOUTH WEST VIRGINIA ON THE EAST TENNESSEE AND KENTUCKY LINE IN NORTON VIRGINIA.

RIP in peace Beautiful Angel, You feel no Fear or pain now you in the arms of your Lord with all his love surrounding you, Very sad indeed, God i am sure her parents & those that herd & thinking it was just kids playing & i am sure there were kids playing & screaming in the background at the carnival too, But they must have heard her all their life in their head, Kind of make you think it was planned by that SOB, Because any other time someone would have ran to her screaming, Sad story indeed Tks for sharing & bringing her story out in the open again, i am sure she is looking down at you with a smile & thanking you, God Bless

Bless her young soul. I pray she's with the Lord today. She was a beautiful girl. Beautiful little graveyard she's in.
1949- folks were as crazy then as they are now. We just didn't hear about it instantly like we do these days with social media. I grew up in a small town like this in the 70's & I went all kinds of places alone. I can see why she wasn't afraid. What a sad story. Poor parents.
I'm really enjoying your videos. As a fellow Kentuckian, thank you for telling some of our stories.
Glad you like them!
Hey Leo, just wanted to thank you for the beautiful opening scene of the river and mountains. That was really lovely. Take care, hope Heather is feeling better!
The bridge noise is haunting, and same kind of noise by her grave. She could identify him so he made sure she couldn’t
Thank you for remembering❤

Oh man, can you imagine how bad the friends felt?
