  • Comparison between stock CORT pickups and Slash’s Seymour Duncan ALNICO PRO II.
All guitar settings between samples are the same. The amp settings are the same except the volume had to be boosted slightly after installing the Alnico Pro’s.
My personal opinion: the Cort stock pickups are slightly higher output but the tone is muddy and brittle. Very heavy mid-range and slightly muffled (almost as if they’re being played through a transistor radio). This gives the pickups a “forced” distortion instead of a natural overdrive quality to the amplifier. The Alnico’s are lower output with higher clarity and definition. They don’t sound as if they are driving the amp as hard as the Cort pickups, but they would cut through in a live setting or recording situation. You might have to turn your amp up a lil louder our use a boost or drive pedal. I play with lots of pedal effects with the amplifier clean anyway.
This test was done using the amplifiers highest gain stage. While this is a good representation of the purist sound coming from the guitar, in hindsight I should have considered testing the pickups on a lower gain stage. But as Slash is known as a hard rock lead guitarist I felt this was the best demonstration of what his pickups are likely designed for.
