    So would this be able to be used in place of “all purpose flour” in recipes? What about “bread flour”?

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  10 месяцев назад +15

      This is an excellent question. I might put together a video about this. Yes freshly milled flour can be used in place of all purpose flour. However, the weight is different. Store bought AP has been packed down in its packaging and is very dense. Freshly milled flour is light and fluffy. You need a kitchen scale to weigh your flour versus simply scooping out cups. I know that sounds annoying but this small adjustment is so worth the health benefits!
      Bread flour is called that because it is a type of flour better suited to making bread products. In the freshly milled world that is called “hard wheat”. There are tons of different types of wheat berries out there and they all bring different qualities to the table. Hard red and hard white will have the highest protein content and that makes these best suited for bread. Soft white is lower in protein and better for cookies, pastries, etc.

    It is true for every country - if you are in a situation where you can, you should grow as much of your food as you can yourself and process as much of the food you need also yourself. Getting out with plants has so many benefits, which is way beyond just having fresh produce, its antidepressants, its cultivating understanding of how nature works, its a sense of security because in time you know what you are doing and how to approach problems, and of course its way more healthier to eat own food and its incomparably tastier.

    Put the health aspect of fresh milled flour aside for a second. The flavor of fresh milled flour is so much better then store bought, it's like night and day. Store bought can't beat it. I bought a Mockmill in 2020 and haven't bought store flour since.

    I DID IT!!!
    Nutrimill has started their Black Friday sales already and the classic grain mill is $100 off right now at $179! (I got the classic because in comparison the Harvest is not capable of grinding corn it says- so no corn meal if that matters to anyone) the harvest grain mill I believe is $80 off right now. But the savings from buying the classic paid for most of my 2 buckets of wheat berries I bought too! I’m very excited to learn how to cook with this- and get those 20+ stolen nutrients BACK into my bread and flour!!

    Love it! At the agave of 26, my daughters health deteriorated to the point of not being able to walk. One of the changes we made is milling our own flour. Game changer. I’m not saying that that alone healed her but it’s allowed her to eat bread products again. After almost 2years of diet and lifestyle changes, my girl is back to about 80%. Working, serving others, exercising, and living. Our processed food was literally killing her.

    When I saw your thumbnail that said "I get upset about this" I clicked SO fast haha! I am also upset about how modern flour is processed, especially after I just learned that most flour in the U.S. is bleached with benzoyl peroxide and goes through another chemical process called bromation...something that has been banned in other countries. My family farms wheat and I knew that it couldn't be the wheat itself that is the enemy because it has many nutrients.

    Fun fact: The reason why flour started getting stripped of nutrients and tasting worse was from trains becoming standard across the continental US. This allowed for mass production. The more nutrients are pulled out of flour the longer the shelf life. Traditional flour lasted a month before the flavor started to lesson, but this new white flour (what we have in stores today) could last for years without degrading in flavor. During this time cheese production started to be mass produced too which is why mass produced American cheese tastes worse than European cheese, the same as how European flour tastes better than American flour and is healthier, due to Europe's geography being better suited for small batch production.

    i would get a mill that refines the berries into pure white flour :> of course the quality of flour at the grocery store is absolute poop but we can't really absorb the nutrients from whole grains :s plus there are anti nutrients in there! and refining the flour all the way takes those away which is good! i buy organic italian white flour because the soil isn't depleted in italy :3 eggs, meat and raw dairy are the foods that have all the essential nutrients, there's no way we can get those from wheat! flour and other starches are for making things yummier and more filling (and most importantly for the sugar :D) :3 i don't think anyone should rely on grains for essential nutrients aside from carbohydrates hehe :D

I had to scrape and save for my grain mill 4 years ago because we couldn’t afford it but it’s soo worth it!! Wheat berries are cheaper by the pound than all purpose. Long run it saves so much money. Your passion and enthusiasm for doing the right things is inspiring! I just finished grinding some rye berries by hand while watching your video. Hand grinding doesn't generate as much heat. I read somewhere that electric grinders affect the flour quality. Hopefully, that's not the case, because I don't want you to have to roll up more coins just to get a new hand grinder. Look it up, though. It is a great arm exercise, too.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  6 месяцев назад +1

      I do believe it may affect quality but I think the effect may be negligible. However, I am planning on purchasing a hand crank mill anyway just to be prepared in case we can’t use the electric one for whatever reason.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  6 месяцев назад +2

      The same could be said for absolutely everything we consume. That’s a whole separate topic. The health benefits of freshly milled versus conventional white flour doesn’t change. Even if you do start with a wheat berry that is nutritionally diminished compared to what it would have been 50-100 years ago, the fact remains that processing it to get white flour strips away whatever nutritional benefit may have been present.

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  28 дней назад

      I don’t have any way of knowing this for sure since I don’t live there but I HIGHLY doubt they’re only selling freshly milled flour at the grocery stores in Europe. And even if they were, it loses its nutritional value very quickly after being milled. If it is sitting on a grocery store shelf, it’s dead flour.

      @@faithandarrowhomestead ah, you go deeper than I meant. First of all, I like your way of thinking and trying to get the right and healty stuff . . That's what I do as well. The European flour laws has not always been strong. Doing sawdust in the flour has only ended about 150 years ago. Still, the 'food safety act' is very strong and the controlls are often; at the fields and in the mills. The scale of growers in the US is far bigger than here while Monsanto is still forbidden here with his manipulated stuff.

    Totally agree! We switched to fresh mill flour and noticed a great difference in our health! 20 years ago it was hard to find a mill, grains, now, abundance. The stores will be next to carry grains. For now, so many options for the northern states and different sources for the southern states, online. As a lifelong bread baker, took me 5 tries in a learning curve to figure out to use more moisture, less flour, and now great bread products! I remember ordering organic foods out of state 30 years ago, then slowly you saw the products in stores, and now, whole stores dedicated to Whole Foods. The food industry will follow demands. Thank you!

    What a very informative video! It was the motivation I needed to just go ahead and buy a grain mill and some wheat berries. Being very new though, one thing I don't understand, why is it that I can go to Walmart and buy King Arthur flour for $1/Lb but if I want to buy wheat berries they're anywhere from $2.50 and up for 5 Lbs. I feel like I'm being scammed. Why do I have to buy 50lbs just to get berries for the same price per Lb as flour which has been way more processed. ~Perplexed in Pensacola

    • @faithandarrowhomestead
      @faithandarrowhomestead  2 месяца назад

      Wheat berries are often sold in larger quantities because less people purchase them. You can purchase processed flour in all sorts of shapes and sizes because that’s what the mass majority are looking for. Also, the wheat berry itself is two products in one. When they process it into white flour, the bran and germ are sold as a separate product. If a company is just selling the wheat berry whole, they’re making less money on it overall. That may contribute to the price difference.
