The Cincinnati Reds have strategically navigated the 2024-2025 offseason with a focus on enhancing their roster to bounce back from a less than stellar 2024 season. Under the new management of Terry Francona, the Reds have made several key moves to improve their standing in the National League Central.
One of the significant acquisitions was pitcher Brady Singer, previously with the Kansas City Royals, alongside infielder Gavin Lux from the Dodgers, outfielder Austin Hays from the Orioles, and catcher Jose Trevino from the Yankees. These players, who collectively started in 270 games for teams that played in the 2024 postseason, are expected to bring a wealth of experience and skill to the Reds. The addition of Hays, in particular, fills a crucial need in the outfield, addressing one of the team's weaknesses from the previous year.
The Reds also focused on bolstering their pitching staff with the acquisitions of LHP Taylor Rogers from the Giants and Wade Miley, alongside retaining Ian Gibaut. These moves suggest a strategy aimed at improving bullpen reliability and adding depth to the starting rotation. Financially, the Reds face challenges with their local TV broadcasting rights, previously held by Bally Sports, now transitioning to MLB for the 2025 season due to Diamond Sports Group's bankruptcy. This shift could lead to a significant reduction in local TV revenue, impacting the team's budget for player acquisitions and overall payroll. Despite this, the Reds' management appears committed to competitive spending, as evidenced by their offseason moves.
On the player development front, the Reds continue to stock their farm system with high-potential prospects. Five Reds prospects made MLB Pipeline's Top 100 for 2025, including RHPs Chase Burns and Rhett Lowder, indicating a strong pipeline of talent that could soon impact the major league roster.
The Reds also engaged in discussions with free agent closer Carlos Estevez, showing an interest in further strengthening their bullpen. However, the extent of their financial commitment remains to be seen, given the uncertainties in their broadcasting revenue.
