Believe it or not, the comics relationship between Terra and Slade was way worse. At least here Slade basically keeps pushing her away and refusing to do anything with her, but in the old comics, they were straight-up doing it with each other.

Slade in this doesn’t do anything about it since he can straight up tell her you’re a minor and I’m an adult and not entertain her and he’s also still grooming her due to most likely waiting for her to be 18 or even worse sooner
@@oliviarogers3559 Yeah, in the movie it seems like he is manipulating her purely for her power instead of just being a creepy old guy... and he constantly pushes her away, only telling her what she wants (or thinks she wants due to both her gratitude for saving her and his manipulation) in order to keep her obedient and using her powers as his minion.
It's just weird that the comic writers would do that
The relationship wasn't this intimate in the original universes, but in the New 52, the edgy darker type rebooted main universe from Flashpoint in around 2014 they decided to make it that intimate... and that wasn't even the worst things the New52 did, that's on par with the other weird edgy stuff they decided to do.
Actually Starfire's race learns languages through skin on skin contact. She could have learned English just by shaking his hand, but she tells people that it happens through kissing cause she thinks kissing people is fun.

In the case of terra and death strokes relationship it’s not okay, in the case of the movie I think it’s fine, it provides a motive to hate death stroke even more and makes her brain washing more believable than a generic daughter wanting a fathers approval. The relationship might make you uncomfortable but that’s okay because it’s doing what it’s supposed to do, and you can be happy because it means your not a creep.
That being said, screw terra.
I hate that the authors went back on this decision due to pressure from people. Isnt Slade meant to be evil ? As disgusting as it is, it fits him and that's why they wrote it in the first place.

They pulled this movie right out of the canon of the comics. I used to collect the New Teen Titans, and this is definitely based on the arc of the same name. The Slade/Tara relationship was disturbing then too. So Slade is in his 40's or 50's. And Tara is indeed underage. 🤢🤮🤮
It’s super gross but it is an interesting dynamic. Maybe they could have done it differently but I think it works for how gross it makes you feel just looking at it.

The whole point of that sequence was to truly set Slade as a villain and showcase his deep manipulative hold over Terra, giving her a more multi-faceted character arc.
What she does later ties into this.
Plus the old comic relationship between these two was way darker and way more mature.

Here’s a fun, if confusing fact: according to James Tucker, the producer of these films, the Kid Flash here is meant to be a young Barry Allen/Flash from the Justice League. Makes no sense timeline wise but so is the idea of the Teen Titans existing before the Justice League.

@@freedomprice9173 Well JL War, Son of Batman and Throne of Atlantis all take place within a week (or at least TOA is a week after War) while the Nightwing and Robin short takes place the same time as TOA. Since Dick is Nightwing there that means him and Barry are the same age and Barry presumably became the Flash the same time Dick became Nightwing. But even that doesn’t explain how the TT exist before the JL and even if Barry wasn’t Kid Flash, it wouldn’t make sense for him to not know Batman is real in War since his sidekick would be on a team with Batman’s sidekick.

Terra was 16 when she hooked up with Slade, this is was a pretty controversial storyline back in the day. I think people forget how much of a villain Slade actually is. Not only did it he have sex with a minor he was playing abusive mind games with her just so he could have revenge on the Titans, a bunch of teens. Slade was basically grooming her.
Although this movie is good I feel it doesn't quiet capture the experience of reading it. I personally feel the relationship with her and Gar was better developed which makes her betrayal and sacrifice that much more heartbreaking. I'm embarassed to say I remember as a teen crying a bit for both Gar and Terra. Like she was really psychologically fucked up by her experiences and by the person she was mentored by. I wanted her friends to be her salvation but that isn't how it ends for her.
Actually I'll add there is a real life complexity in Terra's character and relationship to Slade, it was suggested that she wasn't completely brainwashed but a willing participant in Slade's schemes. Terra had actually gone through a lot of trauma and those experiences made her feel as though she had developed much faster than everyone around her. It was why she fell for Slade although one might question how much autonomy a Teen has in a realationship with and adult no matter how developed they may think they are. This is why she was so cold towards Beast Boy because of his immaturity and yet part may have warmed up to him because he represented her lost innocence, or maybe not. I was always questionable whether she had real feelings for Gar was just using him. What do think? Real or faked?

I was worried when they first preview this that they were going to mess up on of the great Teen Titan stories. Mainly because they were using the new 52 version of the characters and several didn't even exist in the original story. But they did a pretty good job. There was no Damian or Jamie in the comics as those characters hadn't been created yet. Jamie replaced Cyborg. Terra was more conflicted in this movie than the comics. Fun fact this storyline featured the debut of Dick Grayson as Nightwing. He had just given up the Robin role shortly before this story started. It also was the debut of another Teen Titan, who is visually in this movie but in a totally different role and aspect. An btw Kevin Smith, who you got mad at is a real person and he does actually have a podcast. So you should go on his show and give him a piece of your mind.😂😂😂

I mean, Deathstroke is a supervillain. He is not, nor has he ever been, a good person or role model. It's definitely gross, but it's not like he was a beacon of virtue up until this point. His full title is "Deathstroke the Terminator". Btw, I'm not criticizing you at all. I love your reactions, and your enthusiasm for the universe. All I'm saying is you don't have to feel conflicted, because Deathstroke is not someone worth looking up to in the first place. It was gross in the comics, it's gross now. I would never say it's okay to do, obviously; but it's a bad guy doing bad guy things. If it was one of the heroes doing this, that would be a whole other ball of wax.

The relationship between Slade and Terra was actually WORSE in the comics- with Terra and Slade definitely in a physical relationship which he used to manipulate her. Slade was at least pushing fifty at the time as he'd been a soldier in Vietnam and the story took place in the mid 1980's.

Grant was the first Ravenger (Rose became the second). He died fighting the Titans and that’s what started the original beef between Slade and the Titans.

I really hated this Terra. The Terra in Teen Titans the show was ehh, but Judas Contract Terra, she can catch these hands. If I was there me and her would have been fighting everyday. She felt like she was so entitled because she had went through some bad stuff. Girl stop it and get a grip. I don't know if she had a redemption arc because I was skipping through the movie trying to find all the scenes with Beast Boy, but I was not sad when she died.

I think the whole thing with Terra having romantic feelings towards Deathstroke was a thing in the original comic book story too. And the relationship there was way worse, apparently? At least in the edgy-as-fuck New 52 universe, I guess? In the original continuity, I think Deathstroke might've just tried to ignore her advances. I could be wrong, so don't quote me on that.
Either way, though, it's... still... pretty... y'know, all kinds of uncomfortable. It was uncomfortable then, and it sure as hell is uncomfortable now.
Also, yes, she's dead. This is a movie based on the original Judas Contract story, and it tries to be as faithful as possible to the original story, so naturally, Terra was ALWAYS gonna die at the end.

It’s even cringier in the comics. Beast Boy flat out ask Slade did he do anything with Terra and his response was what difference would it make if he did.
That issue was amazing. Very adult. Slade was contextualizing the painful manhood Garfield gad unexpectedly found himself in. Garfield doesn't even fight him. It's really mature.
Apparently in this movie continuity, they made a major change and made Flash a former member of the Titans and made him Kid Flash. Barry Allen not Wally West who has never been kid flash. Which is why the actual kid flash is gray i guess (and he is African American). Puts his "can I join the titans?" scene in Death of Superman into perspective. Bro Kevin Smith podcast exists in this world? WTF 36:47 HE IS REAL!!!! lmao

I know Terra is a victim but also... I was happy with this ending.
And they forgot the fact that Terra is a princess from Markovia , her past is very sad but she is a very cool character , i never saw a hero with the same abilities as she have so that makes her very unique .
On another note, in at least a couple of iterations that I know of, Raven takes a brief romantic interest in Robin. It seems that that’s what they’re going for with those two, but, since this is a Raven that comes later in this timeline, and thereby not in the original team of Teen Titans, it’s Damien rather than Grayson.

Slad was gross theres no getting around that. He's old enough to be that girl's grand pa. I know he don't look it but Slad is old as dirt. I'm gonna defend Tara a bit. The reason why is her realtionship with Slad was gross and toxic and abusive as heck. And the thing is a lot of the time people that are in abusive sitchuations like the one Tara was in have something in their head that tells them I need to win this person over. Tara could tell her relationship was wrong and dirty and she new the Titans really cared about her. But it wasn't untill Slad handed her over to the H.I.V.E that she was able to break free. Ya never know what's gonna be the breaking pointfor people in abusive relationships

There is no doubt that the Slade/Terra storyline is gross. But I think it's good that it was included. Happens to much IRL, and it's a good cautionary example.

Did that somehow slip past unnoticed? Was that somehow unclear to everyone until now? Of course he's doing something gross and creepy, he's an assassin who already killed numerous people prior to being introduced to the franchise. If him manipulating an underage girl using her romantic feelings for him is what made you suddenly dislike him, the issue is with you, not with the movie.
In fiction especially a superhero medium, killing a hundred people specifically non main characters isn’t a big deal and can be seen as badass for a villain there’s nothing badass or villainy about grooming a child it’s just pure evil. Additionally there’s different levels of villain, you don’t compare armed robbery to rape

Sometimes it’s nice to just have a villain that is no questions asked awful. Like we even forgive joker for some of the stuff he’s done and he is horrible. 😭😭 that being said I’m glad they didn’t go with this in Young Justice
