Excellent moving forward but terrible moving backwards. Great fighter overall. I also admired the cross armed guard style. Archie Moore, Gene Fullmer, Foreman and Norton. I wish it was used today
The most reason it isn’t used today is because it was never really a guard taught to begin with. Just more a natural selection fighters tended to prefer when first walking into a gym. That’s what I read on the guard. Another reason it mainly isn’t used is because of the Philly shell. Basically does what that does but the Philly gives counter opportunities much easier. Good defensive guard though if you prefer fighting and brawling and setting up power blows like fullmer, norton and foreman. Would definitely want to see some more people using it since it has been a good guard for MMA fighters
@@UBboxing I think it will be perfect today if people actually find a good trainer who know how to utilize it. Plus most boxers don't know how to counter it. I always look at Archie Moore. He mastered the cross arm guard to the T. Most boxers today don't know how to use the Philly Shell. They seen Floyd do it and say hey this is easy. That's far from the true
Weird point here, but i think the sewing of the thumb to the rest of the glove has reduced the crossgard’s effectiveness somewhat. When you can « grab » your own shoulder, the crossgard becomes super solid and resists powershots much better. In fact you’ll notice that most great crossgarders started their career when the thumb was separated, and that move was still doable in boxing gloves. It could even possibly explain why Norton didn’t fare well against punchers, not being able to create that solid structure like he could earlier in his career, to block the big bombs and threaten to break the hands.
@@lhommepeignoir5057 He didn't far well against punchers because he didn't know how to fight on the back foot. Cross Arm Guard is vulnerable to fast combination punchers. Look at Moore vs Patterson. Ali and Holmes pure boxers which the cross arm guard is good against

Kenny had a very underrated defense. Only some of the most knowledgeable people agree with me, but I’ve always felt that Norton was robbed in his 3rd fight with Ali, and that he should’ve AT LEAST won a close decision. Ali danced at times and opened up with flurries, but Norton used his guard to block, duck, slip, or catch Ali’s shots, and then he’d come back with the cleaner, harder, more powerful, and more effective shots. Sure Ali definitely had his moments in the fight, but Norton just had way more of those moments where he clearly got the better of things. I had Norton winning the rubber match 10-5, and THE WORST I could’ve had him doing was 8-7.
