- In this tutorial I'm demonstrating how I drew a beach scene using soft pastels on Pastelmat.
Supplies used:
*Unison soft pastels
*Richeson soft pastels
*Mount Vision soft pastels
*Pastelmat (grey)
*Fingers for blending :)
Blick Artist's Soft Pastels: www.dickblick....
I use Pastelmat paper for this drawing, but you could also use any other sanded paper like UArt, Colourfix, or Mi-Teintes Touch. The regular Mi-Teintes can also be used for some lovely pastel work but you won't get as many layers as you can with sanded papers.

Lovely mastery of color, value and clouds! I tried to do this...let’s just say that I need more practice and better paper! Also, I used chalk pastels! I have a health fear of soft pastels! Thoughts, if you have a moment? Thank you for your time if able!
I don't have a pre-tinted sheet in grey, can I use the grey color of my soft pastels set and tint with it the sheet?
Yes you can, just use a light application. You could also use white paper, it doesn't need to be tinted.

This was awesome!! Man I’m so inspired. I’m currently really into colored pencil but it’s such a slow medium that I’m thinking about buying myself some pastels for Christmas lol. Is this medium a lot more forgiving then colored pencils? Seeing your finished piece just makes me want to sit on that beach forever. It’s so beautiful
I find it much more forgiving than colored pencils! I can rework an area several times (depending on what paper I'm using) which I haven't been able to do with colored pencils unless I'm using the Powder Blender. They are also sooooooo much faster than colored pencil! Definitely give them a shot! If you're used to colored pencils, pastel pencils may be a good place to start :)

You can try slowing down the video within RUclips by clicking on the settings icon in the lower right corner of the video (the gear icon). Then change the playback speed....it won't change any sound but it can help with the video itself!
