    Don't worry, a "normal" urbanist episode is on its way, but for now I thought that you guys might enjoy this nice springtime ride!

    As a Rutgers grad (class of 1974) who lived all 4 years in Frelinghuysen dorm, this video brought a wave of nostalgia. For viewers who aren’t familiar with the area, a few captions for orientation would be welcome, e.g. “beginning at ? on the trail, heading downstream towards New Brunswick”, “crossing over the Raritan at Landing Bridge” “Johnson Park” “going under Amtrak northeast corridor line” etc.and of course:
    “on Rutgers College quadrangle, approaching the beloved statue of William of Orange. Usually silent, he whistled cheerfully as I zoomed by.

    The guy you mention in Cruising the Cut, has now sold his boat and going back to a house, most likely in a Suburb. And many others that were living on narrow boats. 3/4 of the narrow boats are actually used like we would use a camper trailer today. For holidaying in. Check out all the cool channels on narrow boats.

    Used to go on the D&R a lot when I lived in South Brunswick. A great place to walk and take the dogs.

    used to do that ride with my wife and kids quite a bit -- start in french town, down to lambertville, lunch in new hope. Ride back was always a little tougher. One time I even left them there eating ice cream while I rode back for the car.

    Most of Uk’s Amal’s were abandoned &left to rot. Till the Book’Narrow boats’ ignited interest in the 1950’s it’s kept going now by volunteer movement & people’s person interest.

    It seems pointless to have a canal end without a way for boats to enter the main waterway (Raritan). You explained that this has all been destroyed, but was that never a thing that people wanted to do? Why do you need to run the canal parallel to the river for so long?
    P.S. I biked along the D&R near Princeton many times when I lived there. Some regrets that I never tried to reach either end.

    Are bicycle bells not a thing there or why didnt you use it in the highland park segment? if its not a thing, then seriously consider getting one, it is way better at informing pedestrians that you are coming than an awkward excuse me, when you are already directly behind them.

    • @EmyrDerfel
      @EmyrDerfel 2 года назад

      Pedestrians complain about a lack of bells, but don't respond when you use a bell.

    How miserable would it be to ride the D&R on a touring (road) bike?

    • @SohamChanda42

      Not too bad actually, the ground is pretty solid and not that gravely ( given it's not raining)

    • @alanthefisher
      @alanthefisher  3 года назад +3

      Not too terrible actually, just make sure that you don't have super fragile tires mounted.

      @@SohamChanda42 does it get muddy/slippery in the rain?

      Yes, after a days worth of rain some patches get muddy and there are some puddles here and there , you'd definitely want a back fender tho, or else be sure to wear a shirt you don't care about
