Well, the monarchy exists by tradition since around 600 BCE. So that's 2600 years. Historians, on the other hand, claim that the first emperor of Japan can be traced to the 4th or 5th century CE. So that's less than 2000 years, but some of the rites and traditions go back to the early chiefs of Yamato during the Yayoi and Kofun periods. Most of the rites and traditions are adopted from the Chinese court, when Japan fell under the Chinese sphere of cultural influence in the 6th and 7th century CE.
