Just a guess but I would say they found out he was a racist,I think number 26 on his list confirms this, but this was not how they found out.He may have married her to try convincing them he was not a racist, but one cannot just switch this off.The film repeats his love of the Marine Corp. but never once his love for his wife.I would suggest that racism is rife in the military, also, that they know this, and in some cases accept it.

When this all happened the world was not WOKE!. To say he was a racists, demeans and defames her, by saying she was not smart enought to see through his act. Hey Andrew- Then Capt Russell was relieved of his command as a result of basically conduct Unbecoming of and Officer and a Loss of trust and confidence in his abiity to lead Marines. On the day he was relieved of command he was also restricted to his quarters on base. He was stationed on a SeaBee Base in Gulfport Ms. He packed a few items and left which put him in an Unathorized Absence (UA) status, along with disobeying an order from the Bn Commnader who restricted him.
After a brief investigation he had charges of insubordination, condcut unbecoming, fraternazation, unathoruzied absence, and more.

See I looked at some of this story and looked it up online to see if the convicted was still alive or if Shirley was found.
What saddened me more is there was no mentioned of Shirley's Parents, no Siblings
This lady have a family, somebody that raised and cared for her.
Very saddening you could take someone from their family marry them then take there life. You with her a few years, while her parents raised her for 18 plus years.
Wish her body was found, man he took her life, never to be seen or heard again, that so final, it's gut reaching. Taking people lives, away from society. So much Value to he country, that one man couldn't see or cherish.
    Bless 🙏🏾
