    As a DOT inspector, we were finding Autocars to be in the very small minority of the kinds of trucks we inspected, chiefly because of their age and because most were doing the kinds of work that yours was and were impractical for over the road use. So, in the rare event that an Autocar was brought in to the inspection site, it was usually very, very old. One of the points of failure was often a pitman arm was found to be loose on the output shaft of the steering gear box and your truck might even have two of those (tough to tell from the view). So, I'm recommending you have a peek at that and see what you find.

      This autocar has very, very low mileage. That's why it's in the condition it's in. It sat a lot.

    When watching Matt positioning the Case to strap/hook up the engine (abt 22 min in) it struck me - This guy has really moved up in this world. Big time!
    Think about the situation just a couple a years ago.
    I remember watching Matt working in his little garage, fiddling with all these small machines and what not.
    Now Matt is working in a huge new super fresh building, using big machines to help tear down even bigger machines.
    It makes me humble to all the work, effort and dedication that Matt has put in.
    WELL DONE Matt, you deserve everything! 👍💪
    What makes it all even better is that Matt shares all of this with all of us. THANKS! 🙏
    I'm sitting here half way around the globe still feeling involved and longing for the next episode.

    Love it. As an engineer working in the Azmari oil field in Iran, 1960, we had 7 Autocar tractor/trucks powered by Detroit 671,s. All equipped with a Tulsa wench, and geared to 2 4 x4 transmissions. You had to hold the steering wheel in place with your knee while double clutching to change gears. Keep in mind, these were oilfield trucks used to tear down-move-and reassemble the drilling rigs. Fast. No. Stout,yes. Serviceable, absolutely. We had them epuipedwith air starters. Air brakes and a huge air cleaner and a twin axel lock to help in soft sand. Love to see you brining this one back to life. Love it. 😊

    The reason you have 4 battery cables is to carry the correct amount of current (amps) to your starter. It's called parallel wiring. You would need to more than double your cable total cross section if you ran just 2 cables instead of 4 smaller ones. Love your channel and your truck!!!

    • @Hyratel
      @Hyratel 3 месяца назад +46

      was just scrolling to make sure someone else hadn't already answered and "4 minutes ago" yes, the larger cables are also an absolute bear to wrangle. it's even used in large commercial wiring, 2 wires is straight out twice the amp capacity, while being almost as easy to manipulate as the single first size.

    • @MarkSterrett

    Matt, dual battery cables allows for lower resistance with the same current draw, meaning better voltage at the starter. You could use 1 much larger cable, but it would probably be more expensive and harder to work with than 2 smaller cables.

    Hey Matt, for the winch conversion to hydraulic, the calculations for determining the required hydraulic motor torque are quite straight forward from first principles. Required max rope pull at full sheave diameter divided by the worm ratio, add worm drive efficiency losses, will give you a starting point for selection of an orbital motor torque. Suggest you contact a company like Eaton hydraulics with this information and available line pressure, they will select a suitably sized orbital motor and valving for you. Good luck with this preservation, a really interesting project. Cheers from Australia 🇳🇿 😀😀

    • @zolof911
      @zolof911 3 месяца назад +7

      Depending on the hydraulic motor size and shape, it might be an advantage to keep the last roller chain and connect the hydraulic motor with a sprocket. It would allow different placement options as well as the potential to fine-tune ratios.
      Definitely think hydraulic drive is the way to go. And please do keep the bumper!

      Two leads = current carrying capacity + cost + availability. A single lead with enough amperage capacity is going to be very, very expensive. I wouldn't have cut those leads, just sayin'. EE power Engineer.

    • @nostreamavailable9090
      @nostreamavailable9090 3 месяца назад +3

      Yeah guys some serious cranking amps there , you're both bang on the money l reckon, but what gauge wire would you have to use to get a single cable that was man enough for the job done you reckon?

    • @nostreamavailable9090
      @nostreamavailable9090 3 месяца назад

      I just based my thoughts on my experience with CB and ham gear you see, thicker power cables are just safer and better, l have been known to make dc power cables for high power rigs and linears from adapting old sets of jumper cables.
      Works pretty good.
      In radio gear if you can't get the ampage through the cables properly you end up with frequency drift and warbling or clipping audio , in severe cases can even cause a fire.
      Nasty business if you get it wrong

    • @gillisbhome
      @gillisbhome 3 месяца назад +8

      Yup this is what I was gonna post, two runs to share the amp load. Why two instead of a bigger wire?, cost, material on hand, size restrictions on routing or lug size at starter end, or ease of use. Thicker wire is stiffer and harder to bend/route (usually).

    Regarding the battery cables;
    You want to keep both sets! It's called "parallel conductors". It's easier to have multiple smaller wires than having a single massive wire for the positive and negative. It needs both!

    • @godfreypoon5148
      @godfreypoon5148 3 месяца назад

      @@godfreypoon5148you say not parallel 😂 so you saying it’s a 24volt series system💁‍♂️ I don’t think so. Smaller gauge is easier to route and bend than the heavier gauge that it needs. So two to get the gauge size needed and be able to get it routed.

    Hi Matt, consider running your hydraulics off the PTO, you can set up a couple of pumps stacked off the PTO that are set to run different pressures and flows to suit your needs. Also you can then remove the load for when you are driving and use those extra horses for dragging your load not running the hydraulics!

    I should mention that my great grandfather worked as a machinist for Autocar in the 20's in Ardmore Pa. Love seeing the autocars getting some love.
    They used to be a Pittsburg company for a couple years but didn't become Autocar till they moved to Ardmore outside Philly. They sold out to White after the war and moved in the 50's to Exton a little west of Ardmore. 54 or 55 I think. The Ardmore plant burned down in 56 or 57 and according to my family it was massive and people were scared because of all the chemicals for all those years. One of their buildings survived and was a Kiddy City till it burned in the 90's.
    White went under in 81, so I'd say you have one of the first and one of the last White Autocars...

    You said it yourself, it is not going to be a full time road rig.
    So it will basically be a local multifunction power unit.

    The bumper is a big part of the trucks design, keep it.
    If I might come with a suggestion, as an electrician I recommend that you replace the battery cables because old corroded copper gives higher resistance for the power.
    4 battery cables are better in my opinion because if they're of equal length the power will be drawn from both batteries equally. If they're of different length the battery with the shortest cables will be working harder.

  • @rontrick4411
    @rontrick4411 3 месяца назад

    The doubling of the battery cables is for a bunch of reasons: extra voltage and amprage potential in extreme temperature starts both hot and cold....extra conductivity to make up for corrosion loss in that extremely corrosive mining environment .. saves ware and tear on recharging batteries, alternators , starters and any thing elce electrical on a vehicle that is supposed to be ultra rugged and dependable... I did sound, lighting , video and stage for major events for 40 years and any electrical feeder , extention cable and hook up was always over sized to prevent failure... Auto Car was built with my kind of engineering philosophy ....fail safe....love your show ...your doing a great job on the production side for a one man band...
