It was the end of summer of 1981 and I was going down the road in a u-haul heading west to attend UC-Berkeley and all you could hear on the radio was this song--for 55 hours straight --only to find out the Greg Kihn recorded this at Beserkley Records--of Couse our band had to cover it. Well done!
Haven't heard this song in forever (I listen to Deep Tracks on Sirius XM almost exclusively) and it came out when I was in junior high so I never noticed the bass line but it's pretty cool! And I'm still digging that bass, you got a good one! Hearing it solo with just the drum track was fantastic - more please! Hope you all have a happy mother's day!
I'm 16 years old back in 2002, discovering rock the old fashioned way before you had iTunes or some other way to find media, and this song was one of my top tens. It wasn't until years later, when I misunderstood the DJ back then "Greg Kent Band, Bitches Don't Write 'em Like that Anymore" was the breakup song. Great bass brother, awesome song, and keep rocking the covers.
Good morning Troy, Guilty pleasure!! As always, love your genre busting song selections. A bass player after my own heart lol And no, they certainly don't write em like this anymore! Love watching your vids, has definitely inspired me to more perfect my right hand technique. Enjoy your weekend and another standing O for one of the most solid bass players on RUclips. Great vid.
Sounds great! I was a huge Greg Kihn band fan earlier, well-played catchy songs all around. Don't know if you have ever heard any other lesser-known tunes by them (not too many people have). In any case it's very enjoyable to hear you play along with it, it actually sounds better than just listening to the tinny original on youtube!
I had tickets to see Greg Kihn Band in Las Vegas this summer and they canceled the show. So bummed. I love the late 70s/early 80s power pop. Another great song that takes me back to this era is Yellow Pills by 20/20. Look it up. You Tone Monster! Literally.
Very cool. He's someone I might go see if he were to come around. I've been trying to catch Nick Lowe for a while now, with no luck. I'd never heard that song before... pretty good. From what I read, they had a lot of promise. Thanks Andrew!
You’ve done it again sir; excellent cover. Always a joy to watch, hands down my favorite on the platform. Learned a lot from your covers over the years! Hope you keep grooving for years to come.
This is one of those songs I put in my category of "late 70s / early 80s radio rock", along with Loverboy, Billy Squire, Pat Benatar, Red Rider, etc. Walking down the street with my idiot friends and a boombox blasting this stuff (unless someone brought a good cassette instead) on a hot summer night looking for trouble to get into.
We have played that song in almost every band I have been in. The drummer hates it though, not enough fills to make it interesting I guess. Great song, everyone always loves it. Greg Khin said it put his daughter through collage. I play it pretty close to your version so I guess I'm doing pretty good on that one! Thanks!!
That's funny... I've always wanted to play it, but never did! What? The drums get their own little snare solo every chorus! Thanks Daniel, for watching and taking the time to comment.
Always thought this was a Bryan Adams song, I bet the guitarist was inspired by the Ventures guitar player. Tasty bass on this song, as always you’re the man 🤘
LOVE your bass, man !!!! Gorgeous !!! I play a Rick, G&L and Music Man bass professionally but that's a sweet bass. Nice job on the bass. Like your personal feel and touch. That's a real bass player.
This one definitely frames a fun period in my life. I was lucky enough to be based in the Bay Area when this local Berzekeley Records artist hit it big with this smash hit. It didn't happen overnight. The man paid his dues alright. We would frequently catch his act in the clubs and Steve had a white Music Man Sabre bass that he absolutely killed. His bass solo was a regular part of the show and always rocked the entire house. Thanks for doing this bass part justice as always. Fun fact: later on as Gregs career started to slow he hired a new young guitarist to join the Greg Kihn Band. His name was Joe Satriani and he even recorded a record with them. I still have it on cassette lol. Peace.
Cool playing Troy as always, love this song thanks for the tutorial😁🤘...Also, have you tried the Sniff n' the Tears Driver's Seat song? It has a great bassline on it👍
Thanks Troy, you've managed to dust the cobwebs off another old favorite of mine. Had to grab my bass just to see if I could still play it after more than 30 years and it felt like I just played it yesterday. This was always a crowd pleaser that packed the dance floor back in the 80s and a favorite of mine to play. A simple, yet driving bass line with just enough melody to keep it interesting and plenty of room for improvisation, depending on the mood of the band and the crowd. As a band, the song was so easy we only had to run through it once before adding to our set list. First time we played it live we realized just how much the crowd loved it and how such a 'simple' song could make an average band like us sound much better than we really were. The new bass looks and sounds great, too. Hope you all enjoy your Mother's Day lunch. All the best and good health.
It's great when that happens, isn't it? (Both things you mentioned) Thanks Steve! Where do you live? Amy and Joe, from Clatter, just became "expats" and moved to Portugal after their visas were revoked in Sweden due to Covid (they'd already purchased a house and everything!)
@@TJH3113 Hi Troy, I've been living in Austria since 2001. I used to live in Vienna but now I'm in a small town about 30 miles south called Ebenfurt. It's been 6 months and I keep coming back to this video at least once every 2 weeks. Such a simple, brilliant bassline and song! The fact it's in Grand Theft Auto V's radio letting me blast it while cruising through the middle of nowhere at night in one of my favorite videogames makes me love it even more. Cheers Troy!
This song has different memories for me. It was the first time I had to learn to play quarter notes on the hats of a drum set while playing eights on the kick drum. First time teaching my brain to separate time. I wanted to be a drummer originally and actually still play but ended up spending my days as a teenager in bands and more popular local groups as a bassist. Love both instruments. I think having a good sense of what the drums are doing helps to solidify a bassist in both feel and timing. Such a great song. Reminds me too of my earlier MTV days. This one and Jeopardy with that weird octopus looking thing in the video. lol. Good times!
The first time I heard this tune back in my MTV Days, I couldn't get over what a Kick Ass Beat for a song that is talking about a somber experience that no one enjoys EXCEPT the person who is doing the actual "Breaking Up"! LOL Classic workout for the digits on those frets too! Very glad to hear that You and your Bride Miss Lynn can share the air with your Mom Troy! Missing my mom Big Time but I smile too knowing she is in Heaven correcting another poor Soul about their improper use of grammar! LOLOL Absolutely LOVE the sound of your Bass and that Style is Brilliant! Belongs in Geddy's Book! Great share as always Troy and the BEST part is when you chat a bit with us FANS! Cheers From Ohio
I was surprised to find out the meaning of the song while I was looking up some info on it while it was uploading. We had a nice lunch and then Lynn and I went to look in of some friend's cats while they are out of town for a wedding. Mom was really glad to get out of her place for a while. Thanks once again and take care!
Know the song well, but never knew who it was that sang it. That bass has a very fat/full sound for sure. I like it. Also a really good song to show how well the bass and the percussion work off each other.
Fantastic song. Very good bass too. Well done Troy. There is something very dramatic about the outro; always thought it sounded really dark or full of sorrow as the drum fills and chorus repeat.
Nice bass! The thumbnail made it look like a singlecut at first, but I like the real bass better as it is. What's the pickup? Reminds me of an Aria double-coil.
Thanks, I'm very happy with it. The p/u is actually from an old Guild bass. Joe built a case for it. He uses a lot of Kent Armstrong p/u's in his builds, often MusicMan style, but I wanted to start with something more familiar to me.

Now all you new bass players, less is more, as Troy demonstrates, you can see how much fun he is having by being where he is supposed to be. No one can say , the bass player screwed up. It's not going to happen on my watch.

Now all you new bass players, less is more, as Troy demonstrates, you can see how much fun he is having by being where he is supposed to be. No one can say , the bass player screwed up. It's not going to happen on my watch.
It took me a very long time to understand (and implement) the theory of "less is more". It's a very valuable concept to embrace.
