+bagley232 I used to be in a band, and we played this song. The guitar isn't anything special, but the song, the vocals are so awesome, so much fun to sing! Wish I still had time to be in a band....

I recall driving across New York State and this song came on the radio. The proverbial hook was so strong, I pulled over and called the radio station to find out who it was. Fabulous song. Where did the 43 years go since this concert was performed?
I was 24 when I first heard this song on the radio back in 1981 on my way home after a full long day of work. The rhythm and beat of this song along with the words energized me in minutes and I was charged up in a few minutes, even though I was feeling pretty whipped just minutes before the song came on. Even today, this song still gives me a jolt. Amazing! This one and 'Jeopardy' were his two big hits.
Charlie Daniel's death brought me here. I saw the Greg Kihn Band, the Charlie Daniel's Band, and the Grateful Dead April 22, 1979 at Spartan Stadium, in San Jose, California.
This is one of the great songs of my generation. I was in an on again, off again relationship in high school when this came out and, it was perfect and still is.
We grew up in the best place possible, Berkeley in the 60s 70s and 80s. Just out of high school we used to go to see these guys in the small clubs (esp the one on UniversityAve which I can't remember the name of right now!) and Sproul Plaza in B-town every chance we could, and traveled around the Bay Area too. We loved them! I haven't listened to them in years. I just saw that Steve died in '17. He was my heart throb. Very sad. And no they don't make 'em like that anymore. Nor the music. 🎉
Heard this as a youngin in a bowling alley with my mother. One of the few memories i have with her. Never knew the name to the song but knew the uh uh uh part. Heard this on the radio the other day and am glad i know the name to the song.
I loved watching this video on MTV. Got to see these guys open for Journey in May of 1982, right before graduation. Journey was good, but just kinda going through the motions. The Greg Kihn Band blew them off the stage. It was amazing! 🤘💖
They just don't write them like this anymore .. Damn they were right ! I was 15 in 2009 when I've heard this song i love it I've an old soul I love the 70's 80's 90's

Love it. Great performance. I just listened to a 2007 and a 2017 performance. It's sad what 26 and then 36 years can do to you. Greg's voice isn't what it was back in 1981.
Greg, thank you so much for this excellent and wonderful song. It's amazing to hear it. I'm honest with you, I listened to the song but I didn't know its name or the band that played it. Several years searching on RUclips and I finally found it. I congratulate you on that great piece of melody. Now I can see and listen to the videos of Song of Breakup👍👍👍
Greg, I've always been a real fan of this particular recording because it shows the energy you and your band were receiving and giving with that crowd. Interesting to know where and when this was. I know that you have said you were one of the original "Berkeley bands." This performance shows how comfortable you were with live performances close to the crowd, a feature of playing to college crowds.
Looks like he was in his 40's when he had his string of hits. Very cool he got to achieve. We were lucky to have lived through that time of music. Never see it's like again.
They were at their best from maybe their second album through conspiracy, and then everything imploded. I don't know why he hired a new band but their success was because *that band* was great, they needed the gestalt.
Isn't this the most amazing song ever? His voice is strong and clear, the melody is great, and the instrumentation ....well, i'm not a musician, but I think that the bass makes all of the difference, plus the electric drums. MUSICIANS: DIFFICULT to describe this, but the 16th note, after the intro.....it's a twangy, vaguely Hawaiian sound.....which instrument is that? Can an electric bass guitar do that? 🎸🎤🎼🎵🎶🎻🪕🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

In a medium-sized-ish club Kihn was an astoundingly good performer; really feelgood shows (though I never got to see him do Madison Avenue Man)
This backbeat I feel in my bones. Possibly the best live song ever. Such good energy.
