  • The Javanese horse trance ritual reenacts a 15th-century legend where horsemen opposing Islam were put under a spell, believing themselves to be horses, performing acts of self-destruction and immunity like dancing on fire and devouring raw grain and rose petals. Guided by the ceremonial leader, the powan, dancers enter and exit a powerful trance state, leaving them dazed and unaware of their actions.
