    Thanks Brian. I am about to replace the 3rd 4th and 5th handles on a 2006 BMW X5 with 86,000 miles on the clock. BMW San Diego charged me $685 to replace the last one so I owe you a beer or three.

    I like that you use the heck out of that Dewalt impact, after doing maintenance and repairs on my own vehicles I've learned how much time you can save by using a drill or impact. It seems to be much less frustrating. Same goes for appliance and general home repair. Keep up the great videos Brian, they are very much appreciated.

    For those gaskets that are fighting you behind the handle I clean them where they are with a little soapywater in a cup and a small paint brush. Then I spray some silicone on a small foam brush and it gives them some slippery pliability!

    Just did this repair on my X5 this past weekend. When you go to put the handle back into the door, you need to have the door carrier in the open position. You need to use your non marring pry tool to jamb the carrier in the open position so that the handle doesn't scratch the paint on the door since the back of the handle will be away from the door.

    good info. Took me 4 hours to change one, but 2 hours to get that little ball joint on and the white clamp in place and some skinned knuckles. I tried to get the ball on the old one "on the bench" and it would not go on. I took a drill bit and compared the old ball hole with the nes one. The new one hole was smaller so I "carefully drilles the new one untill I could get it on the old one, then and only then was I able to get it in place---a tip BEFORE you insert in door, try the ball on the old one.

  • @MR2Aviator
    @MR2Aviator 8 лет назад

    Snapping the ball joint to the cable first as shown in Brian's video before attaching the handle I believe works better than what is shown in other videos because if you connect the handle first then it is more difficult to pull the cable down far enough to snap onto the ball joint. However I later found that the ball joint is on a spring loaded swivel so you can push up on the ball joint to reach the cable connector. None of the videos I have seen so far show the tech re-installing the whole mechanism so you are on your own in that sequence. Both my front doors broke at the same time during a hard freeze. The first door I went by Brian's video. The second I followed another video and it took longer on the second because of the problem I had trying to connect the ball joint, that is until I noticed the spring on the ball.

    I am thinking about creating a repair kit to fix the existing one. I tried several generic and they dont fit and now working on using JB Weld but I think I could fabricate a steel part to support where the casting breaks. I would like to figure out how much demand there would be for it. 3 of 4 of the handles broke this month on my 2002 X5.

    Hey Brian, I have a 97 bmw 740il and the door does the same thing but the interior handle won't open it either. I got it to open by accident one day, and I just didn't lock it for days. Then I went into an Inner city area and didn't want to risk losing all my valuables in the car so I locked it. And I came out to leave, and it had done it again. But no luck to get it unlocked again. What can I do to fix it? I'm thinking actuator? But I could be wrong.

    is it a must to disconnect the battery before removing the airbag? BMW does a trick with code which screws up electronics and door lock when battery gets disconnected. I learned that in a hard way when I bought a battery from Autozone and replaced instead of going to the st(d)ealer.

    The BMW dealership here Omaha, NE. just got purchased from Markel BMW.....by H&H Chevrolet. Fortunately they retained the parts & service guys who are actually decent guys. The shop guys are an older group & the prices are typical for Dealer standards but I needed a Radiator reservoir that has the AT thermostat plug-in & the floating fluid level rod. It was Saturday & they close @ 2pm . I called at 1:55 and asked if they had the part on hand. He said yes but we close in 5min. He said if I was leaving now & lived local, that he would wait for me..... Right on! You know I gotta have it done by Work Monday morning. I forgot to mention that I had just paid Dane; owner of "STAR CLASS" motors in Papillion, NE. $400+ dollars to replace the same part but he {Ripped Me Off}.

      Abdulalah Faraj I really, really like your question. I will answer it as honestly and best as I can. I think that humility and 10k hours of practical application go a long way. For that to happen you really have to be stubborn in a good way- the way that makes you see a task through. Limited means and humble circumstances due to being raised in a large family meant if I wanted something, I had to make it happen for myself. The hours make you humble too. There's a lot of frustration that crops up as you go. Keeping a cool head through it teaches mental and emotional discipline. Controlling your mind like the powerful tool it is keeps your mind from wrecking into the ditch of anger and frustration like a truck. When you yield to lesser emotions (that God gave to be used as a limited stimulus only) you become stuck and diverted from whatever greater good you could be bringing to manifest into the lives of those around you. That anger from frustration can make you quit or give up, but worse, it can become a harmful addiction just like alcohol or hard drugs. Anger is a gift to motivate and stimulate needed action, but you have to be able to transition from the anger to the action that is needed. Anger is best used the way a capacitor is used- to start something greater. With practice and awareness, great focus can follow anger and displace it. From there, inspiration from outside of you can give you answers and clarity known by those who strive to master their emotions through right thinking.
      Best wishes to you as well. Great question!

    Those gaskets always benefit from a clean and wipe down with dash cleaner, so they go back clean on a clean paint. That way no dirt lines from a slight mismatch.
    As to dealers, the local BMW dealers here give good service, as they also support many decades old vehicles that are in daily use. They make money from service, spares and do not want to turn down business, as there are a lot of non OE avenues also available along with aftermarket and used spares. They are also better service wise than certain other dealers, who seem to thing that their spares are special and price accordingly, just because they are stamped with a starred flag but are made in Korea.
    Nice with the Spanky surprise there.......

  • @edwardmuthee
    @edwardmuthee 9 лет назад +1

    Useful tip when attempting this kind of work, as soon as you break lose the door panel, first and foremost use a couple of zip ties to secure the inner cable the attaches to the interior door release handle so the cable is not loose and flapping around. There are a couple of plastic retaining hooks attached to the door latch itself which are very brittle. Once they break, you won't be able to to open the door from inside meaning you may have to replace the entire latch assembly which may cost a pretty penny and you will be forced to do half of this job again.

    • @edwardmuthee
      @edwardmuthee 9 лет назад

      By the way a good way to know that the inner plastic retainers have been damaged is after you assembled the whole door, the inner door release handle will hang about quater way cracked but won't open the door from inside. Hope this helps.

  • @jetjazz05

    I always wanted to make a gasket company lol. I find it's a real pain to get ahold of all the weather sealing gaskets for cars, I thought it'd be cool to just bundle everything in a kit (maybe have a basic and complete package depending on cost), include everything like door seals and tail light seals, all that kind of good stuff. I find a lot of cars they quit making the gaskets after like 10-15 years? What the hell? That's just when you need to start replacing that kind of thing. Then you're stuck with buying like a generic door seal and cutting it to shape... I rather it be like the original pre-formed.

    The E53 X5 door handles are the cheapest piece of crap handles I've had on any car I've ever owned. For example, the handles on my old Volvo 850 were easily 5 to 10 times stronger. In addition, the X5 handles require you to pull out AND up. Stupid. I've had passengers who could not open the door because they were, as you might expect, trying to pull straight out.
