You are SO right about the car tires. Tried to make car tire Jugger armor for a P/A event, and eventually gave up and vowed to never attempt it again unless I had a full shop to do it in.
I'm so guilty of hoarding old junk that I keep saying "I can totally use this" but realistically it will sit in a box for years. It's the curse of the wastelander.
You can usually get bike tires, chains and everything bike related for free in bike repair shops if you are polite. They need to pay for disposal of junk parts, as I was told by bike repair shop owner. So they will be happy to get rid of stuff.
Try asking hotels and motels if they have any sheets, blankets, comforters, towels and even old clothes they're going to throw away. If sheets and towels get stained or have holes in them they usually just toss them. And the lost and found boxes sometimes have clothes, shoes and other random stuff.
I think a lot of people, when they first get into postapo and find stuff think, that they must use the exact same things and make it look exactly the same. But actually, I find that a great way of figuring out where to get stuff is to think like a character from a setting they're going for. Then it all gets obvious, that things like second-hand stores, garages, barns, junkyards, military stores and so on are great places. And if some of those are unavailable to you, think of what could be in them, and think where to find similar ones - flee markets and internet. (btw, wild garbage dumps can also be a good source. Sometimes, when going through forests somewhat close to cities, you can find old washing machines, refrigerators, car parts, tv's and stuff like that. Mostly - it's garbage, but sometimes you can find useful stuff) Then there's full on scavenger mode, but for that it's best to have some knowledge about the setting for the outfit, general idea of what you want to do/how you could use different parts for future builds, and general idea about postapo style itself. With all that knowledge you see, what can be useful in stuff that normally you'd throw out. I'm currently making a breastplate from leftover steel sheet tiles, that I got when my friend was replacing a roof in his house. It's good to analyse pictures on the internet, how someone made something, what things were used, generally deconstruct it, reverse engineer it. It's also good to look at for example Making Of off Fury Road. They show in greater detail things used there, explain what they used, how they made it. Then you can see what of that is available to you, what can you get that's similar, and then experiment. And most importantly - think like your character would, and be safe scavenging. Oh, and when shopping, it's good to look for things, that you can use now or in the future, rather than having one strict shopping list. Because ya'know, you'll hardly ever find exactly what you're looking for or it would take ages. But just know, that you are actually going to use them, that you have a vision for where you can use it, because, as in the video, getting too much and not using half of it is not a great idea. As for gas masks - some of the old ones, like the russian GP-5, have asbestos in their filters. So even brand new, unused, properly stored, from a military store can be dangerous!
My aunt used to work at a company in which they made SPORT clothes And stuff, whenever they got excess fabric or they got flawed fabric they would give it away to it's workers! My aunt gifted me three rolls of strechy, thin fabric, one grey, one red and the other dark blue, many many maaaany meters of it! I'm going to use them for a proyect like this!
A while back while building a costume for a post apo LARP, a friend of mine grabbed me a car tire. We made a pauldron out of it, and it was surprisingly comfortable. We jammed a couple hooks through it and held it on with a ratchet strap. Then again I'm used to wearing a very heavy leather moto jacket loaded down with spikes and buttons. Also we balanced it out a bit by having the other pauldron, a much lighter one, made of neoprene pads and stenciled with nuclear symbols. Also held on with a ratchet strap.
I absolutely love your videos and you have actually inspired me to create my own outfit. I'm not very creative or even capable but when I get access to a workbench or something I will definitely try
Another good bunch of tips man. Thanks! Always awesome to get an insight into your thoughts and how to do, along with not to do stuff. Currently using these for an orc costume while on the side working out various parts for a post apo. costume for the danish Sunfall. Good day to you!
I'd love to know what the specific vest is that you used as a base. Awesome work and great advice. My favourite source of parts is the "hard rubbish collection" the local council does. I call it the "night market" and I drive around and scavenge things out of the piles on people's front lawn :)
I picked up a bunch of free car tires (found'em lying around) and found out the hard way it's a pain in the posterior to work with. I was going to make a Tire-Armor (yeah, that old thing), but all they ended up doing was sitting in my balcony for two years and collecting wasp nests...
I've watched this video 3 times so far, and I want to thank you, I have actually started making a new plate carrier for photos and videos and airsoft, been saying I was going to make it for near a year and finally I have done it. So thanks for this inspiration.
well it has a grip and a top structure suited for that, yes. good scavnger thinking, mate :) thats exactly the thinking patterns that you need for this stuff
great video I'd like to add I've gotten lots of great pieces scrapping appliances and motorized tools while getting money for the recycleables to fund the rest of the project. Love the videos keep it up brother.
Thank you for this video, all your videos are so helpful and inspiring. You should totally make a snail with those pieces you showed. "Hail the Snail!" 🐌
The bit you showed before the clutch plate is most likely something that fits on a motor for either a siren or a blower, I had something exactly the same when I took my leaf blower apart. And again this video is amazing. Also that thing with the gauge on it could be used in a futuristic mounted machine gun, use an airsoft rifle that can fire full auto if you need it working, add in a tripod and that heavy bit with the gauge, an ammunition box and some hose and a ton of your awesomeness could probably be one way to go, and if you want I can draw the idea out and send it to your Facebook page. Keep up with the awesome videos
actually not a bad idea, thanks :) just dindt think of stationary guns before, because they are effin big. but yes, if working on a LARP or movie set props rather than somethign id carry on myself, it would make total sense :)
Nuclear Snail Studios I tend to have these crazy ideas, I once made a bow from an old fishing umbrella to use with a costume. Glad you like my idea, if you want I can send you a pic of a quick sketch I did of the mounted gun :)
I got the idea of a post apocalyptic impression from a couple of my airsoft club mates. First place I looked for supplies was in my own workshop, all the old stuff that I hoard thinking 'it might come in useful one day' Well, this project is using a pile of it. Stuff like a nearly worn-out tool belt, the safety harness that I had to retire after it reached the end of it 10 year useful life, a sheet of closed cell foam, metal fittings etc. After that, I raided the waste bin at work - cut offs of walkway matting from a TPO roof install, more metal bits and pieces that may be useful. Lastly, my nearest city's dump has a shop that sells useful stuff that they salvage from what people throw away, I paid them a visit when I was in the area doing a job, what a great place for supplies for this hobby...old clothes, discarded household items and parts of, old personal protective equipment, leftover building supplies, paint, bike parts...no need for a big stockpile myself :-)
Number next! Bicycle shops!!!!!!!!! I build bicycles and ride them every day, you are talking chains, sprockets, brake parts, cable housing, braided steel cable, innertubes, brake levers, handlebars, pedals, derailleurs can often be taken apart for cool springs and plates, best of all, every bike shop has a scrap bin full of stretched chains, worn out tyres and sprickets, and punctured innertubes, ask and you shall receive! (the rear cassete cluster of gears on mots modern bikes wear out and are cheap as hell for steel ones, but have 1-3 bolts holding them together, they are all flat!) absolute gold mines!
Heard ya mention good tools. My favourite bad tool was a hole puncher whose arms were so weak that instead of punching a hole in the leather, the arms bend when I applied force...
regarding tires, wheelbarrow Tires are great. There are some of those which acutally look like car-tires but dont have much more metal in them than bike tires. Also cost not alot most of the time =)
I guess I'm lucky I work in a shop making movie props. I already have access to materials and tools that can be used to modify things I come across and even make my own items from scratch.
Just asking nicely is my go to option when I'm not at the fleemarket. People are just happy that someone takes there junk away from them. Also autoshops and other places just throw the sparkplugs in the garbage. Apperantly they have no recycling value.
My post apocalypse costume idea (1) a torn down army vest (2) a light padded torn and ripped hoodie with elbow pads (3) long patched cargo pants, with knee pads (4) a classic torn and worn-out backpack, with botton and keychains, and duct tape
"I Better faster ways to solve the problems at hand." This is very true. Another way to think about it (and get into character while building) is how would I do this in a real apocalypse? How can I solve this the easiest way possible? This works 9/10 times and you only have to make exceptions to this if you are using power tools instead of a real apocalypse where you might not have any.
Wow, the other day I actually wore my 1939 Danish/English M45 gas mask for 2 hours straight, the filter hasn't been used before tho. When I saw the part of you talking about the safety of old gas mask I was shocked. When I looked it up on Google I read it contains asbestos. So now I have to get a more expensive, less cool looking one and I already have a really, really tight budget
I have heard (don't know for sure) that ww2 era gas mask filters have asbestos in them. Don't use old gas mask filter for props use old gas mask and mod them to look cool with hoses wires and stuff as a prob or get a real 3m respirator with new filters and cool goggles for 10-15 € at a hardware store. you can mod/grime them and still have them working right!
if you mean the brown belt, its weightlifter´s belt. most likely you can get it on ebay for 10 bucks. the green ones are german army hip belts. where you can get those - didn´t i just make an entire video with a description full of links to answer exactly this? :D :P
Dammit, and here I just got 2 car tires, for free mind you, and spark plugs. Got an american football shoulder pads, but the thing have been outside for so long I don't know if it's moldy.
Shad Draner just don't breathe in mould spores, that can make you really sick or kill you if it starts growing in your lungs. The best way to clean mould off things is borax powder mixed in white vinegar. That's what I use. The borax will kill the mould on the item and it's roots under the surface. Borax is fairly safe too if you get it on yourself (unlike bleach which only kills surface mould and not the roots)
hello.. just wanted to say that you dont need to spend money pn the tires. . your comment said "Grab em if you get em cheap" .. just go into a bike store. .. they throw the used tires away.
EBAY, GOODWILL! SALVATION ARMY INVASION! I really wanna do a post apo/ steampunk Larp, but the first one my roommate and I are going to is Armistice Arcane in Louisiana.
Google 'MilitaryCollectibles 4U' they have original and replicas from most armies at WW1&2 etc, customised dogtags, patches, belts, medals, pin, helmets, gasmasks, etc.
Hi, i'm french. Someone can write me the first tips please ? It is "flee market" ? "fli market" ? "fee market" ? Awesome video like always. But why not add some subtitles for english noobs like me :P just when you speak about an important thing like here : speak about this kind of market BAM you can read the subject name :) just a little suggestion for share always easily ! :D thank you for all btw, you are awesome !
Hey everyone. I have a resource for you to consider. Now in Europe I don't know how it works out for you because of space being more of a premium than it is for the junkyard capital of planet earth, the United States of America! First Imperial Asylum of the planet of clocks. Yaaay!! Ok so you can go to used car parts store lots. Like here in Florida for instance there's a place called ' Barely Used Auto Parts ' store. Now you go there with a buddy or six bring canvas bags of tools ( make sure you bring a battery powered drill with lots of bits and sockets ,batteries, and a wheelbarrow ). Go out and 'pull' parts out that you want or need. It's a good source of stuff you can use and modify if you're a crafty bugger, ( even if you're not crafty but just a bugger , to each you're own . Yip? ) . Now what kinda goodies can you scarf ? Well you sometimes can get the metal vehicle manufacturer's logo off ( imagine a VW logo on your armor )or sometimes the model logo like from an old Ford Falcon and create a new character called Falcon, Capt. Falcon or Capt. Bugger Falcon ! )Also take a look at headlight and taillight metal frames, rings ( keep the plastic lenses ,no keep ' em, you can spray metal colors on them or like in Mad Max and mount 'em unpainted onto your shoulder pads. There's a lot of stuff here for prop weapons to use too. Don't ask me what 'cause I'm not gonna try an think that hard ' cause I'm not a thinker but a buggerer ok? Also if you're really industrial ( not me of course 'cause buggerer, remember? Yip Yip ) . Now something else to consider. A fiend of mine,( yes I said fiend , ...you don't KNOW him! ) Made fake nails and spikes using liquid polymer clay mold making kit and made molds of some nails and designed some as well as his own spikes . Filled the molds with some latex rubbery stuff ( ah latex rubbery stuff yum! ) Now if you're crafty AND buggery you can get creative here. Auto destruction scrap yards are good too ( now get permission to be there, unless the owner or manager is into crafty buggery or wierd tools or something ,then do that! ) then troll the treasure trove. I hope this helps some of you Crafty Buggers get some cool stuff or attract some fiends , trolls , desert rats or rust crabs ( I believe there's a spray for that, good, but don't tell Me about it ' cause I got my own fiend and I'm not sharing him with any of You! Nop, Nop ' cause he's a true fartist...uh artist!) So try this here cool stuff, get some new and exciting skin infections or infestations, rust crabs, trolls , don't forget the trolls they've got some cool weird hair styles and find yourself a good fiend they're better than gold if they're artists! Ok have fun you crazies. Wacky Woo! Goobie...Goobie , from the First Stug of the 23rd Desert Nod Zone Patrol , " Our War Wags Are Made Of Rust!" "Love Is A Good Antibiotic Cream or Anti STD Oinment"

sorting out the shit you need from the shit you dont is a key skill, work on that :)
Made of Ghosts This hit me so hard on a personal level that I think I'm gonna have to sit in a messy closet for a minute.
Same here 2 Years later 😅🙏
i can relate to this on spiritual level

tfw I talk like I'm a pro, whilst I only made like two and a half costumes xD
but you have very good thinking patterns. My man! wish most of em other folks understoond the things you understand right off the bat :)
I went in my uncle's basement and found old tools and gold silver and brown paint cans from 1987
3:40
You know what's fucked, I live in a navy town here in the US but yet we don't have a single military surplus store here. Ain't that some shit
Thanks to you whenever i go to a thrift store i usually buy out any good belts. Especially the canvas military style ones with built in holes.
I have a flea market, thrift store, my grandma which has ton of stuff, an army surplus store, and a junkyard in a 30 mile radius
Halloween is on Thursday, and I'm working on a quick post-apo costume. This really helps, thanks!
This has helped me quite a lot for making a school project! :D
(The teacher doesn't know I'm making a post Apocalypse film! lol)
Great Video!
You should post it on your channel my dude!
29:06 Where is the link??? And where to buy this? I cant find any
Only thing stopping me from making anything is the only surplus store near me wants 30$+ for a single item
In the US we have second hand stores. They're one of my go to's.
this channel needs more attention, love all the videos, look forward to new content
I picked up a bunch of free car tires (found'em lying around) and found out the hard way it's a pain in the posterior to work with. I was going to make a Tire-Armor (yeah, that old thing), but all they ended up doing was sitting in my balcony for two years and collecting wasp nests...
LOL "collecting wasp nests" :D made my day
Had to spray them about twice per summer to get rid of a nest in the stack.
Finwolven you should have used a round razors
BUILD A SNAIL I SAY !!!
facebook.com/481666775252131/photos/?tab=album&album_id=505802356171906 there u go :)
Answer will be probably, that you can do whatever you want. Just try, experiment and get experiences in the procces :)
exactly.
Nuclear Snail Studios can you make a apocalyptic tent?
i probably can but why would I? :D tons of more intersting items to build (aint really an environment kind of guy, im more into personal gear)
I've watched this video 3 times so far, and I want to thank you, I have actually started making a new plate carrier for photos and videos and airsoft, been saying I was going to make it for near a year and finally I have done it.
So thanks for this inspiration.
Recap shops always have a few small recap leftovers for car tire armor. Its way easier than slicing tires up
I learned the car tyre one the hard way...Actually email Mark Cordory to ask for advice and he said bike tire.
22:45 If it may be of some use, my recommendation would be to cut the foam and interior out of it.
The measuring tape tool (13:52) looks like an easy thing to mod into a prop hand crossbow. Just a thought
well it has a grip and a top structure suited for that, yes. good scavnger thinking, mate :) thats exactly the thinking patterns that you need for this stuff
great video I'd like to add I've gotten lots of great pieces scrapping appliances and motorized tools while getting money for the recycleables to fund the rest of the project. Love the videos keep it up brother.
Thank you for this video, all your videos are so helpful and inspiring. You should totally make a snail with those pieces you showed. "Hail the Snail!" 🐌
@/
if you haven't used it yet, you could use the car spring as the heavy part of a flail as a prop. possibly adding two more if it's not too heavy
One good thing about post-apocalyptic cosplaying is that junk is what you need! It's fairly easy to just walk around and find stuff.
Thanks for sharing these techniques. Most of the coolest stuff from my build was picked up off the road.
Maybe use the base of the office chair to make a base for the machine gun
actually not a bad idea, thanks :) just dindt think of stationary guns before, because they are effin big. but yes, if working on a LARP or movie set props rather than somethign id carry on myself, it would make total sense :)
Nuclear Snail Studios I tend to have these crazy ideas, I once made a bow from an old fishing umbrella to use with a costume.
Glad you like my idea, if you want I can send you a pic of a quick sketch I did of the mounted gun :)
I got the idea of a post apocalyptic impression from a couple of my airsoft club mates. good thinking! let´s expand it to "any kind of shop that throws shit away" :)
Hey, you can use your too heavy parts to make home fourniture. I use heavy rusty pipes to make tables foot and it look prety nice.
I'm late but I have the tool at 17:41 it was my uncle's it's slightly rusted and dirty from sitting in a garage for like 10-20 years
Awsome man keep up the good work, thanks to your gaussrifle tutorial i was able to turn my nerf longstrike in to a gauss rifle!
pics on my facebook page or it didnt happen :P
Nuclear Snail Studios done!
In my town people just throw trash outside at a specific place behind a hill, thats where i get my stuff from!
Also cost not alot most of the time =)
I'm a shameless hoarder... stuff invariably comes in handy the moment I do a junk purge.
I think this is going to be my everyday style. I love it soooo much
I guess I'm lucky I work in a shop making movie props. I already have access to materials and tools that can be used to modify things I come across and even make my own items from scratch.
The clips man... where do I buy the clips for koppeltragegestrell in the US?
you are offical one of the first proffesional sofa skinner
I make pretty nice weapons with post apocalyptic techniques
You should do a vid o all the hazardous mats
Just asking nicely is my go to option when I'm not at the fleemarket.
People are just happy that someone takes there junk away from them.
Also autoshops and other places just throw the sparkplugs in the garbage. Apperantly they have no recycling value.
can you use sports pads as a base? (e.g. hockey pads or american football pads)
That made mad max's shoulder pad
thx u are awsome....going to oldtown poland
Question, What's your opinion on pop-tab chainmail?
My post apocalypse costume idea
(1) a torn down army vest
(2) a light padded torn and ripped hoodie with elbow pads
(3) long patched cargo pants, with knee pads
(4) a classic torn and worn-out backpack, with botton and keychains, and duct tape
lovley the intro is back :) thank you.
youre welcome :))

What happen to the link for the das koppeltragegestell for the us?
There's three local thrift stores that me and my husband frequent the most.
what tools should i use for cutting up old tires?
I have heard (don't know for sure) that ww2 era gas mask filters have asbestos in them. Yes the soviet ones contain asbestos
What sweater is that you are wearing?

Very helpful! Thank you :)
It's hard for me to go to flea market....I got like five friggin' market just in town
you could cut the limbs off of the chair base and use them as tassets
Dammit, and here I just got 2 car tires, for free mind you, and spark plugs.
Got an american football shoulder pads, but the thing have been outside for so long I don't know if it's moldy.
moldy is bad for youm, but you could try sanitizing them with antimold stuff etc :D
Shad Draner just don't breathe in mould spores, that can make you really sick or kill you if it starts growing in your lungs. The best way to clean mould off things is borax powder mixed in white vinegar. That's what I use. The borax will kill the mould on the item and it's roots under the surface. Borax is fairly safe too if you get it on yourself (unlike bleach which only kills surface mould and not the roots)
what about junk yards?
0:21 Oh no
Brother you rock!
I tore up a leather sofa for the leather now I have a bunch of white as heck leather and I don't know what to do. Got any ideas?

miss not,. for they come in regular intervals :)

Nuclear Snail Studios i expect that 😂😂
what kind of keywords can i use to find nice junk or cheap stuff in the internet on ebay or other sites ? :D
the keywords that describe your junk in a most generic way. so think "army jacket used" and not "US army parka m65/F used, year 1970" (i made that up)
..that is unless you want a very specific model of something. but i wont even start getting into that ,theres tons of specific models of everything :D
ok thank you :D
Sadly, War-Mart/Camosurplus, is showing as Permanently Closed.
in summary, whatever u can find, make it count
Your junkyards don't sell their materials?
EBAY, GOODWILL! SALVATION ARMY INVASION! I really wanna do a post apo/ steampunk Larp, but the first one my roommate and I are going to is Armistice Arcane in Louisiana.
Junk yards are always good
If you live on the west cost (Unfortunate Soul) Saint' Vincent' De' Pual' is a great place.

schön wäre es, wenn du das auch alles mal in Deutsch veröffentlichen würdest. Mir fällt es manchmal echt schwer, dir in english zu folgen.
I'm only 14 years old but I still wanna wear wasteland outfits!
Where can you order russian stuff from russia with shipping to germany?

Google 'MilitaryCollectibles 4U' they have original and replicas from most armies at WW1&2 etc, customised dogtags, patches, belts, medals, pin, helmets, gasmasks, etc.
No just take the valve thing completely apart cool pieces

Marché aux puces.
Traduction exacte. 🙃
I would go dumpster diving
I feel kinda special now because I know Hax too... xD
:D
+Nuclear Snail Studios Senpai noticed me *-* xD
