It’s amazing watching how adorable these baby chimes can be. I just wanted a little buddy, till it snapped at him…and he was having none of that. How incredibly cute. It’s astonishing to go from wanting to peel the skin off layer by layer when watching an unbearably obnoxious/glutonous baby macaque…then watching these baby chimps that make you want to snuggle with them. Both monkeys, yet two COMPLETELY different animals.

Look at that baby doll chimp. Just as cut as one could be. It’s correcting the animal from biting. Lol

It is illegal to remove meerkats from Africa under any circumstances. There ARE no permits.

Its a kinkajou, not a meerkat

    • @loupbleu3177

Is it true ? because I've seen real meerkats in a zoo.

    • @glittercatstudios
      @glittercatstudios 8 лет назад +3

No, it's a Meerkat. In another video, she has a Kinkajou with this chimp while she's feeding it, and you can definitely tell the difference. Kinkajous have enormous, almost comical ears, and Meerkats' ears are folded back, almost in half, so they lay up against their heads. Plus, some beed of the M-Kats have stripes, whereas the Kinkajous have solid-coloured bodies.

Carla René Is what he said about removing meerkats from Africa true ? Cause I've seen meerkats in two different zoos in two different countries and none of them was in Africa.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Sometimes, Ann's information is spot on, and others, she posts according to the dictates of her emotions and doesn't want to muddy the waters by letting too many "facts" get in the way.
But, she means well. I _think_.
Forgive me for taking so long to reply, but once I started researching the question and its various aspects, I realised the issue was a lot more complicated than a simple yes or no. Also, please forgive the length. I may bust it up into two different postings.
So, we start with the AZA. The AZA, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, is an American non-profit organisation whose goal is to advance zoos in the areas of conservation, education, science, and recreation. As part of their efforts to keep its members focused on conservation, they give each individual zoo (or aquarium, but it's too much to type that out so we'll just understand that it's also included when I say 'zoo') the choice to participate in something known as the *_SSP (Species Survival Plan)_*. You may have heard of this if you follow certain gorilla organisations on RUclips or Twitter; they're a flagship species, so the SSP is mentioned when discussing them a LOT.
As far as we seem to have come with animal welfare/conservation, there are a staggering number of highly-educated but ignorant people living right here in the US that doesn't know zoos are no longer the death traps and pits of terror that they once were in the 1970s. Yes, I know there will always be exceptions because there will always be some people who still just don't give a damn about animals or that they are sentient with critical thinking skills and emotions, but they are, thankfully, in the minority. And the more we educate people on just how those zoos have changed, then the less of those shitty zoos will remain.
This is one of the *_most_* appealing benefits of being an AZA member, actually. Because they conduct regular inspections, and the zoos must meet regulations concerning housing, vet care, diet, and social interaction. Becoming a member almost always guarantees that your zoo will never be sub-standard again.
The SSP is just what its name suggests: a collective, active plan to ensure the survival of the species in question. They do that through a species studbook. They record every single death and birth, to which parents, at which zoos, then catalogue their DNA and keep it on file. Then, if another zoo finds that they've lost too many to keep breeding (they avoid inbreeding), the SSP will kick into action, locate a completely unrelated replacement stud, and introduce them into that zoo's population. It should be noted that each zoo has the choice to become a member and participate if they choose. So not all zoos will have SSP information listed.
In the case of the Black Rhino recently from Sumatra, the Cincinatti Zoo had been the only ones to successfully breed these elusive creatures in captivity, so when the wild numbers had dwindled down to four (4!!!!!), the SSP worked in conjunction with the ESSP (the European version of the SSP) and came up with a master plan that ended up sending Cin Zoo's last Black Rhino to Sumatra to a sanctuary so he could breed their females and thus boost the population. So another big part of what the SSP does is to provide as much diversity in its DNA as possible for zoos, but IF NEEDED, to provide back-up for the remaining wild populations.
Zoos aren't the horrific place they were in the '70s.
Now, to answer the rest of your question, I had to do some digging into the Fish & Wildlife Service's statutes, since they're the ones who are legally bound to enforce the ESA (Endangered Species Act) at least here in the US, so they're the ones who govern the import of exotic/endangered animals.
"The activities authorized by permits differ depending on whether the species is listed as endangered or threatened. *_An endangered species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. A threatened species is likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future._*
*For endangered species:* "permits may be issued for _scientific research, enhancement of propagation or survival, and taking that is incidental to an otherwise lawful activity_."
*For threatened species:* "permits also may be issued for _zoological, horticultural, or botanical exhibition; educational use; and special purposes consistent with the ESA._"
Then I saw this interesting paragraph beneath the stuff above:
_"A person registered with the FWS may obtain a captive-bred wildlife permit to buy and sell within the United States live, non-native endangered or threatened animals that were captive-born in the United States for enhancement of species propagation, provided the other person in the transaction is registered for the same species. A separate permit is needed to import or export such species. Captive-bred wildlife permits are not issued to keep or breed endangered or threatened animals as pets. Using protected species as pets is not consistent with the purposes of the ESA, which is aimed at conservation of the species and recovery of wild populations."_
So, in answer to your question, no, Ann is incorrect. Zoos still have permits to import "threatened" status animals, and Meerkats right now have a status of "no danger" (I checked last night before bed). I suspected this was the case, but needed to double-check before I posted, since I like backing up my claims with evidence.
If you have any other questions, please, don't hesitate to ask, or if you're not sure you understand something I've posted here, please ask. HTH.
      Cheers.
