    We watch you as we’re eager to add boat life to our van life experiences.
    It’s really good to see the camping element added too as we’ve done a number of wild camps in the Lake District and Snowdonia.
    It’s good to see that you can make it work from the boat as that’s one thing potentially putting us off getting a boat, that the canals don’t tend to be in mountainous areas.
    Keep them coming you two 👌🏼

    As a sometimes backpacker in my younger days, carrying a water filter is a must. All that hiking exertion requires a lot of fluid replacement. It also makes it possible to enjoy a nice cup of coffee or tea when you wake up in the morning after a cold night. I might also suggest a small flask of liquor. There is nothing better after a long day of hiking, arranging your camping site and cooking dinner than a little nip of your favorite spirits.

    • @FloatingOurBoat

      The water filter is on our must have list and Rich has a little flask stached away somewhere so we must find it.

    The great advantage of walking Pennine Way further North above Todmorden is you can see Stoodley Pike (a Napoleonic War Memorial) for miles in the distance so can't get lost

    Great vlog, and it did bring back memories of our walking and backpacking days years ago of doing the the same kinds thing in Norway. And what Fran was saying about signposted walks that lead to nowhere, they end at some beauty spot or lookout, but nowhere in particular!!........................................ Very enjoyable vishon guys, thanks and cheers from down under!!

  • @cheerio3847
    @cheerio3847 Год назад +1

    OMG - the Penine Way is one of my dreams and I am so excited to see some of it, especially the beginning. It seems that every long trail has to climb out of town and go up, up, and up! Sure brought back memories, but the views look so worth the effort and it was lovely scenery all the way up - and most importantly, good water sources on the way up so you don't have to carry so much. Now I'm psyched to watch more of your journeys during this section to see if you do more of the Penine, or link it in on other canal journeys.
    Slope tenting - a bugger isn't it! Have had that happen, it looks fairly level and not too bad, but then you lay down and realize it's just not going to work. I've had to pull down my tent and search for a better spot more than once. I have found that I can live with a slight slope a bit more if I put my feet on the uphill side, but it has to be fairly small slope to prevent ending up crunched into the bottom wall of the tent! Turning everything sideways and putting my pack along my back to stop me from rolling downhill did work once. You guys have such a good attitude that you can laugh about it!
    I don't like commercial camping food and long ago started dehydrating my own. A dehydrator would take up too much space on the boat, but you can do it in an oven. It takes quite a while so would be a job for when you are about to refill the tanks or are in a marina or the cottage or a relatives. It does store for a long time if you keep it away from water and air and relatively cool-ish. Frozen or blanched veg dry wonderfully, keep well and add to anything. Tomato pasta sauce dries into something similar to a fruit leather, rehydrates easily and angel hair pasta cooks fast for good spaghetti. You can also take some 'normal' packaged food and use that, but it is a lot of preservatives and salt. Red beans & rice dries nicely also and rehydrates well & is filling.

    Cous cous is good for camping food because you can pour boiling water over and leave it to soak, cuppa soups add flavour and then throw in some tinned veg. Pre-cook some potatoes for snacking on, boiled eggs too are good. Warm sleeping bag liners help alleviate chills. I've just come back from a week hiking in the Pyrenees (no camping on this occasion). I've had mountain withdrawal symptoms all week, so this video was perfect! Xx

    How cool is that, to have the dogs take the climb with you. So well behaved, to have them running about on their own - yet staying along as you progressed. It always seems that the smaller animals are so quick and graceful when compared to humans, like when they were actually running up Jacob's Ladder. 🐶👍

    You brought back so many funny memories of Jacob's - I remember one very hot Bank Holiday Monday being sent up there to help a young American Lady who was clearly suffering with exhaustion and heat stroke when we arrived we found she was wearing a thick polo neck sweater. Our priority was to get her re hydrated and cool. You will appreciate how little shelter there is up there, when we attempted to relieve her of the sweater we discovered why she had kept it on - she had nothing on underneath - happy days! On many occasions I have been stopped by confused tourists looking for an actual ladder! Thanks guys take care.

    Hi there, Ken here in Canada, originally from Ashton Under Lyne. Well you really brought some memories back for me and tears. You had the tears for doing something you have always wanted to do. I had the tears for the memories of what I used to do as a teenager in the '60's, and cannot do again. Climbed Jacob's Ladder to Kinderscout and beyond on the Pennine way quite a few times. Yes it certainly is beautiful scenery once you get to the top and look around. You will see even more scenery once you get past Stalybridge on the way to Diggle and the Standedge Tunnel. Take care & stay safe. Ken. How about a shout out when you get to Ashton. Cheers.

    Well done you two, and welcome to the world of Wild Camping. Now you have the bug nothing will stop you. Like you I take two dogs Wild Camping on Kinder Scout and Bleaklow, trust me the dogs will get used to it, they will love it. Things you will need on your list for the coming months is a low profile, possibly geodesic tent, warmer but light sleeping bags, and good mattresses. During summer there is hardly any water spots on Kinder Scout because the cloughs dry out, unless you want to filter really peaty water? Water filter....go for the katadyn Beefree because Sawyer filters clog up due to the peaty water. Don't follow tracks unless its the main one because some are sheep tracks, easy way to get lost. Definitely need a compass, electrics can fail and like you said gps and signals are not reliable up there. Walking poles help tremendously, im 61 years old and have been doing this for years but my knees still ache at the end of the day. Also you will feel chilly at the end of the day not just because of the weather but because your body is cooling down and you have been on the move for hours. When you feel safe to do so try the northern edge of Kinder, its very quiet, great views and you can pitch earlier, there is some water sources but can be a bit daunting to get down to if your not used to it so make sure you have water. I have just subbed because I want to see how your Wild Camping travels go. Atb Bill.

    • @FloatingOurBoat
      @FloatingOurBoat  4 года назад

      Thank you for your comment. We know we have a lot to learn and we will gradually improve our equipment if we continue to love the camping. We both had aching knees at the end of the trip, but we hope as we strengthen our muscles it will get easier. Warmer sleeping bags, a compass and a water filter are top of our list. Thanks for watching and subbing.

    Yep, you should definately get a real compass. It and a good old fashioned map are the only things one can trust if visibility goes down to naught and/or electronic aids craps out for some or another reason (which they invariably do, as you'd know). Once, me and my father was way up in the mountains west of Lake Femund in Norway. Thick fog set in, as is so typical in the mountains (this was in early October as well, so it was a bit chilly...), with visibility down to max 5 metres. This was way before smart phones and GPS, but the trusty old map and compass got us safely back to the car. It should be part of the "mandatory" kit for anyone who ventures out in the terrain like this, I think.

    Loved this video... While the wife and I can't narrowboat here in the USA, we travel in a vintage travel trailer at times. America's equivalent to your boats. But our true passion is wild camping and we do that as often as possible. Instead of a tent though, which we do have, we sleep in hammocks hung from trees. Something that was lacking in this video were trees. But we loved watching you two doing your wild camping. A nice change of pace. Keep it up, makes watching the videos nicer.

      Thanks for your comment Bob. We also watch some campervan and trailer vlogs to relax and love the idea. Not sure about hammock camping though. You're braver than us. Hopefully this was the first if many camp outs for us.

    Try the MOD 24 hour ration packs as all you do is put the whole pouch in water and boil it up and simmer, no washing up, minimum of water plus the water you heat the meals up in can be used for a hot drink, some lovely menus including veggie don't weigh too much either!

    Not sure what you may have experimented with or discovered with camping and food since this video but thought I'd share some of the things I like to do. There are all sorts of recipes online for homemade jarred soup mixes you can make and take with you that are much tastier than the store bought stuff, especially if you add at least one fresh veggie to them. Rehydrated mushrooms are pretty good rehydrated and you can stir fry with some fresh veggies or add them to noodles with some bouillon and either fresh veggies or dried. I like having at least fresh onion and garlic with me and they can easily be in a net back and strapped to the outside of the bag and travel quite well. Mixing the dehydrated and dry ingredients with a little bit of fresh veggies is really the secret to making it taste good. Oh and last one...I usually do this more so for site camping but it could work for backpacking...falafal. Powdered falafal mix (some are better than others) are great and I even use them at home. You just add water and need oil and a pan to fry them up. Put on a salad or pita and a little tziki or a tahini dressing. I usually also like onion and tomato (olives are tough for backpacking and not using single use plastic but there are tiny tupperware type containers).

      Brilliant suggestions thank you. We would much prefer to take some fresh food rather that rely on those packets!

      @@FloatingOurBoat On one of the vlogs of foxes afloat, the one where they go play mini golf, they show and mention a Farmers market in a building but they didn't go in. They will be able to tell you place. It was on a canal further North that you plan to visit. Really enjoyed seeing you explain and point out on your map planner where you have been and where you plan to go. I learnt how to ride a motorcycle in my mature yrs, nearly 60. So relate to the sense of freedom and nature that you love about narrow boating. Its a feeling that is very hard to convey in words. So understand the emotion you feel.

    Wow that was impressive! I’ve done a lot of walking in the Lake District but for some reason I’ve never ventured out of Cumbria and into Yorkshire. When I saw all the kit in the boat before you set off I thought you’d never be able to carry it all but you did. I really enjoyed the video and the beautiful photography so I would love to see more of your hill walking adventures. Those views were definitely inspiration for your weaving. Thanks as always for sharing your adventure. I loved it.
