    For those of you who don't know, the horses LOVE pulling and working. Before you claim they do not, please go and work with them. They were bred for this purpose and love it, they love working so much, that many will die if completely retired. They have to be given work to do, and will do it with pride and love.

    The very best horse I ever owned was a Shire & Quarter horse cross! He stood 16 & 1/2 HH, 2,000 pounds & was absolutely the best saddle horse in the world with the long distance endurance like I've never seen before! I can't think of a time when he even breathed hard when I was working him! He could drag literally anything I ever hooked him up to including an extremely reluctant 2,000 pound bull!!
    He just put his head down & dug in, that bull came along instantly!!
    One winter my tandem horse trailer got stuck in the snow being pulled behind my grandfather's pickup truck coming up the mountain dirt driveway to my house. We unhooked it from the truck & brought my horse out & hooked him up to the trailer, without so much as a strained look on his face he pulled that trailer right up the road into the yard!
    I won that bet with my grandfather that day too!!!
    Anytime after that all I had to say to my grandfather was 'I'll bet my horse can pull that out!', my grandfather just quietly agreed with me!!

      🤣👊BEST comment here! I know the honor of enjoying a retired Belgian draft horse. he was tossed around for 2 years after being dumped from the farm he worked on for 25 years. ❤ 🙏 he was left to fall apart like an old junked tractor. He was given all the medical spiritual physical respite he could ever possibly have before his final passing. Love and respect of retired workhorses

But my Grandpa says that the Percherons worked at a much faster pace, and they ate less, so they were actually a better horse to have, especially during the Depression. Those loads of hay are running in the 3-5 ton range, sitting on top of another ton worth of wagon, and the slope on Grand Hill runs between 30 and 40% for the better part of half a mile. I've seen dump trucks struggle up that hill during construction season, but the horses will walk up it almost like they're on flat ground.

    They are all truly beautiful horses my personal favorite is the clydsdale but only because i have ridden one. My father worked horses for ploughing back in the 1940s and the farmer that owned them wiuld remind my dad to rest them often because a sick horse cant work. We the eorld need to loose some tractors and use more horses the goods may be a bit more expensive but we may be able to reduce emissions and some people will benefit from better mental health

    My neighbors have a couple draft horses. .and a bunch of others.. and they board for people, and they have some kind of shows/ events .. the draft horses are amazing.. it is not until you actually get up close and see with your own eyes that you can really grasp just how massive and powerful that they are.. I thought my neighbors were Clydesdales. Because of how big they are.. but they were a different type.. but their backs were about 6 ft and so wide. Huge muscles.. their legs are like tree trunks .. very intimidating just to be near them..beautiful animals

    Per pound I think ponies are stronger.
    At pulling contests, they pull a larger percentage of their weight than the big horses. Of course, they'd have a disadvantage in mud and snow.
    In the full draft divisions, most of the contestants, and all the winners, are American/Canadian bred Belgians.

    • @spooky_snowball
      @spooky_snowball Год назад +6

      thats true, they can pull the most compared to body weight, but i think in the context of the video, they cant pull the most weight in general.

      if the shire wasnt almost extinct they would climb up those ranks. The shire is comparatively rather expensive. If you look at belgian, they have a pronouced wither. More so than shires. Shires have flatter backs almost as high as the wither and it makes a bigger/heavier horse at the same height.
      What is bad for the shire is people breeding the mares at 3yo when they are not done growing. Currently have a massive 4yo still growing. Once grown and fully educated, breeding her with a almost 20hh stallion to see what happens.

      @@SocialShires Shires look great, but they've got their issues. They tend (not an absolute, but a strong tendency) to have rather fragile feet, expecially if working on pavement and/or dry ground. They, and their close cousins, the Clydesdales, were developed for work in swampy areas that keep their feet somewhere between "moist" and "downright soggy". Put 'em to work on dry ground, and even worse on pavement, they tend to develop hoof issues when they dry out and get brittle - You spend almost as much time messing with keeping their feet from disintegrating as you do working them. (This is experience talking).
