If you want to control the burn while using the Kelly Kettle, simply turn the air intake hole away from the direction of the wind. You can adjust it to whatever level you want it to burn by reducing the air intake that way.

As camper/prepper I've been looking at Kelly Kettle many years now, long before they have been more known in US. Haven't gotten one yet. But after seeing your video, I am encouraged that it is multiuseful in ever more practical ways. I was concerned cookingwise it would be either way too hot or not enough heat and not much good cooking time in between. But in seeing this video with the chunk of wood strategically used I feel more hopeful to own one. I own a larger rocket style stove and thinking this same technique can be used for that also, but larger piece of wood. Thank you so much for sharing! I learned so much and maybe I will buy the Kelly Kettle at last!!!
I just got a Kelly Kettle Scout but have been using a Solo Stove Lite or a FireBox Gen 2 titanium stoves when using wood as a fuel. Making a Swedish torch I do it differential. I split the solid piece into 4 pieces. Then turn the cut sections towards the out side with the rounded pieces facing inward. ( Think of a square box and it's 4 outside corners , the sharp section of the 4 pieces are facing each corner of that imaginary box.) This forms a natural ( central ) hole between the 4 pieces to light. What can say , I'm basically lazy and hate to constantly be feeding sticks into the stoves when cooking. With the Solo Stove , Lite or the Gen 2 firebox the wood is even with ( or just below ) the top of the burn chamber. Not sure about the height of the wood for the Kelly Kettle since I just got it and haven't used it.
Brilliant idea! I don't cook on Mine because of that problem, this method is going to Change that! I keep a shot of sticks inside Mine so it's always ready to go, will now carry the little logs as well! Thanks for the tip 👍

Great tip. I find the my hobo stove with the kk fills up with ash/charcoal quickly and chokes the air vent. I'll try this. I keep trying to perfect cooking.👍
Im looking at a scout size for in my car for those spontaneous fishing bits, or car camping or what have you. Very handy tip to be able to do some cooking, not just boiling water.
I was using my kelly kettle one day and the smoke got so bad and a guy from the fire department saw it and drove by to check it out he thought it was cool when a found it it was just a kelly kettle and I'm in bucks County Pennsylvaniaits good to know I'm more prepared the others in my town it seems

A longer burn from the initial fill is not useful. it takes less than 5 mins to boil a full kettle. You can make your hobo stove last as long as you like, once that is done but to what purpose,?
I am going to definitely give the Swedish torch method a go on my Trekker. Thanks for the demo.

It boils real fast, you will be adding alot of water to it as it boils out! Great little unit!

While it is true that you can just keep adding fuel such as twigs and small sticks, this method gives a more even cooking temperature.
