  • This is a tutorial for how to make a swimmable mermaid tail. It goes over the materials you need, how to make a pattern, what stitches to use, and how to make a draw string waist band. The total cost for the tail skin was $15, and the Aquarius monofin is about $25. `

Someone asked: How do you know how much fabric to get?
There are two things you want to look at when figuring out how much fabric to get.
    1) How wide is your fabric? This means the width of fabric from salvage to salvage.
    2) How long do you need your cut or how many yards of fabric you need?
If the fabric is wide enough to go the length of your tail from waist to tip of monofin + at least 6 inches or 12cm (typically 60inch wide) then the yards/meters of fabric needed are the largest circumference measurement (usually hips or monofin)
If the fabric is wide enough to fit your largest circumference measurement (usually hips or monofin)then the yardage you need is the length of your tail from waist to the tip of monofin + at least 6 inches or 12cm
if the fabric is not wide enough to fit your tail length or circumference, then you need 2x length of your tail from waist to tip of monofin + at least 3 inches or 6cm. in length.

This is such a good video, it's super helpful for someone like me and my friends who can't afford to buy one-

I’m glad it is helpful. I remember the first tail I made was made out of the cheapest spandex I could find and it was the best tail ever, because my dreams had come true.

Foil and other holographic spandex doesn't last long in chlorine. It fades out faster than swimwear spandex. Hold the pen in a vertical position when tracing the body, you'll get a pretty good fit when you finally wear your tail. Swimwear fabric is quite stretchy, so you won't need to add any extra allowances other than the seam allowance. Also, the Aquarius tend to wear holes in fin tips. You'd want to make some fin hats for it, add extra layers to the fin tips, or round off the sharp tips with a dremel.

I have had mixed results with foil finish. In Rapid review video I have one of my 6 year old tails with this same foil finish. The fabric on the fluke is still in perfect shape and that is holo foil dots. The ones on the body are almost completely faded. Usually, the foil finish from SpandexWorld holds up as long as you remember to rinse it well after your swim and don’t let it have too much sun exposure. However, if you are looking for a shiny fabric foil holds up better than anything else I have found.
As for the Aquarius poking holes you are right, and I mentioned that in my review of it. I have actually cut and filed the corners of my Aquarius to so I don’t need fin hats, but I should have mentioned that in my tutorial.

What fabric do you recommend Mermaid Jaffa?

I've always used medium to heavy weight swimwear spandex, found in the swimwear section of the shop. I've bought lightweight spandex but that is a wee bit see through so I stick with heavier weight spandex. My first tail, I've made nearly 3yrs ago, is only just recently starting to fade and go saggy. After swimming, I soak the tail and fish suit (my swimsuits have a dorsal fin on the back), in wetsuit wash to neutralize the chlorine and then rinse well and hang dry in shade. I know spandex can be machine washed, but I don't trust that enough to not ruin my handmade stuff!

My first tail was swimwear spandex and I made the horrible mistake of putting it in the wash. It was ruined. Now I am mainly swimming in painted neoprin or neoprene which hold up better.

Poor tail! Do you paint your neoprene tails? I am planning to sew a pair of wetsuit pants to a neoprene fin cover I've nearly finished making.

The Mermaid Seamstress I loved your video, I made a Mermaid tail from performance/ swim wear fabric in a pink simmer in the shin u had from Joann's back in 2015. we tried doing measurements but it didn't come right it was smaller then I am. So I just to lay on 2 half taped up poster board so mom and draw out from my waist to my ankles then I drew the fluke. after I trace it on the fabric and pin it I sewed, I said to my grandma we forgot the fluke had to what i had left in fabric. I had yo piece the fluke together, once I did that I sewed to the tail I tried it on. it was a little loose behind my knees an my feet stuck out of the opening of the fluke. I wanted to add something to the waist when I sewed it made the waist line smaller had to use a seam riper to remove. I'm 5'2 1/2, size 9 show in women's, waist 38 inches can't remember hips, knees, and ankles. measurements r not in centimeters in inches. Plus I never go a chance to sew something to cover the opening on the fluke. I never got to swim in my homemade tail, it was petty I didn't like the fact u can see were i had to piece together the fluke. I would put on sitting on a soft blanket but the stitching were the seam was up the side my body by my wast came out. we used a straight stitch. I was upset the fluke looked bad my toes stuck out, my grandma would let me get a mono fin told me to us swim fins. I'm a strong swimmer and i know how to do the dolphin kick. I been swimming like a mermaid since I was 7 years. I had a dream to be a mermaid since growing up watching little mermaid, 13th year, and H20. When I saw swim-able mermaid tails in 2011, I wanted but had to loose weight being 213 then. by 2015 I lost that to 193 so I knew yes i can make my tail i didn't have a mono fin. Let just say I still want my dream to be a mermaid, I don't if I want to try to make one again. I don't know what went wrong in the making of my mermaid tail back in 2015, But that year i learn to sew on a sewing machine with my grandma's help. In September for my birthday getting a Fin Fun tail, I know people say bad and good things about. I still want my dream to feel like Ariel in the water, she is my favorite Disney. no matter that movie came out the year before I was born.

Making mermaid tails may look easy, but it took me a lot of failures to get where I am today. Every fabric is different. Different stretch, different durability, different width, different everything. Every tail you make will pose it’s own set of problems. Your story is touching to me. It is always frustrating to feel like you put in a lot of effort and failed, but I encourage you to get back on the horse at some point and have the courage to try again. I hope you enjoy your finfun tail and that it makes your dreams come true. I will have more tutorials coming out this summer and I hope one of them will inspire you to try again. Happy Swimming 😙💙

Aww Thank you, I Think it was because I was still learning how to use a sewing machine. So I had a very little inexperience with a sewing machine at that time I made my first mermaid tail. I been thinking off and on to make one again. Since I having about 3 years of experience using a sewing machine. Ariel is my favorite Disney princess. I always loved the way Ariel, and the H2O girls move in the water. turn to said to my mom I want to be a mermaid in the pool, she says back I know Aliesha u will get your dream one day. well on my birthday September 26th I will have my dream come true with a customized Finfun tail designed by me. Finfun.com has a tail creator now and I just printed up my size and i'm in the process of designing my tail. Trying to give a mermaid princess look to it. I don't know id I should put scales on my tail or not, but i don't draw them that good. but I am practicing on paper until I get to wee i like them. my grandma is worried I will drown in my tail, having my legs bind together in the tail. My mom told her she won't drown and she will have a pool noodle to grab on. I told Aliesha she will not use with a lot of people in the pool and not use with out me there, my grandma knows I'm a strong swimmer.

Hi! For a 1st tail, if we already have our measurements (and also a premade tail that fits us and my monofin), would you recommend using that as a pattern? Also, how long does it typically take to make one (as a beginner)?

I've been sewing tails for about two years I think I've been doing it wrong cause I only do a seam at the back and on the two sides and bottom of the monofin attach it together and I'm done like two hours later oops

I also don't measure but somehow I never have leftover fabric and when I do I just make a swimsuit that goes witht he tail

Not wrong at all!!!! I have sewn many tails like that. I am actually planning to make that tutorial very soon lol. I just find it a little easier for beginners to visualize and make a pattern for this style tail. If you make a tail that works you do it right.

I have my measurements marked but I don't know how many yards of fabric I'll need. I'm 5'2 and weight 103 lbs. So my waist is 65, my hip width is 77, my knees are 54 and my ankles are 38.

      I would guess 1-1.5yd or m (probably 1yd or m)
Your measurements look like they are in cm. Am I right?
