Ross made an emotional impact with the Wiz. Many critics and others didn't get the telling of OZ from a black perspective. Dorothy in the stage production wanted to go home, in the movie Dorothy wants to go out into the world, and experience its wonders. Although flawed, the movie version has much to say to Black Americans, be bold, be strong, be proud, and be loving.

YES!!! I’ve always been amazed that none else really ever seemed to notice the similarities, but to us, no doubt of the influence at the beginning of the song.
