Hi all! Make sure to use promo code ULYSSES if you're interested in getting Dehancer. Also, I think I got too excited in my word usage at the later part of the video became a bit harsh. lol Will try to fix that in the next vid. Cheers :)
I come from a music production background and got interested in photography over the last couple months. It's funny to see that people here tend to do the same things to their material: Trying to get away from the digital cleanness and add something analog, warm and organic. Love your channel! And yes, you catched me with the title of your last video 😂
Yessss the film "revival" is so similar to the tape "revival" I think now that the tech is there to have the option of pristine digital cleanliness both in audio and video, we can appreciate the texture and "character" of these analog mediums. I'd say stuff like "Dehancer" is the visual equivalent of all the tape machine plugins that keep popping up.
Same here. I started losing interest producing music after many, many years, and photography is starting to take its place. I've been selling off some of my old synths and samplers to purchase old lenses and digi cams. And yes, it's interesting how even some of the same principles apply -- I feel like the filmic look is the photography equivalent of tape saturation, warm compression, etc.
I never really liked a very clean look to my pictures, but started going a bit wilder with the editing when I started to shoot more with my phone, but this time to hide the limitations of the phone camera. But now I'm in a conflicting moment with my photography, because people seem to like my pictures, and I do too to a certain degree, but can't avoid questioning if I'm not relying too much on editing instead of perfecting my in camera skills.
I often wonder the same thing. I think edits should be viewed as simply enhancing a good photograph which needs more important aspects like composition and lighting to be nailed in camera.
I'm a new subscriber and you inspire me to not only enjoy taking pictures but gaining new knowledge and techniques about photography as a whole. I really enjoy your videos and your authenticity, thank you for putting a lot of effort into your work and for being yourself ☺️
I must say, as a hobby photographer myself, this is a lovely video. The feel and vibe is great, and I am loving what you are doing with those filmesque photos. Thanks for your content!
wait... so the g7x ii doesn't actually take film like photos, but you just edit them to?? because that's exactly what your original video didn't mention. you didn't mention if they were SOOC.
You, my friend, improved your yt videos quiet a bit. I really think that the quality of your videos is among the best photography videos out there. Rally appreciate you and your work. Thanks a lot!
Loving the videos lately man, keep up the great work over here! Definitely picking up Dehancer as someone who has also spent a dumb amount trying to dial in the things I love about film on my digital workflow.
Thank you so much for sharing these editing techniques!!! Loved this video!! And as a long time subscriber, loved seeing the emotion and excitement too 😜 take care man!
Something that occurred to me whilst watching this, do you feel that editing to a more film-like standard is more liberating in a way, since noise is suddenly not the bad guy? Whatever the case, thanks for the video!
Very, very good point. I think many people in candid photography are drawn to it especially, since candid photography is in most cases, innately gritty. (Or using your terms, noisy already)
I AGREE with you. After shooting film for 2 years, ive become a lot more comfortable with how I edit digitally. More subtle edits and I basically love grain now
@@UlyssesAokiPhoto Yeah, shooting in the dark of wintry Scandinavia on an APS-C sensor, I find myself having to come to terms with it a lot, and this helps in working with it, rather than resisting.
Thank you for sharing this! You're one of the very very few photographers on here whose photography I respect as it reflects some of my personal favorite artists and helps me expand my own process. I trust your process more than I trust the geardo-lined videos. Also, bought myself a pair of MoonDrop IEM's because of you! I can never go back to any other type of headphone now, thanks tons. Keep it up, man!
I haven’t used a camera in 10+ years. Got into photography in 2009 with a canon t1i. For some reason your G7x ii video popped up on recommend and it made me wonder why I stopped. I love the style of your videos. You have inspired me to get back to it. I’m awaiting delivery of my G7x iii. I wanted something more discreet than my bulky old camera. I had trouble finding a used G7x ii for a reasonable price so I went with the mark iii. If you see this comment, what are your thoughts on the mark iii for street photography? Thanks for the inspiration. I needed it.
Your videos have such a nostalgic feel to them. It's such a bliss to watch, keep it up! I recently purchased an a6600. Insane image quality and all... and I just realized how much having the right camera can affect your passion for photography and editing. purchasing this new camera only made me appreciate my Canon G7Xii more, because this nostalgic photo feeling seems to be etched in the look of that camera.
Stunning results, Ulysses! It's a pleasure to see Dehancer used in such a beautiful way. Also, everyone is welcome to download our iOS app for film like photo editing 😊
lil bit off topic but i like your clothing style (iirc ive seen you in visvim and homme plisse by issey miyake etc.). i also love your pictures ghehe..
Thanks for the video not a lot of people share these things. Got the dehancer 2.3.0 but unfortunately had some trouble with it running on my device I wish I could've used it it looks really legit!
I actually went and bought a Canon G7xii today after watching your previous video yesterday. Headed to Vietnam next month and never want to carry any of my professional gear with me on trips like that, so this cam should do the trick. I’m already stoked on the results from shooting today. Solid videos man 🤘
Great video Ulysses, nicely paced, with 3 diverse images to show the latitude and versatility of Dehancer software. Love the images with the self-portrait being my favourite edit. Hope you get around to answering some of the comments below soon lol #Londonlovesyou
Before I continue to watch the video: I really really like your personality! And of course the quality of your content! Thank you for creating this awesome content. I wish you the best!
I adore your video style. I was thinking about picking up photography when I came across your videos. I am probably going to pick up the Canon G7X Mark ii that you recommended. Please continue with what you are doing.
amazing work on your portrait mate!! Starting to understand the concept of film style. As you said it's all about imperfection. Thanks for this great viedo.
Great video! This has been a constant struggle for me as well. Have never successfully broken away from the ultra-sharp, clinical and over-saturated look.
Dehancer is pretty nice because it's not over the top (unless you choose to), but I am suprised at how unstable (almost unuseable) it is on windows 10 since it constantly crashes
Hey there! I just wanted to say thanks for putting this up! I really want to make my shots look like film! But I understand we have some things to do as photographers! Haha. I will definitely download dehancer! Thanks so much!
Your channel popped up on my feed like a week ago. I’m so pleased with your approach, your eye for photography and your call demeanour. It feels authentic and reel. I appreciate your work behind this man and you’re inspiring me as a photagrapher too. Thank you, I’m gonna go and check out your Patreon after this clip 🫶 one love
Your workflow was very informative and cool. During this video it looked like you own a Leica film camera… is that correct? I guess the question is if you have a film camera, why shoot digital and then try emulating film?
Thanks for this video, it’s very informative, I highly appreciate your work. Can you tell me please, which profile are you using when you edit your photos from G7X? Are you using Camera matching profile or Adobe?
Wondering if you have tried shooting with the vintage Leica lenses to achieve a more film look. I have a 1970 50mm Summilux and the 35mm steel rim re-issue. Both give a great look with quick fall off and a dreamy type of bokeh.
New sub here. Love your content. I can't afford a camera yet, but I've been using my smart phone to take raw photos and then edit in lightroom, and I absolutely love it. Can't wait to one day get a proper camera.
"Let's dive into Lightroom cause I can't use anything else cause I'm stupid" *Proceeds to use a different program for most of the video" 🤣 Great video! 🙏
15:39 😆 Cool, I've been interested in Dehancer since I first heard of it but I haven't had a chance to check it out yet. I use Capture One and I've been very disappointed with the film emulation solutions I've tried for it.
You earned a subscriber from the previous video, and I loved this one. I noticed you working with the yellows a bit, do you adjust HSL colours in other ways, or do you just tweak specific ones on specific photos and stick with the cameras colours? Really love your work man
Hey man you basically convinced me to get a canon g7x ii.このカメラはすごくいいだと思う, でも can you make more videos on the post processing / settings aspect of it, これは僕の初めてのカメラです
This is so inspiring. Film photography has something, some magic and honestly this video is perfect for explaining that. Thank you! (by the way, the intro was amazing)
I think if you can keep the videos concise, but retain your cinematic and moody style, all enhanced by your sort of "normal guy" personality, you'll keep doing well. Subject is supreme, though. I'm buying my first ever camera in part because of your previous video. I've just purchased a refurbished Canon G7 XII from the Canon website, expedited shipping, for $580. I'm a novelist, but I've always had a bit of a thing for camera work, even though I've never owned a camera. Your video really sparked off a fiery desire to try my hand at creating interesting, intense and compelling photographs. What will a novelist do with these photographs? I've no clue. Maybe I'll just use it as a hobby that has zero pressure, a creative outlet without expectations. Maybe I'll use the pictures as jumping off points for short stories. But anyway, I think your grainy, "filmic" and cool-90's-action-sci-fi-movie style is setting you apart from a lot of other creators. Godspeed.
It's funny how, as an artform, our tools have gotten so good that we feel the need to degrade the output to make it look more authentic. Like we chased reality in imaging so far that we realized we prefer the rendered fantasy world of film.
I've noticed that my photo's are incorrectly displayed in dehancer resulting in a desatured photo, especially the red channel. Does anyone else have this problem?
This makes me wonder, when color photos were introduced, did photographers then try to emulate old grainy pictures from past decades? maybe, until nobody cared and BW pictures are now few and far between. Now with digital I feel younger photographers don't care about emulating film. Anyone under 30 will not appreciate or understand it, film is a nice filter to them and that's it. Sad that we will see it fade away.
Dehancer is way too much expensive and iOS app is so shit and clunky. Doesn't give the worth of the bucks you pay. Of course, it does the job like no other but the packaging is shit.
Prefer your portrait photo in Raw instead of Dehancer one. Sometimes it feels like, we push a lot to show it like the film because we purchased the application:)

how do you grade your videos? for example the shot at 8:38? Any advice? would be great if you could share :)
