Incorrect, you described Human Schistosomiasis, Canine Schistosomiasis is a different parasite. The one involved here is Heterobilharzia american,. It is indigenous to North America, particularly in the southern United States. The parasite's distribution originally centers around freshwater bodies in states like Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, where the snail intermediate hosts thrive in warm, slow-moving or stagnant water bodies.
This happens in relation to garden snails as well. If your dog consumes the snail or eats a piece of grass where the snail crawled and left slime trail same effect. It is fatal for dogs unless diagnosed in time and antibiotic applied. Had dog go thru it years ago, was found early in bloodwork and had to go thru two rounds of antibiotic. Per the vet was the first time had a dog survive.

Or bilharzia - one of the most common diseases in Africa. We used to get severe punishment if our parents found out we had gone wading or swimming in rivers, streams or ponds.
btw, all the comments in this thread are about a completely different parasite that can infect humans, yes its a worm, yes its in snails, no its not from the same area its compl, etely irrelevant to people concerned about this particular story and the spread of an infection for dogs. its not even found in the united states at all but is found around much of the world. bilharzi, Human Schistosomiasis, even swimmers itch. None of those are the same as the infection in the article. Thats what you get for looking here instead of doing research.
I work in conservation and have been finding a lot of these snails in many creeks in Orange County. Hundreds of shells randomly scattered in the mud, especially after the last rain.
here's what i found: How do you treat schistosomiasis in dogs? Treatment is usually with high doses of praziquantel (25 mg/kg PO q8h for 2 days) or prolonged treatment with fenbendazole (40 mg/kg PO SID for 10 days, repeat in 3 weeks)
Yes!!! I found one in my garden the other day and knew it had to have been dropped off by a bird! I had never seen that style shell on a snail that didn't live in water and luckily it was already eaten and hallowed out.
So they say the human body kills this off and it can't live there but it can live in dogs. It probably just stops causing a reaction and still lives in humans.
What about what is in the food? Could there be fish, seafood, some type of contamination via sources unknown? Just saying. There was research done in other places to look at the liver and parasites. It was astounding.
i think thats Schistosomiasis, that also affect human. when i was in my country i was told not to go to fresh water river if i see snail eggs or snails. this parasites lay their eggs in snails eggs. once inside your body they can travel through blood stream.
they looked the same, it's like a sperm looking parasite. i was told that they can travel through blood stream. if it's not threated early it can be fatal. specially when they reach your vital organs and brain.
Lol such bots, it is a completely different parasite in canine schistosomiasis, they live in different places, canine schistosomiasis is in america, human schistosomiasis is not, there ya go, ignore the bots.
Heterobilharzia americana is similar to Schistosoma mansoni, but it doesn't infect people. It can infect a variety of different mammals, including dogs, but the most it can do to a person is cause a rash sometimes known as swimmer's itch. It happens when the cercariae (a skin-penetrating life stage of the parasite) burrows through the skin.
well, it's common sense that letting your dog swim in untreated water is risky. just let your dog play under the hose in summer to get all the perks of water without any risk.
Rainy season in places like Florida, after mowing the yard are the snails climbing the side of the house the same? My dog gets itchy hotspots on legs and rear area and it's not fleas.
Best to take poochie to a veterinarian and have it tested. Don't try to make that determination yourself, you dont have the equipment and possibly the training. For poochies sake.
How did they get there? More than likely they were accidentally released with someone's pet african cichlids (fish) they could no longer care for or no longer wanted. People release their unwanted fish into lakes and river not knowing they are doing more harm than good.
They do the same with snakes.😮 I think most people know that Florida has a big river, 'snake' problem.😳 My mom watched a TV program one night and the people who try to get the snakes out of there actually caught a 'friendly' anaconda!🧐 Yes, they said it was 'nice' because it never offered to do anything bad to the guys who caught it.😅 I don't know what they ended up doing with it though?🤔🙃
I have a pet fish that we’ve had for more than 10 years since someone gave it to us. It’s an Oscar and has grown very big. It actually needs a bigger tank that we won’t be getting because of cost. Have considered on so many occasions releasing it in the lake. No pet stores will take it. Nobody wants it. Only reason it hasn’t been released is because we don’t want it to die. We reason it’s domesticated and probably won’t survive if released. Will probably instantly fall prey once placed in the water. So what should we do with it if we can no longer care for it? Will be moving in 30 days and the tank is not going. So off to the lake we will go on day 30. Also a side note I never knew that the snails were a problem when released 🤔
@@jennafirequinn8479Talk to a local animal charity (maybe they can help or take it in and take care of it), dont release it if you think it might not survive! It’s about luck. My lab did too but then nearly died just from swimming in our well maintained garden pond because of these snails. We got lucky and he survived. But I personally pulled up every bit of that pond that same day.
If your dog is on moxidectin for heartworm, would that have prevented it? Out west, they may not do heartworm prevention year round.
Makes me wonder. I used to swim in Creeks and Rivers around Austin and eastern New Mexico. I never got nothing. Hope that worm won't go into me.
You are lucky!
Excellent that people went to figure this out!
Thanks for the info & keeping our pets safe.
Went to Oregon for the first time last year to see my dad. Saw a sign at a wilderness site with pictures of snails that looked just like this and it had a warning to search the bottom of your boat to make sure you are not bringing any of them with you. I guess it's a big deal. Probably not the same snail, but looks exactly the same. User propanepusher101 said below that the parasite is known as "Heterobilharzia or Heterobilharzia americana; both are the same".
Zebra mussels are a big problem, and boats have to be inspected carefully to prevent contamination.

Schistosomiasis, Tropical disease prevalent in Central and South America too.

The parasite, Heterobilharzia americana, is a flatworm commonly referred to as liver fluke. Symptoms start gradually with a loss of appetite, and eventually include vomiting, diarrhea, profound weight loss, and signs of liver disease. Treatment typically involves use of multiple medications and close monitoring of the dog by a veterinarian. Your welcome.

Swimmers itch. Same thing.
Or bilharzia - one of the most common diseases in Africa. We used to get severe punishment if our parents found out we had gone wading or swimming in rivers, streams or ponds.
You simply explode....... 💥
btw, all the comments in this thread are about a completely different parasite that can infect humans, yes its a worm, yes its in snails, no its not from the same area its compl, etely irrelevant to people concerned about this particular story and the spread of an infection for dogs. its not even found in the united states at all but is found around much of the world. bilharzi, Human Schistosomiasis, even swimmers itch.
The birds are eating them and spreading the illness
Yes!!! I found one in my garden the other day and knew it had to have been dropped off by a bird! I had never seen that style shell on a snail that didn't live in water and luckily it was already eaten and hallowed out.
Parasites from snails is also know for causing "swimmers itch", I wonder if it is the same.
Yes it is the same
Heterobilharzia americana
Yes, the same parasite that causes swimmer’s itch
GROSS!
Bass Lake by Yosemite gives you swimmers itch.
So they say the human body kills this off and it can't live there but it can live in dogs. It probably just stops causing a reaction and still lives in humans.
Great info. Good work
It doesn't sound like the same illness as that linked to petfood. Snails and slugs carry flukes that attach to the liver.
Exactly what it is.
What about what is in the food? Could there be fish, seafood, some type of contamination via sources unknown? Just saying. There was research done in other places to look at the liver and parasites. It was astounding.
Whereas the parasite in the video is a blood fluke not related to liver flukes
i think thats Schistosomiasis, that also affect human. when i was in my country i was told not to go to fresh water river if i see snail eggs or snails. this parasites lay their eggs in snails eggs. once inside your body they can travel through blood stream.
1:27. Think they could be the same? Or maybe relative?
they looked the same, it's like a sperm looking parasite. i was told that they can travel through blood stream. if it's not threated early it can be fatal. specially when they reach your vital organs and brain.
Yes, its the same
Lol such bots, it is a completely different parasite in canine schistosomiasis, they live in different places, canine schistosomiasis is in america, human schistosomiasis is not, there ya go, ignore the bots.
This doctor is a God sent❤
well, it's common sense that letting your dog swim in untreated water is risky. just let your dog play under the hose in summer to get all the perks of water without any risk.
They do the same with snakes.😮 I think most people know that Florida has a big river, 'snake' problem.😳
My mom watched a TV program one night and the people who try to get the snakes out of there actually caught a 'friendly' anaconda!🧐 Yes, they said it was 'nice' because it never offered to do anything bad to the guys who caught it.😅 I don't know what they ended up doing with it though?🤔🙃
Climate change?
They're native less than 500 miles from where they were discovered.
One hot place and another hot place, so no you moronic parrot; not climate change.
Also, ask in local facebook groups etc if anyone has a bigger tank they might want to donate..There are a lot of these FB groups where ppl give things away for free etc Might also be able to find someone who wants him in a local FB group (although be very careful who you give it too, make sure its a good person who will take good care of it!) But now snails have become a Bigger Mystery,,, IS somebody responsible for doing this? I ask myself. I don't have any 'Quickie' method to rid yourself of those parasites. Lyme's disease is a parasite thing too. Simple treatments are still available though, Taking baking powder in water neutralizes whatever environment from waht i know,,,, Like a few tsp in water everyday. It seems so simple. I heard if you take that everyday a virus can't 'go nuts' in ur body. But people should double check it, I think apple cider vinegar works to kill bad things too,, But taking that everyday,,, That's not easy

In the water
You guys ..the name of the parasite is literally on the graphic with the life cycle 1:27. Heterobilharzia americana is the parasite- a flatworm. The snail is the intermediate host, meaning it carries the parasite until it reaches maturity and then spreads it. The most common treatment is a drug called praziquantel- which is used to treat for tapeworms in most canines/felines.
