Straddling the counties of Lincolnshire on the east bank and Nottinghamshire on the west bank. The fast moving tidal river Trent below. The Torksey Viaduct has stood rusting and abandoned since 1959 when the railway line between Retford and Lincoln closed.
Torskey Viaduct was built in the late 1840s. An early example of a tubular box design. Not a standard design back in the day and as a result it was not initially accepted by the authorities as a safe design.
It eventually opened in 1850 by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway. A few major modifications were made in the following years and here it still stands today.
