  • A look around the now abandoned Glen Davis Works in the Capertee Valley, NSW. Located approximately 165km from Sydney between Lithgow and Mudgee.
Oil was extracted from shale between 1940 and 1952, with a township of 2,000 people built around the industry.
The history of the site is fascinating and offers an insight into Australian oil production during the WW2 era. The ruins of the industrial scale buildings are the highlight with the retort building sitting over 3 stories high, nature has slowly started to claim back the site.
Today there are just over 100 residents remaining and the town and works are a reminder of the past.
Tours of the works run every weekend, definitely worth it if you're camping in the Wollemi National Park, Glen Davis or just visiting the area.

The mountains are definitely something else, my understanding is it's part of the bigger Sydney basin and the cliffs were formed by water erosion millions of years ago. The shale is the result of mud and organic material being compressed over time at the bottom the ocean.
