  • I've documented before how our soil is deficient in several key nutrients so we have to add a lot of fertilizer. Many people have asked me "whats the best fertilizer for christmas trees?" or "what do you recommend for fertilizer?" and I routinely have to suggest following the soil test recommendations.

A small, inexpensive cement mixer would be ideal for mixing batches, fill 5 gallon pails, and head to the trees.

thanks for the spreadsheet ideas. I just sent my soil samples out a day ago and I am excited to get my trees right once I get my results

Good explanation of the fundamentals of fertilizer. Like so many other things in any kind of agriculture, fertility is a simple idea made complex because it varies so much by location... by state, by county, by township, by section, by field, by acre, by square foot. Best of luck this coming growing season. Thanks for the video!

Do you find that the fertilizer accelerates the growth of grass and weeds at the base of the trees? I’m curious how much makes it down to the tree roots when spread on the soil. Thanks!

yes it does. I try to control grass and weeds as much as possible to maximize the impact on the trees.

This is great info, Phil. Our property is a former Christmas tree farm and the the trees have gotten pretty huge. Some of them turn brown for no apparent reason and my neighbor said some fertilizer would help. Would this be the same type of fertilizer?

Are your trees randomly dying or just turning yellow and unhealthy looking? If they're turning brown and dying that's probably not just fertility issues, and could be one of a dozen other things. If trees are just yellow and unhealthy looking, its likely either fertility or poor soil drainage. As far as fertilizer goes, you'd have to get a soil test to figure out what your soil needs and use the spreadsheet in the description to make your own custom fertilizer based on the soil test result.

@@WoodsTreeFarm It's more of unhealthy looking. The needles on the middle to bottom part of the tree will turn brown but the tops will stay green. At first I thought it was because of sunlight. The trees that have done this haven't died, though. I think a soil test is a good idea.

definitely sounds more like a pest or disease. Take closer inspection of trunk, bark, branches and needles and look for anything out of the ordinary. Take some photos of what you find and reach out to a horticultural or tree disease expert. Find a university in your state with a big ag or forestry program and find a specialist you can reach out to.
